"SOE has never and will not ever shut down a MMO"

GravezGravez Member Posts: 249

Dear MxO Subscriber,

We want to inform you that on June 1, 2009, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) will suspend commercial services of THE MATRIX ONLINE (MxO). However, SOE will continue to operate the game service and players will still be able to play MxO through July 31, 2009.

As of June 1, 2009, SOE will no longer offer customer support or provide updates for MxO, and active subscribers with accounts in good standing will not be billed after that date. MxO subscribers who have prepaid subscription time that extends their subscription period past June 1, 2009 will receive a pro-rated refund for any such pre-paid excess subscription payments*. Such refunds are expected to be issued by October 1, 2009.

We welcome those active MxO subscribers in good standing to play one or all of the following SOE massively-multiplayer online PC games at full paid subscriber status at no cost between June 1, 2009 and July 31, 2009 (subject to the terms and conditions described below) using the same Station Account you use to subscribe to MxO**: Free Realms™, EverQuest®, EverQuest® II, and Star Wars Galaxies™. To access and download the game software for EverQuest, EverQuest II, or Star Wars Galaxies, begin by downloading Station Launcher here for free: http://launcher.station.sony.com/. To initiate the download of Station Launcher simply click on the "DOWNLOAD BETA" button. Once the download is complete, Station Launcher will serve as your one stop shop for access to all the identified online games except Free Realms, which can be found at www.freerealms.com.

We value having you in our player community and hope that you will find a new home in one of these other SOE games during this trial period.

During the last two weeks that MxO will be available, we intend to initiate a world-ending event and invite our active MxO subscribers with accounts in good standing to participate in bringing Mega City down together. We will go out with the same level of dramatic in-game event that has kept this game exciting over the years. Get ready to jack in and become part of the final chapter of the story!

We appreciate your loyalty and commitment and look forward to seeing you in another SOE game.

Sincerely,

Sony Online Entertainment

I don't understand the title.  Had someone made that claim in the past?

As I recall yes that claim had been made in the past... guess that claim can't be made anymore.

Looks like even Station Pass life support has limits.

You beat me to it! I was about to make the same title and post.

Yes there has been claims in the past that SOE never shuts down games, this may be the beginning and I can see PlanetSide being next, and possibly PotBS a few years from now.

I can see them closing Planetside and maybe even SWG after KoTOR comes out but to say that SOE would close POTBS when all they do is the billing is funny the game is designed and run by Flying Labs Software although you did say a few years which would make it like 3 or 4 years which is much longer than alot of mmos seem to make it these days.  I still dont see why any cares when these close a game unless they play it and IMO unless a game is losing money why not keep it open for those who enjoy it.

Wow how much does SOE hate Vanguard to leave it off the free list.  Why are they so scared that people will play Vanguard rather than their beloved EQ2.

I think it has something to do with their arrangement with Sigil. When we asked about adding VG to the station pass back when they switched from MS to SOE they were very vague about it then.

I would love to see SWG and Planetside close purely because they were both games I really loved and SOE ruined them.

VG is a part of the Station All Access deal, I play it from time to time when I resub on EQ2 (which I only do with Station access since I'm a craft-o-holic and thus need all those spaces for crafters)

VG is availabe on Station Pass if a subscriber buys the game first.

$OE has been removing the 'dead wood' in one form or another for a while, but it is just more obvious with the formal cancellation of Matrix. $OE would do better by addressing what is causing the 'dead wood' in the first place.

I'm pretty sure that Vanguard was part of the station pass at release.  That was the first time I heard people detailing how the revenue is split between games for access pass members.

As to why vanguard was left off the list, I think that answers its own question.  SOE gave up on the game the day they bought it which is why they gave all the vanguard players free EQ2+expansion+2 free months in an attempt to convert them.   They know Vanguard has no future so there is little reason to try to attract players to it.

Honestly this message could have been about MxO, Vanguard or Planetside as I doubt there is very little difference in any of the populations.  How many SOE fan faires have forgotten to include one of those three games in the events over the years.  Even SWG isn't far ahead of those in terms of players, but at least the loot cards are making some money it might be the last of those to go once they add more games to the list.

but, but wouldn't that imply listening to the players?

Why anyone would be surpised that a company would shut down servers on a game that doesnt turn a profit is almost as hard to understand that some are over joyed that it happens.  Such anger over a video game company is fascinating , carry on.

LOL! Yeah, it would and most of us know how unlikely that is. It would also imply putting competent business management in place and operate in an ethical business manner, which are even more unlikely.

Um the title of the post maybe?

Did anyone honestly expect MxO to last this long? I mean, it's been almost half a decade since The Matrix was culturally relavent. How are you going to get new subs if the game premise seems stale?

  • rznkainrznkain Member Posts: 539

All of SOE hating tards that claim SOE made that statement I wanna see a direct quote from SOE sayin it.Good luck on finding one because SOE never said it players said that because they have kept low population crap games like MXO and Planetside and SWG active no where did SOE say we will  always keep a game up regardless.MX O was bad way before SOE bought it I know I bought MXO at launch it was a horrible mess,.fact is it lasted 3.5 years longer than it would had if SOE hadn'rt bought it so to all you crybabies blaming SOE should think SOE has kept quite a few games open that would have been shut down long ago in other companies hands like say EA .Vanguard sure would not have made it a year if it had not been for SOE and that game has and continues to get better underneath SOE's management.

Just because they said it once, doesn't mean they will not. They said in the knowledge that all their MMOs were making a good enough profit, when one begins to make too little for the cost, or none at all, then you must shut it down. SOE takes way too much heat, because they DID revolutionize the market, and they DO have good games.

your interpretation then. for me the title merely attempts to point out that SOE has done what they said will not do. By their history this should not surprise anyone, and if you read happiness in that title then that is how YOU want to read it.

Im not sure soe said that to start with and if you re read all the posts as you claim and did not see any happiness in an SOE title failing then perhaps its what YOU deny seeing. In fact a couple of threads suggest more titles for SOE getting the axe.  No matter, as i said, carry on it will play out as all these threads do with little variation.
