I prefer games that are done well.  PvE is more often done well than PvP, so I mostly play PvE.

  • LoiraLoira Member Posts: 89

    Where is the both choice?

I prefer a game to have both, but I expect both to be well done and meanignful.

  • cukimungacukimunga Member UncommonPosts: 2,258

Well I like both,   I like mostly PvE games with Open World PvP.   That is the best combo IMO, you got a solid PvE game but you still need to watch your back when your in the huge PvP areas later on in the game.

Didnt' vote because there was no both option.

  • objeffobjeff Member UncommonPosts: 97

PvE and PvP are two different things.... where is the agrument? :)

However, I help settle the big question of what I like!

    PvE

PvP is fun - but I'll play an FPS if I want to challenge people.

  • declaredemerdeclaredemer Member Posts: 2,698

    Oh, my! Overwhelming PvE.

I almost dislike PvP, especially when it has nothing to do with the lore, world, or character development.

PvP is almost frustrating at times rather than immersive.  It could be done so much better in MMORPGs.

  • junzo316junzo316 Member UncommonPosts: 1,712

I'm definitely more PvE oriented.  I enjoy a story and being a part of it.  I realize, however, that PvP can play a part of this.  PvP can add to the immersion of certain games.

    PvE focus with instanced PvP.

    PvE for sure.

Co-Operative play is very fun, also more relaxing and enjoyable for a late night game.

pvp also breeds a very pissy section of the community. If its PvP focused, you're bound to run into a lot more assholes there than a PvE game.

  • ShohadakuShohadaku Member Posts: 581

I prefer a game with both in a solid persistant world

  • ChiramChiram Member UncommonPosts: 643

PVE generally seems to be more relaxing, something good when you get home from work and can barely move as it is :). The pvp in my opinion has to be much less gear dependant(wow) and more skill dependant ( like Planetside ).

PVE because I like the stories and lore of the games. I enjoy the co-op play and bashing mobs to find that special piece of armor for my characters.

PvP makes the game more competive and strives you to get better. ialso like the feeling of competing against other players. but whatever i prefer pvp makes the game more intresting to me and more entertaining pve is too repetitive and the only reason i would pve is to level/gear up :D

  • BoneserinoBoneserino Member UncommonPosts: 1,768

30 people and the votes are 3:1 in favor of PvE.

It doesn't settle the argument because there is no argument.  But it does explain why you see very few PvP games on the market.

    1) they are hard to implement well.

    2) You are losing 75 % of the market if you go solely PVP

Yes I know its a small poll.  But I bet that at best it might be 2:1 in favor of PvE.  But if they could correct the implementation part then more people might enjoy it and change their minds.  But I don't see that happening.

If I seriously have the urge to play head to head, I turn off my mmorpg, turn on a half-life mod of whatever sort I'm in the mood for, and go for it.

I've played pvp games, way back when, where player on player death was technically possible, but rarely ever happened, and only in the context of the ongoing story.  I guess these days that would be termed a heavy roleplay game, but it was what it was.

Recently, I have come to realize that although I tend to steer towards the pvp servers in games, I almost invariably prefer the pve experience. Too many games require you to focus choices made in "feats" or equipment towards pve or pvp (like killing an npc human somehow requires different equipment than a player human) or have "choices" where one path is so much more effective in pvp fighting that it really is no choice at all... which force you to either follow the strict guidelines to be viable at pvp, thereby eliminating freedom and choice from the whole gaming/leveling experience, or be a permanent victim.  I play rpgs to be a fun self-created character, as much as possible, and having 4 out of 5 choices eliminated by pvp needs is irritating to me.

Also, the culture of the current pvp servers in most games is horrid. Imagine if we were all amateur tennis players.. in a league without any authority: no judges, no one watching, just some players, a court, and a ball. If the MMO crowd were involved, it wouldn't take long before no shot was "out", extra players on your side is perfectly fine, and smashing the other guy over the head with a racket is a perfectly acceptable strategy if he's ahead. Oh, and in this imaginary death-tennis league of mine: you get nothing for winning.

On the other hand, from the games where you do get something for winning... I hear it's even less tolerable.

To be honest, I have my main characters in Age of Conan on a pvp server, but I stopped seeking out pvp long ago, and avoid it where possible. At best, for me, pvp is a way to add more uncertainty to an environment, because players tend not to have defined patrol routes they stick to... at worst, it's a horrid game-destroying mess of antisocial lashing out and psychopathic behavior.

    PvP.

PvE is so damn boring, I start getting sleepy halfway through a dungeon.  MMO AI is just not good enough for me to really enjoy the PVE content.  Also, I rarely get into the lore of the game through playing.  If I can I will find out more about the world through other sources.

I really don't like the way quests are presented in all the games I've played.  I'm sorry, but I don't want to spend most of my time clicking on NPCs and reading all of their quests.  I would definitely prefer good voice acting, but if it must be text I would rather have it short and to the point.  I do want to know the lore, but 99% of the time I won't read a quest because I rather spend that time gaining exp. I also find it very impersonal.  I feel like I'm just standing next to this guy.  It's more like checking email than talking to a character in a story.  I don't ever get the feeling that I'm part of this adventure like I do in single player games.  I liked how FFXI put together cut scenes from in-game graphics.  Aion is following in it's footsteps, and it definitely adds flavor to the questing, but it's still not enough to really enjoy it.

Aside from the presentation, the actual quests suck ass.  I have no doubt most people would agree.  There is no avoiding killing, delivery, or escort quests.  What else can you really do?  If the AI was better these quests could be fun.

Another thing that annoys me are fields of bears, or dragons, etc.  When was the last time you saw a field of bears?  I feel as if running into vicious mobs should be a little more realistic.  You should be panicing if you happen to stumble across a bear, or a pack of wolves (yes a pack, not 100s of them spread in a  field), or definitely a dragon.  I also feel that the current agro range is retarded.  If the mob is supposed to attack on site, and I can see it, it should come after me.  There is no sense of fear in these games (FFXI was pretty good at this because you needed a group).  You're fighting in a FIELD of bears, surrounded, and they all can't see you.

Sorry for this long ass response, but I'm getting tired of the same old shit.  Sure, newer MMOs have a feature or 2 that's better than older ones, but they're pretty much the same game.  Nothing has changed in years.  The only thing I enjoy about these games is the PvP and playing with my friends.  I know the PVE could be much more, but developers are not willing to take risks.

    I second bleyzwun's post.

The day PVE MMORPG's become as riveting/challenging as single player RPGs could be the day i change my mind.

If people did WOW quests and the main campaign in Mass Effect or Fallout 3 side by side, I couldn't possibly wrap my mind around someone preferring WOW's gameplay.

  • PVE centric for sure with PVP setting

Ths beeing a PvE forum makes it hard to settle the arguments : )

But i dont care, as long there is purpose the the gameplay. I wont do a battleground PvP or kill ten wolf PvE.

I agree with the posts about quality. I play games that have well crafted worlds with a high immersion factor. I voted PvE, only because I have found a deeper playing experience in your average PvE game than PvP. I have to imagine that PvP games take much longer to balance, which takes away from time that could be otherwise spent enriching the world and its features.

I still want a game where I can go to a tavern and buy some ale, roll some dice, throw some darts, and gamble on cards -- all while I'm waiting for my group to gather and slay a dragon or a horde of other players.

I disagree, it doesn't make the game more competitive - it makes the younger players more aggressive.  It doesn't make you better, it makes you more paranoid.  I consider PvP pointless and not enjoyable.  This is my opinion.  Just wanted you to know for every side you see - there is another side someone else sees. To me PvP is boring and yes I have played it -  have, in the past, never again. (the sole exception is EVE, where it adds spice and is actually part of the game not something added in for the younger players)

Look how sad that poll is.

Personally I wished you put in a mixture of both because I can't think of one MMO that doesnt have both in some way.

I have a hard time believe people would rahter stack quests and run raid schedules over good old FvF, GvG territorial pvp.

We've fallen so far from the days of UO.

a well driven-meaningful-balanced PvP, for sure

PvE is for twats, there is nothing that can be considered challenging. nowadays PvE mean big mobs with a truckload of hp, defence, and dmg...but pathetically scripted, 3 fixed patterns that even a blind down syndrome can figure after 3 runs...

want more challenge? two instead of one

more challenge? three instead of two

MORE challenge? the same three. with more hp,defence and attack.

sickening.vomitive.pathetic. and on top of that, boring

that hardly compares with the beauty of human competition. foes that develop strategies, learn from mistakes, and you cant simply one-two-three combo at X range which guarantees you wont get aggro etc etc etc

I like a game that offers a decent experience in both, say for instance, like DAOC did back in the day.

I enjoyed the PVE in there (yes, I really did until TOA) and I enjoyed doing it in between RVR and other PVP activities.

I play EVE right now, and enjoy the PVE and PVP sides, (hard to believe, I know) and even in Runes of Magic, the PVE is decent, (too many quests to my liking)

But you are arguing from the standpoint that people play these games for the challenge. I think PvE is more about storyline and exploring.

As for me I like both. But I like to choose how I play given any gaming session. If I want to pvp then I pvp, if I want to relax, pour myself a good wine or beer or coffee and just explore then I do that.
