Anytime it comes to computers, WAIT... The longer you wait, the lower the price and the faster/newer products come out. Why upgrade for something that you can't even play?
Memory is the plague of all problems, unless you are one of those people that have to have Max anisotripic filtering and antialiasing enabled.

...neither of which is significantly affected by system memory. Video memory, yes. Not ram.
Ok here is another one for you guys. When games like EQ2 come out do they require more system memory or more graphics card memory? i can not figure out if i want the 128 card or the 256 card.
How do you use the starter set to test? Is there a benchmark on it? I just got it last night, so I really haven't had a chance to look into the 2 discs, other than the character creation disc (disc 2). My PC handled the character creation well, but that most likely is no indication of my PCs ability to effectively run the game. The character creation is pretty nice, but CoH is still the best IMO. I really like the new Erudite models. They look so much better than the big foreheaded EQ1 models.

My bet would be to buy the biggest, baddest card possible if you have 1GB or more of system memory. For those with 768MB or less, buy more RAM first, then get the big card. Also, make sure you are running the card at it's potential - if you run an 8x agp card in a 4x slot, you are not realizing the potential of that card.
Also consider that while the 256MB card is incrementally more expensive, the 128mb card will become obsolete much sooner.

Well, look at it this way. If it has to do with graphics it will be handled through the memory in the Video card and if you don't have enough it will use the system memory which is usually slower than getting it directly from the video card. In other words if it has to use system memory to handle graphics as well then you have less memory to handle all the other stuff that is non-graphic related. I could go in more detail with this but it would be a long process. So, in the end yes get that bad puppy 256MB vid card and get atleast 1024 MB system ram. Then you should be kickin' it with a smile. However if you have to choose one and not the other and you have atleast a 128mb vid card I would go with the system ram since the 128mb vid card is adequate and the system memory is a lot cheaper and no matter what never a waste of money.
As for the one guy saying PCI is from early 1990's. Sorry PSI was not really in any machine until the top end 486 and prior to that ISA was GOD from about 1995 and earlier, before that was worse and when cards on a daughter card and strecthed from one side of your case to the other side. Talk about data cable and wiring nightmares. Man, I can remember back when the BIOS was loaded from a 5 1/4 floppy just got get the system to boot. If you lost the floppy disk you were up the creek without a paddle.
However for the originator of the topic here. I would go for the ram, it is cheaper and more than likely make a significant difference. Well atleast good enough to enjoy EQ2. However if you feel you want certain things turned up more then you can save up for the big dog video card and still enjoy EQ2 until you get it. Other than that for nore you should be ok.
As for a few that complain about the requirements being out of league with what is currently out. Well, I think you really need to look again. By the time EQ2 comes out and if you get your system up to see the level of detail EQ2 will present to you, then I say you will then be ready for all the others that will be demanding the same or more. Like Middle Earth Online, STALKER, MoHPA, Brothers in Arms, Dungeon Lords, Half-Life 2, Doom3 (already out), Dungeons & Dragons Online, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and many other titles that will be coming out in the near future as early as this Christmas. However if we were to fall back and support older systems it would require more work for lower quality textures and not just a slider bar or checkmark box to turn these things off. Doing them things when you lower that slider has to load something other than what is there....more work. So, some of you will have to upgrade your systems (that is what christmas is for ) or continue playing the older games out there and not enjoy the newer technolgy of gaming in the industry. If the devs always listened to the ones that didn't want to upgrade, not only would the computer technology would be behind itself, but we all would be still playing games with the quality of Wolfenstein 3D or maybe they would have somehow squeezed Quake in with an option for VERY LOW DETAIL settings. I rest my case.
As for Djin. Hey why do you even bother posting on EQ2 when you don't even like EQ2? Didn't we already deal with you a while back about how your opinion of EQ2 sucked and WoW rulez??? So, what's the deal now? If you don't like EQ2 why are you here? Are you inlove with the EQ2 fans? why you want our attention so much if you aren't getting to know us to see us in game in EQ2? Ah, I think I know what is up!!! You are a EQ2 Troll!!! Anyone beg to differ? OK guys, join with me in my fellowship and lets hunt this troll down, Mohahaha...

go with the ram 100%
512 is the bare minimum, and 9600 is a pretty good card.

Hey! Your breaking the NDA of EQ2 by releasing screenshots of.... *Looks closer* oh, false alarm.
EverQuest II will rock.

Super tough question. Super tough answer.
You don't have enough Ram thats for sure. Ram is a bottle neck.
Your Video card is seriously outdated. The difference between a 9600 and 9800 are staggering.
Moving up in video cards means a new power supply I bet.
Buying more RAM, I guess the RAM you have sucks already.
Hum...
Get a new... Video Card, and Ram..
