Lol, something I noticed too.
Whilst the above screenshots may be pretty, I've always had two problems with Vanguard's graphics - the colours appear very washed-out and pale, and objects look extremely fake compared to their surroundings. Rocks, for example, just look so out of place and don't feel like they blend in with the surrounding terrain as well as they should.
I'm not a graphics whore though, so graphical issues are not a huge worry to me.
Those were precisely the same issues I had.... but similarly, I did not stop playing VG because of these, eye candy was always secondary for me. It was the total barrenness of the game. I have seen 1 or 2 players in a 2 hour playing session. Very depressing!

My thoughts exactly. A huge world and a lower-than-average population makes for a bad combination.
The reason I quit, however, was due to the bugs and extreme lag spikes that I never had in any other game.
I too though LotrO had great graphics, but once I fired up VG with the new quad system, I was basically blown away. Think the style of LotrO is awesome, but graphically, VG is just amazing... Again, LotrO has has great art direction, but where it fails me graphically is how they do the trees and far away views, the imposter trees should look like how VG did theres, it would bring LotRO into a new light if Turbine could fix the there distance blur. I realize that is how the game pops in the forground, by having an amazing background..
I actually have to disagree with you there. The far off trees in LOTRO are made more to be like an impressionistic painting. I really like how they did it and it's one of the more artistically interesting things that the world of LOTRO has. It would be a shame to change that. In my opinion the background works exceptionally well and was one of the things that I positively commented on during closed beta. It really took some talent to add that. I would also propose that at times it conjures Maxfield Parish (though he was not part of the impressionistic movement he was alive during it.)
Where LOTRO falls in my opinion are the horrible character models and gear.
I have some screenshots where that those trees in LotrO are in now way a impressionist veiw of tolkein, iti sjust really horrible around the "almost" diffused blur effect that has a very bad dark color around it. I have helld in my dislike for this aspec for a while, but to move forward in LotRO I need to be honest about some things.
Seriouly think if Turbine would create a background effect like Hellgate london, or Vanguard, it would make the world , that much more emmersive and ellusive.
Imagine this screen shot with a beautiful subtle guassian blur effect like in Hellgat ...
I'm sorry but that screen shot proves my point.
If you don't like it then fine. In no way would I try to force my taste on you. But those trees in the background ARE impressionist and I think they are great. I would also say they are reminicenst of Maxfield parish (whos is not of the impressionist school but is an american painter.
It also reminds me seurat who is an impressionist.
I'm sorry but those distant trees in LOTRO, to me, are absolutely beautiful.
Apparently there is a group that is call the american impressionists. The above is an example and those distant trees seem somewhat reminiscent.

Now if all you want just good eye candy you should play AoC, it blows LoTRO and Vanguard out of the water graphics wise.
This is one of those totally unsupportable style preference things. While there is no question that AoC went for a "unique" style, I absolutely hate it.
Their attempt to recreate the sort of gritty and barren backgrounds of a Frazetta painting come across as muddy, blurred and confused - I've never played a game where it was more painful to just look at a townscape. Same sort of thing with the characters, I think their skeletal animations are more than a bit off - nothing looks quite right movement wise.
As for the Vanguard vs LotRO thing...I think both are great games (purely in terms of game play and mechanics), I like the class diversity of Vanguard more but the universe is completely lacking...talk about boring "white-bread generic fantasy 101". The vanguard universe has no compelling hook and no tie in to anything interesting. VG is also slightly less polished (although completely playable)
Of course the biggest difference is that VG is on life support and has virtually no players and no signs of getting more...while LotRO is still growing significantly.
Eh...I don't know. I agree with Jackdog from a straight up graphics point of view AoC is incredible. Of course, in relation to anything else save maybe combat style AoC is garbage compared to VG and Rings.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

Too bad we can't all "roll our own game " LOL , hmm I will take landscapes from LoTRO, animations from EQII, game play from L:oTRO, skill tree design from EvE, UI from Horizons, character models form AoC ....etc etc
None of these games are perfect and some are less perfect than others, you just have to choose which one feels the best overall for you. For me it is LoTRO but I not fond of Moria and have a definite wait and see what the next paid expansion will bring attitude.
I am starting to think EvE may be my next long term game. I am pretty bored up with fantasy and the super hero thing just is not my cup of tea either. I could use a good sci fi game but be damned if I will hold my breath and put any hope in the Star Trek or the new Star Wars. I will just sit back and just wait and see what their release brings. In the mean time I still have my lifetime sub for LoTRO which was the best 200 bucks I ever spent on gaming. I figure it cost me around a nickel or so per hour played so far

Same here man.
Leveled my main to 60, reached Lorien, and stopped. That damn "brick wall" effect caught up with me. Ironically, the same day when my sub was extended for another 6 months )
Also agree on the fantasy-theme jadedness. I participated in the Alpha for Fallen Earth - I will definitely be waiting for that title. I was in beta for Neocron, and I still feel sad when i think of the potential that game had, and how it died
