Okay, so WoW haters can call me what they want, and WoW veterans can say what they will about this noob, but I am giving WoW a shot...
I have only been playing MMOs for about a year and a half, and I have tried FFXI, Rohan, Mabinogi, WAR, AoC, and LoTRO...I actually just left LoTRO because I got bored, and I have returned to WAR for lack of a better game...but I am always reading these WoW forums and people are always saying "I'm coming back because there is nothing better out there."
Well, I just picked up the trial, and I am going to judge it for myself...I highly doubt a game that so many people love can be bad...A game that so many other games have "copied" can be terrible...I can honestly say, I am intrigued, and I am exctied to try it...
I have tried all of the other MMOs that intrigued me, and to be honest...I have been left in disapointment...Maybe WoW is the game...who knows...
...I'll at least get an interesting 14 days from it before I actually decide to finally install EVE...

Good on you bud, try it and make your own mind up, fair play chap. I'd say that your best off just taking all games on their own merits nowadays. Too many fanboi's bum games up and too many drama trolls cuss games out. You know what you like, wnat and stuff so your the best judge for what you like. Hope it works out for you cheif and if your evr on Sporegar Alliance, look me up and i'd be happy to help you out bud.
I'd play wow, if it didn't look like wow. I could never get past the goofy graphics.
Well, thanks a lot...I was actually expecting a lot of haters to get on my case...i appreciate your friendliness!

I think you will like it. I played WOW for a bit over two years. I have moved on but have yet to find an MMO that captures my attention like WOW did.
if your thing is traditional mmo PVE and twitchy, competitive pvp you'll enjoy WoW.
I subscribe to 2 games at any given time and one of them has been WoW for about 3 years. (the other has changed) It's soloable, so if always grouping is your thing (see FFXI) you might not like it. Its graphix are campy but there is a lot of flavor and humor in there to make you smile and it's very polished.
If you end up not liking it, try vanguard or eq2 of you like fantasy. but you'll like it most likely.

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

trust me there is a reason why 11million+ of us are playing it. You'll enjoy it.
No there is not 11 million of you playing it.
Enjoy yourself. It's a very, very good game, polished, stable and packed with content. As Deathstiny said, it doesn't have millions of players for no good reason.
The ruptured capillaries in your nose belie the clarity of your wisdom.
You have sound reasons for giving the game a shot. So you know, Borean Tundra is the newest PvE server out there if you want to start on a newer server. It was released earlier this year. There's also a lot of information floating out there if you want to do some research on any particular part of the game, but you don't need to to enjoy the game. If you have any questions, just come back and ask. Contrary to what some might have you believe, there are a lot of good and mature people who play the game.
Exactly right; now there's 11 million and one. Was that your point?

If i may give you an advise which is maybe the best one can give to someone starting WoW: take your time, DON'T rush things.
Over the years, i developed some sort of love/hate-relationship to WoW and i finally quit because the hate took over in too many aspects of the game. But i'd still say that for someone new to it, for someone who is playing his very first character to max level it is by far the best gaming experience among today's mmorpgs.
But as i said, don't rush it because somebody or some friends tell you that "the game starts at 80", "get your priest up asap, we need healers", "hurry up man, you've gotta see Ulduar" or such. Don't listen to them. I've been into it from release on and i've seen ALOT of things in and around the game..but the greatest memories around WoW all revolve around my early days of leveling, being astounded by some many great things i discovered on my journey.
Try different classes even if you fall in love with the first one you picked. Turn the ingame-music on, take your pet-companion, roam and get lost in Ashenvale. Take your little warlock out and visit Whispering Shore, Agamand Mills in a rainy night or let your voidwalker fight murlocs around Lordarmere Lake. Those were the times when for many many players WoW was an absolute first class gaming experience that left all the other games lightyears behind -and rightfully so.
For about every levelrange, there are multiple zones to level in...you can level up more than one character without having to hit the same area twice. Only let down is that the lower zones and Azeroth isn't that populated anymore. Still for me WoW is the best journey leveling + the worst endgame.
Safe travels and have fun!
If you are looking for a good server, I highly recommend one that is medium to high population. DO NOT play on a low server unless you have real life friends there or such. A server with a higher population means there are more people on at any given time, therefore more people to group with, and also more people re-rolling alts...which gives you companions while you are leveling. My favorite server when I played was stormreaver which is one of the most progressed servers in north america. It is pvp, which means people can kill you while your questing, but you can also do the same to them.
Also, use the LFG channel "Looking for group" if you have picked up quests for a dungeon. You dont have to do the said dungeon quests right away, but rather putting yourself in LFG makes other people who may also have to run that dungeon the ability to know you are available.
Now, also something to look into are the wonderful add-ons that people create. Curse.com is a great site to look for add-ons. I'd recommend looking at the most popular addons. Things like Atlas loot, cartographer, gatherer, and questhelper are all very popular and very useful addons.
BUT, if you dont want to use any addons, then that is perfect fine aswell. I know a few players that preferred to not download a single addon and they got along fine just aswell.
I will say this, if you are ever struggling with leveling, and want things easier, download questhelper. It is an amazing addon.
Wow, thanks for all of the great advice and help everyone!!!
For every MMO i have played, I have first gone to the forums for advice, and I can honestly say, I have gotten the most, and best advice from this thread.....thanks everyone...
...if there are more people like you all in game, I think I am in for a pretty good experience!

Thats active subscriptions Mr. Man, no one pays 15$ twice for something they dont like.
Yes It's good, now stop bashing things you dont know crap about and die in a fire.
Everyone look at my first post. See how early I posted in the thread? Now don't you think I thought of giving him tons of advice, about classes, addons, and so on? Know why I didn't? Because he is new. Picture yourself just starting out. You're already being overwhelmed with normal information the game throws at you. All of us throwing "advice" at him when he doesn't even have the basics down will only overload his brain. It's better to just be available for questions as they do come up. He'll learn things as he goes on, like most people do. Overwhelming him, trying to teach him many things before he's even started the game isn't good.
I know everyone is just trying to be helpful, but I wish people would think for a change.

I don't understand, Celine Dion has such a wonderful voice.
WoW is an excellent MMO, however after playing it for two years I'm tired of it, I have a relatively short attention span so I'm guessing you'll get atleast the same amount of fun out of it.
Since you've played FFXI I'm going to say that WoW is at the other end of the spectrum, but the fun comes from the same places. Make friends and join a guild, you'll have a lot more fun that way than soloing.
Words...fail...me. Dare I cite the myriad of examples that exist in society that completely falsify this statement?
Nah...would be lost on the intended target.
WoW isn't a bad game. It's an average game with a TERRIBLE community. You will be bored with it shortly.

Rude, arrogant and self serveing and you dare to comment on the community on WoW? people like you are the ones best avoided my friend, your attitude stinks.
And you don't even make a valid point either : "Dare I cite the myriad of examples that exist in society that completely falsify this statement?".
Dare i cite those that bare out the comment? as you said might be lost on you though.
if you could not keep with WAR, i bet you will not like WoW either. WAR is better in EVERY aspect apart from amount of dungeons maybe
anyway, you will be making huge mistake judging game basing on number of subs. wow is mass product with no soul, like mcdonalds or britney spears. if you are average person, you can like it to some level. but considering your mmo experience.....not a chance. besides, second life has probably more subs. is it better?
only area in which wow is superior are raids. if you are raid grinder, play it
last thing about number of subs: wow players have the same problem Magic the Gathering players have. they spent too much of their time and money too dedicate themselves to another game, even though their hobby is very average. moreover, they could have met some friends and now are paying fee only to loginto game for chatting with them. i personally know a few people who treat wow just as graphical chat,

Find a guild... a good guild.
'Good guild' doesn't necessarily mean they have Ulduar on farm status.
'Good guild' doesn't even mean they are all 80's.
Good guild, imho, means that the players in the guild are people that you get along with and enjoy playing with.
The WoW community gets a bad wrap from the players that try to come across as 'elite' or 'know-it-all pro'. These people spend their time trolling once they hit 80 and get a few epic's. I would personally love to see all of these players filtered out and sent to servers for 'that type of player/personality'.
Seriously, find yourself a good guild and WoW can be a fun game.

Don't underestimate my intelligence okay, smart guy...
I have grown bored of all of the other MMOs I have played aside from WAR... I know several people who play WoW and love it... These people I know that play it aren't 12 year old brats who go and swear at everyone on the Chat Channels, and they are not MMO elitists who consider everyone as inferior to them as you do...
Tons of people play this game, the entire community cannot be terrible...
The game must be accessible yet also challenging, it must be fun, if it weren't nobody would be playing right?
WAR is fun, LotRO is fun, AoC is even fun, they just don't have the staying power WoW does, that is why people play those games and then move on....
People play WoW for years....many quit, but many go back to it....there must be some draw to the game, so don't come at me like I am some know nothing kid okay... I have thought long about whether or not I should give it a try and despite what all of the haters say, I decided I would try it...
Why you might ask?...BECAUSE I WANT TO...people play it for a reason...I want to know what that reason is...but maybe all of this is lost on you...
