Darkfall's looting system is designed to create strife. If one does not pick up a desired item fast enough then the only other option is to hit the other player over the head and and take his crap + the items he ninja looted. If you are skilled and have quick hand/eye coordination you will win the looting game, if not then kill the other person It is uncomprehensible to me how PVE players cannot understand this, even though it is so mind numbingly simple....everything in DF was made for player stryfe as an option, or encourages it.
There seems to be a general consensus that looting macros are used by a majority of the player base. Based on that observation, it seems PvP players cannot understand the goal of the looting system mechanics either. While a "Loot All" button is likely not the best answer, isn't the macro just an unofficial "Loot All" method?
And, to stick somewhat on topic, the review was pretty harsh. Personally, even if I thought a game was horrible, I would have a hard time giving a 2/10 to anything. Maybe the review will spur some critical thought over at AV. Or, maybe they will put their fingers in their ears and ignore. Either way, it's their game and it will live and die as they see fit. It's too bad though. It seems so many people started out very excited, or at least optimistic, for this game.

Althou I definatly not a fan of what Aventurine has created, I think the writer of this rewiew has misunderstood some of the concepts of Darkfall..He get's a few things right and others not so right..I must say that I do not believe he understands what Darkfall tries to accomplish at it's core(but failed to do IMHO)
I kind of disagree here. First, what AV tried to accomplish is cater to a very old and niche market by copying very old and outdated game mechanics from UO and AO and Shadowbane it looks like.
If you actually read all their features and what they planned to accomplish over the last few years (recently the site was updated and removed most of what they promised), you'd see that at the CORE they hoped to accomplish was UO2.0. They promised 500 skills, 500 spells, taming, npcs fighting with you, amazing trading system, never seen before AI and PvE experience, and so on.
It's really only the fans that said "Hardcore PvP full loot game!" and nothing else matters! AV certainly never said that back in the day or up until after release even. Even the stuff they did promise that they did is half-assed. Like skill based leveling? Nope, they made it 4 levels instead because it was the lazy way out. Crafting was supposed to be amazing and you could create all sorts of weapons and stuff from combining different things, instead it's a huge grind.
And then they boasted when you swing your sword or use magic you gain skills. Instead, people just spar and shoot missiles into the sky to gain their skills, macroing everything they do. And then they just said ehhh, we'll allow it. Then since they used their own game engine, they made the mistake to make everything client side. Makes for smooth larger battles but also makes for people flying through the air and teleporting instantly to anywhere.

A crap review, he can't even get some of the facts right, "random swings" ? wtf is that guy been playing cos it ain't darkfall. that review is more like the QQ troll posts you get around here.

There's tremendous hypocrasy within the DF community. Some vocal players defend the clunky UI, skill system and loot system as being hardcore and attack anybody who questions the game's design, but so many players use macros to simplify actions, loot mobs and skill up that they render the hardcore arguments moot. They can't have it both ways.
I'm currently playing Darkfall. The UI sucks. Just because one can get used to it doesn't make it acceptable. I understand the logic behind the current loot system, but it's irrelevant if everybody bypasses it with macros. The skill system is a joke. The game has been designed in such a way that macroers will always have the highest skills in the shortest amount of time. How is that hardcore? On top of that, the skill leveling system is relatively meaningless until you reach milestones (level 25 in a skill, for example). You don't see incremental improvements as you slowly skill up, which essentially means there are only 4 true skill levels, not 100.
There are definitely fun aspects to DF, like actual fighting and exploring, but there are far more problems and those will eventually overshadow the more fun aspects for most players, thereby limiting the game's long term playabilty. Keen from keenandgraev.com is a perfect example of this. He loved the game and was willing to forgive it's warts during the honeymoon period, but eventually the honeymoon was over.
At minimum, Aventuring needs to rethink their overall design so that actual game play is emphasized over macroing. If they're able to accomplish that, then they need to prohibit non-chat/emote macroing 100%. Good design trumps laziness.
See this is where DF truly failed. DF is not UO 2.0..it doesn't have nearly the intricate mechanics, features. or playability of UO. For the record though, this article is not an "unbiased" review or he wouldn't be calling the people who play the game idiots. You might feel that way, however there is a segment of the MMO population that has found something they like in this game and more power to them. Now if only you could do the same thing....
A good review. But i have a hard time understanding someone saying "I could not hit anything, so its a bad system". Or complaining about the loot system, as if a "loot all" button is innovative.

An interface doesn't have to be "innovative" to be good. But it does have to be intuitive. There are entire courses taught on intuitive interface design.
By many accounts, including those by fans themselves, DF's interface is far from intuitive or well thought out.
And, no.. that's not "hardcore". It's poor design.
But how would you compete about the loot if you just puched the "loot all" button? The one that klick just the right get it? Or is it divided like one object/looter?
They would compete exactly the way darkfallers are now competing. With cheating macros that allow players to "auto" loot everything on a corpse. We've heard about this time and time again. Surely you know about it also?
Althou I definatly not a fan of what Aventurine has created, I think the writer of this rewiew has misunderstood some of the concepts of Darkfall..He get's a few things right and others not so right..I must say that I do not believe he understands what Darkfall tries to accomplish at it's core(but failed to do IMHO)

I say we have about 40% of the promsised features.
But if we can have this fun with 40%, i cant wait for the other 60%. It feels about the same as when SWG launched. Think of all the things that will be added : )
I say we have about 40% of the promsised features. But if we can have this fun with 40%, i cant wait for the other 60%. It feels about the same as when SWG launched. Think of all the things that will be added : )
That's why I hang around, I can wait for that 60%. However, I won't pay them a monthly fee plus $55 to add that 60% that UO had at launch. Right now the game is a stripped down Shadowbane, which is embarrassing because that game was stripped down enough as it was. Believe it or not I didn't love UO because of full loot or PvP, I loved it because I had the freedom to do what I wanted. Though the PvP was really fun and looting people was neat. I remember the first time I walked up to a player and stole his vanquishing broadsword from his bag and ran off undetected. (He was afk outside town so don't be too impressed that I was undetected ). Taking things from players can be fun, but when it is the stole purpose of the game to kill people and steal their loot, I'll play Counter-strike: Source or TF2.
Funny how most of the people sprouting good review hav'nt even played Darkfall yet. Reading reviews like this makes me glad I have a mind of my own. oh and just a couple of points,,
The Graphics although not fantasic are world away from EQ1. You can change your weapon instantly by adding them to your Hotbar. You dont have to wait around a minute to die , you just hit the space bar. The Skill with Archery is spot on and realistic. It not for people who want everything handed to em on a plate Obviously the reviewer is used to instant gratifaction like you find in games like WOW
And thats just a couple of points wrong with the review. I have played and am playing alot of Mmo's and Darkfall is one of the most immersive fun experiences I have had. So go stick your hands in the fire .... and why ? Because Eurogamer told you too. Pity the poor sheep.
Every video of darkfall ever recorded calls you a lair.
MMORPG.com has yet to DO a review of this game, they have all been hiding behind "Opinion pieces". Eurogamer, and other sites have done REVIEWS.
Watching Video's and actually playing the game are totally different things ..... and I resent being called a Liar if you would like to try and keep it civil please ..

Darkfall's looting system is designed to create strife. If one does not pick up a desired item fast enough then the only other option is to hit the other player over the head and and take his crap + the items he ninja looted. If you are skilled and have quick hand/eye coordination you will win the looting game, if not then kill the other person
It is uncomprehensible to me how PVE players cannot understand this, even though it is so mind numbingly simple....everything in DF was made for player stryfe as an option, or encourages it.
WHY CUZ ITS A PVP GAME LOLOLOLOLOOL
next time lets not have WoW fanboys shitting around agon trying desperately not to get whacked in the first hour of playing to write a detailed review of their own carebearness.

Thank you, come again.
And what of those who otherwise enjoy the harshness of the PvP system who describe the looting system as annoying as well?
I guess they're just stupid WoW kiddies too?

The rules of Debate are really simple; once you have to stoop to insults instead of facts, logic, or reason to try and win your argument, you've lost.

Need anything more be said about civility? The point has been proven over and over.
Each time something comes out that gives credit to the "trolls" of DF.
The DF fans will come in and start a huge argument which will eventually lead to a thread lock and deletion.
This thread is already heading down that road.
Guys please stop giving the df fans fuel to burn down the only bastions of light we have to show people how horrible this game truly is.
This thread needs to make it at least a day or 2.
Just let them come, ignore what they say, it is pretty simple to do really, you just ignore the urge to hit that little "quote" button.
If you do that this thread will endure and others will be made, and eventually the df fans will slowly fade away because everyone is ignoring the quote button, and maybe df will fade off the radar and out of existance.
-or- AV couldn't think of any decent looting system, decided to copy UO's ten+ year old one out of sheer laziness/incompetence/whatever and then sells it as "a looting system designed to create strife"
There's a reason the majority of DF's population is hackers / macroers that use autoloot.
True... I'd forgotten that.
Sorta undermines the whole "creating strife" thing.
Nope... doesn't create strife. It leads to hacks created to circumvent it.
I've known of many hacks created to alleviate what players consider flaws in the design; this seems to be one of them. I remember another one made for EQ2 early on that automated mouse-clicks for crafting.. ironically called "carpal-tunnel" if I remember right.

I dont follow Darkfall but i thought others would find it Interesting.
This is so obviously an EQ-clone player's review.
Quests? Storyline? Gimme a f*cking break.
Combat is fun. If you deny that, then you hate FPS combat. Simple as that.
Darkfall can easily be criticized for alot of things, but combat is *not* one of them.
He is generally way, way over the top in his flamings. He comes across as someone enjoying criticizing and he just smears more and more on, until it all topples and comes crashing down.

Well as i said, tries to accomplish !!!
And some of those features are certainly not outdated just because they were surpressed once from players who doesn't like some bigger danger elements in their game..
Also if this is the case there are several "outdated game mechanics" in several newer games aswell, like the very old level class system for instance.
For what it's worth Aventurine atleast deserves something for beiing brave enough to atleast try to be diffrent !!

We all know what AV TRIED to accomplish and they failed at every single turn.

Watching Video's and actually playing the game are totally different things ..... and I resent being called a Liar if you would like to try and keep it civil please ..

To quote Simon Cowell from last week, complaining about people in here not being civil is like complaining about a cow mooing.

You started it!!! Will you stop touching me?!?!?!?! Daddy, the people in the forums are touching me!!!
Innovative? No.
Intuitive? Yes.
An interface doesn't have to be "innovative" to be good. But it does have to be intuitive. There are entire courses taught on intuitive interface design.

1/10 for Eurogamer
Thank you, come again.
And what of those who otherwise enjoy the harshness of the PvP system who describe the looting system as annoying as well?
I guess they're just stupid WoW kiddies too?

Your reading comprehension is really poor. He simply made a statement that if you want people to be civil that you shouldn't call everyone that disagrees with you a "sheep". How you turned that into your analogy about kids arguing is beyond me...

I guess the general consensus is that fun games are for WoW carebears, Confirm/Deny?
The rules of Debate are really simple; once you have to stoop to insults instead of facts, logic, or reason to try and win your argument, you've lost.

Need anything more be said about civility? The point has been proven over and over.
It has already begun.
Would be nice....
One could dream I guess....

This review I cannot take seriously.
