I believe the next step in MMOs is to get away from meaningsless questing and getting involved with more epic stories of bigger scales.
I believe FFXI came too early. FFXI is an excellent example of a gameplay many new MMO players will appreciate very soon. I think most people are just getting tired of having it too easy during exploring, questing, and being able to solo and grind through 95% of the game. I`m sure very soon, more and more people will request a game where they are REALLY dependent on eachother THE WHOLE TIME, like in FFXI. The only problem with FFXI was that it didnt really get the population it really needed to funcion properly as it was intended.
I`m totally possitive, that this is what the market needs next. A MMO where everyone around you is actually important to YOU as a player, and that you feel important to other players at all times, not just when you go into a dungeon or instance or whatever you want to call it. We need more challanges and a sense of meaning in the world we`re playing and the community we`re playing with.
