That's like saying Mickey Mouse isn't a real cartoon because it's made for children. Here's a tip. They don't make MMOs specifically for Stephen Hawkings. Although he might enjoy them for all I know.

Have you played this game? I let my six year old daughter play and it's pretty clear that the game is designed for children.

The problem I have is the OP is breaking down FR like its a AAA serious MMO when it clearly isnt.

Just a quick glance at the features and restrictions of this game prove that its intended player base are little kids.

I think what he was trying to say is that Free Realms is no less of an MMO because it is aimed at children.

    I could be wrong though

Since its a MMO targeted toward children that basically should cut the game some slack since it's supposed to be easy.

I'm sorry but only pure themepark fanbois that want free rides could mistake FR as a real MMO. This game even holds your hand during name creation.

This is a joke post right?

Have you played many MMOs? If you had every single one of those features were in other MMOs long before Sony put them in a kiddie game lol.

I'm sure they exist in other games but none of the P2P games Ive played offered this

Read: EQ, AO, DAOC, WOW, EQ2, LOTRO, CONAN, WAR

clarification:  WOW and EQ2 let you teleport to Refer a Friend accounts, but thats a temporary promotion for 3 months

WoW has spells and mechanics that let you teleport to a group. Guild wars lets you change servers/instances.

Any sandbox/skill based game on the market lets you play multiple rolls.

Dude you do realize with that list of games you posted you've been playing the same MMO with a new graphical skin since EQ?

no wonder you find FR fresh and new.

    "dude" you can stop generalizing

Ive played COX and Guild Wars too -- but i prefer the job changing method in Free Realms

Ever tried playing an assasin in Guild Wars and using only the monk skills to heal for a mission with a pickup group?

I have -- its possible but not practical

while speaking of GuildWars and features,

a great feature that guild wars has:

once you add a someone to your friends list, you will see them online no matter what character they play

-- even if they create new characters

same works for Guild Wars  ignore list too

have no idea if other mmos do that but I wish more would

That's so people won't create L33tG4m3r names, or anything obscene or sexually suggestive. It's a game aimed at families and kids, remember?

It IS possible to give a character a custom name, but you then choose a temporary name pending approval.

See the highlighted text? All im saying is FR is a kids game so we dont need to pick it apart like the OP did.

Like I said before we should cut the game some slack due to its intended playerbase.

I have a feeling most people that pick this game apart are just SoE hating trolls I dont remember people bashing town town or Fusion fall like they are FR.

Nadia It doesn't really matter, My gripe isnt with you since you don't seem to be picking apart a kids game like a rabid darkfall hater.

If you like a  game thats great, hell who am I to say what game a person enjoys.

It just bugs me that people take FR so seriously to post these negative threads on a game with this type of playerbase focus.

My daughter doesnt care if the game is easy... hell if FR was just a character creation game and nothing else she would still think her avatar was cute and keep logging in.

It would take some reading comprehension on your part to figure that out. Judging from your one liner i wont hold my hopes up for you though. Depending on where you are on the IQ scale this can be easy or very very hard to grasp.

A company can create a product for a demographic but get sales for non target audiences. It's popular now with animated films for example, to make childrens movies that have a steady trickle of adult humour in them. This game may well try to emulate that feat. Going off on tangents about forums which are by their nature aimed at older players and resorting to personal attacks aren't giving you any credance. I still don't know what you are trying to impress upon the readers of your posts though, but that's probably just because I have a low IQ, according to a forum, so it must be fact.

Ah. Gotcha. I misread your post. My bad.

Yeah, I think a lot of general SOE hate is being thrown at FR, which IMO really isn't fair. I beta tested Free Realms and am goofing around with it now. It's a nice change of pace from the usual MMO's I play, and I don't even mind the bright, cheery, kid-friendly world. It's different, and I think that SOE really are on to something with it.

I think the reasons why people take it seriously to give criticism

    1.  SOE

    2.  new mmo -- all mmos take their forum beatings on launch

    3.  item mall game  (altho alot hasnt been said about this yet)

I haven't really insulted anybody but you which you rightfully deserved. If you want to be taken seriously or even remotely intelligent you should consider posting more than idiotic one-liners. That way you make it a lot harder for me to dismiss you as somebody that has nothing to contribute.

This second attempt here is more clever and it shows that you can have an original thought, so i will withdraw my original statement hinting at you being dumb now that i can see that you are not.

Now to adress what you said.

It's true that a game can hit an unintended audience. You don't have to look further than Wizard101. KingsIsle has said in two seperate interviews that i know off that they were surprised at how many adults were playing their game. This is a good example of what you are describing. I can't argue that the game is not aimed at kids. You have to be blind not to see that. My point is it is also aimed at adults alike..not just kids. The interview i linked from the creative director, The countless of posts from adults claiming to play Free Realms, The many adults you run into in the game itself is a pretty good indicator that this was not an accidental feat. You also have to be pretty blind not to see that as well.

Regardless of anything i don't call people dumb with low IQs just to throw a meaningless insult out there. If that were the case i would just have said "shutup stupid" and left it at that. If you come in like a caveman grunting a one-liner that doesn't adress anything anybody says in any meaningful way, it's pretty hard not to dismiss somebody like that for being a little on the Forrest Gump side.

I really can't help that other chick that felt my post was venomous even though it was pretty much on par with her own.

Once the goal posts are moveable, they are no longer relevant.

Imagine a football field with no set length, and no set height for the goal post. You just pick what works for you. Can't run 100 yards, set thee field to 20 yards. 100 yards not enough? Make it 300 yards. Set the goal post to 3 feet high, or 100 feet high. There is no standard, the choice is yours to make.

Now, it's the same game right? No, the game is no longer recognizeable. The same goes for a switch turning question marks on and off.

That is no where near the same as a game where question marks don't exist.

At the risk of maybe being informative, some quests do NOT have the glowing pathway to quest objectives. Namely, quests that are designed to involve exploring/looking around. I think it's less about being a children's game, and more about not being forced to do X to do Y. If you want to fight something, you don't have to explore to find a fight; the maps and quest markers will guide you there. Conversely, if you want to go exploring, you don't have to worry about getting ambushed along the way by monsters. (And if you WANT the experience of doing both - exploring in a dangerous environment - instances sometimes have exploration-based optional objectives)

I disagree, WAR gives players an option to switch off the quest helper.

It makes the games questing alot harder but even with that feature the game is still WAR.

You've missed the point. The game is still WAR, but it is not the same as a game with no quest helpers.

Allowing players to turn off the quest helpers does not make the game equilalent to a game with NO quest helpers. Just like having a football game that allows players to raise the goal post or lower it, is not the same as a football game with a set goal post height, EVEN IF SOME PLAYERS RAISE THE GOAL POST TO THE SAME HEIGHT AS THE SET GOAL POST.

I agree with your point but it seems like every mmo under the sun

has sites with guides or UIs to help with quests

I dont see that much different than toggable quest paths

Your wrong MMO's can and will evolve, Aion is showing what a MMO should be and EVE with it's ambitious Walking in Stations will  give new life to developing MMO's further. For the most part Free Realms is a kiddy game at best and that's all it will be family fun.

Yeah, eventhough I have it bookmarked, so I can play it during maintenances, or when I just feel like being a kid again, I play Free-Realms. The impression I get from it, is basically an MMO broken down into its most simplest form. I don't find that a bad quality, especially if their intended target is children, as it would appear. I'd definately reccommend the game to anyone who has children, and are mmo players, looking for something with training wheels for their kids.

  • RavanosRavanos Member Posts: 897

did you really expect free realms to revolutionize the genre? did you get confused by thier constant "Casual/Kid friendly MMO" campaign?

I don't know maybe i'm just not an idiot but i saw free realms for what it is, a MMO where parents and kids can play together and develope thier characters. whats next are you going to complain that Coloring books are the de-evolution of books because theres not enough indepth characters or storyline?

As has been stated in various forms or another by everyone before me, I do believe the game was intended to be played by children, or parents alongside said children. So I do believe having their hands held, and their diapers changed is a step in the right direction. Especially if they actually did change their diapers...god I'd love that...but like I said before, it is a great time filler between long updates, or if you just want to have some innocent fun. The bejweled like games, for mining and such, I found to be particularly interesting. I don't find this game to be a step down or up in the market, just a new market all together, aimed at our youth, to give them something to get their feet wet for when they get older. I think it's a great idea personally.

  • DuilyonDuilyon Member Posts: 326

The game is what it is. I don't how all these people can just post about a game that is too easy. Go play your old school "hardcore" games. SOE made the game for FAMILIES. That includes children so they have added somethings to guide players. If you don't like it dont play it.

If you know how to make the PERFECT MMO just go make one.

  • PonicoPonico Member UncommonPosts: 650

Free Realm is a lot of fun so people should shut up about it. Sony never said it was going to be a PVP die hard griefing game with epic 9 hours raid dungeons and player controled economie. They made free realm for kids and people that just want to play something here and there.

However, racing, crash derbie, pool, chess, checkers, combat and even cooking is quite fun in this game. Seriously, it aint that bad… of course, I’ll never spent months on it’s better then you might think.

This is my favorite post besides the Darkfall forum.

What gets me is people keep saying things like "appears to be for children", or "I think it's for kids".

    Hahah!

I don't know how it can be so obvious to me (and a lot of others here) that Free Realms is a kids game and so completely abstract to others.

I just found this game.  It's the de-evolution of adventure games in my opinion.  Way too easy.

"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
