A good review. But i have a hard time understanding someone saying "I could not hit anything, so its a bad system". Or complaining about the loot system, as if a "loot all" button is innovative.
Innovative or not, having a loot system where you either loot all or atleast have the loot divided somehow in squares is basic UI controls these days and Darkfall not having it shows how "old" the game is.
UO had a system like this and it was released, what 10 years ago?
Yes, UO had it, and to this date it is the superior system. By far.
So...Is the topic of looting the sword that everyone is choosing to die on here? It seems most of the comments now revolve around whether drag and drop looting is great or sucks. The problem is, by the statements of fans and detractors alike, this argument has already been settled . The playerbase has voted with their actions and the choices of many to use autoloot macros. The lack of bans/warnings for using said macros can be taken as an implicit approval of such action.
Sure, there will be some people who play the game as it was coded and not use macros, but all indications are that those people are the (vocal) minority.
So, if we can say that the looting experience was unpleasent for the reviewer using the intended mechanics, what else in the review is there to discuss? There were plenty of other debatable topics as far as I saw and these are going largely undiscussed it seems.

Darkfall's looting system is designed to create strife. If one does not pick up a desired item fast enough then the only other option is to hit the other player over the head and and take his crap + the items he ninja looted. If you are skilled and have quick hand/eye coordination you will win the looting game, if not then kill the other person It is uncomprehensible to me how PVE players cannot understand this, even though it is so mind numbingly simple....everything in DF was made for player stryfe as an option, or encourages it.
There seems to be a general consensus that looting macros are used by a majority of the player base. Based on that observation, it seems PvP players cannot understand the goal of the looting system mechanics either. While a "Loot All" button is likely not the best answer, isn't the macro just an unofficial "Loot All" method?
And, to stick somewhat on topic, the review was pretty harsh. Personally, even if I thought a game was horrible, I would have a hard time giving a 2/10 to anything. Maybe the review will spur some critical thought over at AV. Or, maybe they will put their fingers in their ears and ignore. Either way, it's their game and it will live and die as they see fit. It's too bad though. It seems so many people started out very excited, or at least optimistic, for this game.
I have done plenty of loot-wars, and in the beginning I thought ppl were loot-macroing as well. But it turned out, that you could disable something in the video-options to make your gravestone appear faster. They fixed that, and since then I have had no problem winning loot-wars.
I have only once seen what I suspected to be a loot-macro.
They are DEFINITELY not widespread. And with the recent wave of bannings of cheaters (200+ was banned, maybe 5% of the population), I predict that ppl will not find it worth it.
It isn't that often you really need to get into a loot-war anyway. If people begin looting your stuff, it is easy to harrass them so bad, that they can't stay around and have meaningful progress.
That has the result, that most ppl respect each other, because they have to.
Once you move out of the newb areas, lootwarring becomes a non-factor completely.

And from reading some of the previous posts in this thread I doubt that the "reviewer" (who has only reviewed 2 games for eurogamer, the other being LotR) even played Darkfall.

You mean by someone who's played it for more than an hour or two? OMGWTF, you must be a lunatic! The DF fanbois are getting crazier every day!
MMORPG claims that they are going to do a more in-depth review in time, but there are those (e.g. Mrbloodworth) who would rather they post a review based on an hour or two of playing and not let them take their time before posting something to which they officially refer as a review. If MMORPG allows its correspondents to post anything about their opinions in the meantime to keep people satisfied and let them know that the site's not sitting on its arse, and the opinions are positive, then the threads get hijacked with flames about being biased.
That being said, I haven't seen many official reviews from MMORPG, so I don't know whether what they ultimately produce will be what you're looking for.

There are so many things wrong with this that there isn't enough time left in my workday here to get into it all. I have seen better and more objective reviews done by bloggers here and on other sites, as well as forum posters here. Just a few examples on where this guy is completely clueless.
1) He has a picture with a caption crying about how it takes 60 seconds of bleeding out before he can release. Almost every new player in the game knows all you have to do is press the spacebar to release when your bleeding out on the ground.
2) He talks about the amount of time it takes to toggle between weapons. Clearly the guy did not hotbar them, as visible in his own screenshots. You can drag and drop any weapon onto the hotbar and equip it in literally 2 seconds. I don't know if this guy was trying to split atoms here but it is like he didn't even try to learn how to play the game.
Again, not enough time left for me at work, but go read the thread about this "review" on the DF forums where the numerous holes were discussed ad nausium.

I agree you just have to make up your own mind as to who to believe.
Darkfall is a hard one to judge, there are no middle of the road reviews of the game so in order to find out you will have to play it yourself. It is incredibly hard to believe the "glowing" reviews and just as hard to believe the "trash" reviews. I for one will not be taking the chance until a free trial is released.

Lol agreed, I read some more because this is getting funny. I love this line "Not even old-school EverQuest - which was actually graphically superior" Whaaat? This guy is crazy if he thinks that anyone that has played both games is going to take him serious after that statement.
EDIT: ok just read their scoring policy here. The score is just made up by the reviewer. There is no panel of people or any fact checking. So he is just like an mmorpg.com corrospondent. Which takes the heat off of eurogamer I guess. Still though, I hope they didnt pay him for his "review".
Jeez... I just looked at the screenshots in the review. Not in a *SINGLE* one of them does he use the hotbar! It is completely empty in all of them.
Imagine what impact it will have on gameplay not to have ANY powers readily available on the keyboard, and instead have to open menus, scroll down, chooose ability etc...
Don't use the UI, and then complain about it?
Those screenshots are so pathetic, that it borders to him not having played the game AT ALL.

Actually, I really don't, the review seemed over the top (under the bottom?) with negativity and it seems to me he went into the game with a bad attitude and got what he was looking for.
Enough people are enjoying DF for me to think its not really a 2, nor do I believe its a 9.
Without playing it, I'd have to say it probably lands in the 4-6 range depending on what features a player enjoys.
Looking forward to other, more balanced reviews in the coming months.

Raspy, do you really think anyone's listening? Of course he's going to be taken seriously by people for whom the article confirms everything they've heard about a game they haven't played. How can you expect anything else?
The article does make a few good points, but overall should be taken with a grain of salt because the author played the game for a very brief amount of time, and didn't fully understand how to do everything. Some of the points he tries to make are mistakes resulting from a lack of understanding of the game mechanics, and others appear to be the result of venting because of his frustration with certain things he encountered in game. Most people who haven't played the game are not going to know that, and are going to be influenced by what they've seen of AV's PR ineptitude. Who can blame them?
That being said, there is still a lot of pointless bashing and lying. That's the nature of these forums. They're the new chatrooms.

Erm, he's actually been around for a few years - reviewing games for a popular UK print PC magazine (PCZone). I'm not quite sure why assume that people pop into existence the moment they do some work for Eurogamer - says something about the intelligence of DF players I guess. If you didn't pull assertions from your arse, you would have known that he has reviewed plenty of MMOs and his experience seems to go back to EQ era (dunno if he played UO or not). In fact he's one of the few reviewers I trust when it comes to MMOs, and has proven he tends to play them more than the majority of his peers (not a fanboy - just rare to find a reviewer who does play it for a while). So, given that you've embarrassed yourself with wild accusations based on no knowledge whatsoever, we'll assume you constructed the rest of your post in the same vain.

I was very negative at one point towards this game (I even wrote an "I quit" post here, that was very negative - my brother brought me back, however), but after having done the trials of both AoC and WAR, I can with confidence say, that DF is the best game out in this batch of games.
It has alot of shortcomings and weaknesses, but it has a core so strong, that it still beats everything out there. And with the changes coming every week, Im confident that this game will just get better and better.
AoC was a joke. Instancing and zoning? Are we still talking about MMO's? When I had to zone into a house in a city, I uninstalled in disgust.
WAR was a carbon copy of WoW. And as carbon copies go, they aren't as good as their originals. it wasn't as bad as AoC, but having the feeling that I was playing a game that I had already left (WoW), made me uninstall pretty fast.
DF is special. Hardcore, UI that could be better, grindy system, that needs tweaking, gathering and crafting that needs improvements (and in some case implementation - jewelcrafting is useless still). And many other flaws. But at the same time, there is nothing better out at the moment, and to be honest, there hasn't been something out this good since UO and SWG.
That is my review, and it has more merit than that eurogamer moron, because my review has merit.

Why does this game attract such weirdos again?
By clicking on the reviewers name you get a list of their contributions... he has 3, the Darkfall one and 2 for LotR. So how is my statement "who has only reviewed 2 games for eurogamer, the other being LotR" wrong?
And more than one statement in his "review" is blatantly wrong, I have posted 2 and others have posted many more... and this is a person you trust?

Not the sharpest knife in the picnic set are you. Let's start a bit more slowly. Firstly - do you understand the concept of working for different employers, sometimes even before working for Eurogamer? If so then the next step is to make the huge intellectual leap to the fact that he may have reviewed games before doing any for Eurogamer, even at the same time seeing as I suspect he is a freelancer.
Give your wild accusations based on ignorance, and your apparent inability to understand the simplest everyday concepts - no I don't trust you. Or rather I don't trust your opinion as you have demonstrated already you argue based on incomplete and wrong information

You can actually read the statement both ways. But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you meant his record with Eurogamer. Why then are you making such irrelevant and useless observations?
Anyway - the damage is done. To me the review meant that I would not have bought the game., but maybe would have tried the demo. Seeing the juvenile tantrums thrown by the game "community" , the reaction of the mods on the forum, then for me I think the community is doing a fine job of driving people away moreso than any review can?
Its a stark contrast to the one that got posted on MMORPG today.
Did you also notice that the DFO correspondent isn't the same guy from a month ago?
I didn't think that MMORPG.com had mulitple correspondants for each game.
What happend to the last guy?
Spot on review.
Edit: The random swing thing.
I think something may have got lost in translation with that part. Dunno.
What I got from it, and I agree with it 100%:
When he was saying that hitting in melee was more about luck then anything cause it's difficult to judge distance. It sount to me like that was were the randomness was coming from.
In melee the crosshair is in the middle of your head. When you fight someone you don't get an actually judge of distance because your own character is blocking your field of view. It's one of the things that leads to the circle sprint style of fighting. It's EASIER to tell how far away you are from your opponent when you're moving around them as apposed to standing in front of them. Either you're standing on top of the person, or your to far away, it makes fighting with swords and axes a pain in the ass; while two handed swords and pole arms become easier because you don't have to be that close to hit.
I didn't feel like he was being literal in that the hits were calculated randomly, but the way the melee fighting ends up being played out, it more of a random thing then a skill thing.

Why does this game attract such weirdos again?
Actually, I really don't, the review seemed over the top (under the bottom?) with negativity and it seems to me he went into the game with a bad attitude and got what he was looking for.
Enough people are enjoying DF for me to think its not really a 2, nor do I believe its a 9.
Without playing it, I'd have to say it probably lands in the 4-6 range depending on what features a player enjoys.
Looking forward to other, more balanced reviews in the coming months.

You pasted the same link twice.
Can you link the Massively again? Im a bit curious.

Whoops, Have changed the post with the correct links.
I never said anything about his previous "employment". I only mentioned that he had only reviewed 2 games for eurogamer. You have yet to show anything that proves me wrong on that point.

Lol, who said we care? Are you so vain, that we actually care that you want to stay away from this game?
It tells tales about you, that you are that affected by such a biased and flawed a review.
