You got it right, except for one detail: the quality of the tools is not the art, but how effectively you use these tools. that is what makes a good artist. ;)

I agree that the quality of the tools is not the art. I am again refering to your orignal statement that "graphically speaking the wow models are 1000 times better". my point is only that if you are judging "graphical quality" that quality is based on the tools not how they were used and wow uses a lower quality tool.

Again 'art" is the opinion of the way the tools were used regardless what the tools are.

Quality is the superiority of the tool used to produce it.

so 'graphically speaking EQ is better than WOW"

and as you stated - from an "Art' perspective - its up to the viewer.

True - you can objectively examine the items used:

    • Sophistication of the renderer
    • Number of polys
    • Animation capabilities

But as you say, the final outcome of all these can only be evaluated subjectively.

No, nor did he say that.

He said the quality of the tools/materials was the only objective aspect in this. Everything else is subjective.

You brought this up by claiming that WoW was objectively superior in graphics. The only objective portions in this comparison are in EQ2's favor.

Which looks best, is more in-theme, or more immersive is entirely subjective. And this final, subjective product is all that matters.

Exactly - Consider the following pictures of the same apple.

    First - a low poly 2d apple,

Second - a 3d low poly apple model,

3rd - a 3d high poly rendered version (*background is black as rendering option).

While they are all the same object (in fact - the exact same object using 3 different methodologies), the last model is graphically best in the fact that it uses superior technology.

P.S. On a final note the topic of the post is your preference - all technicalities aside image!
