Vanguard will be next in line. Then VG's and MxO's devs can move to SWG, so they get a total of 4 devs!! If this wont bring preNGE servers back, then I dont know what will.

Wow how much does SOE hate Vanguard to leave it off the free list. Why are they so scared that people will play Vanguard rather than their beloved EQ2.
I think it has something to do with their arrangement with Sigil. When we asked about adding VG to the station pass back when they switched from MS to SOE they were very vague about it then.
I was sure VG was part of Station Pass even when it was run by Sigil...
VG is availabe on Station Pass if a subscriber buys the game first.
$OE has been removing the 'dead wood' in one form or another for a while, but it is just more obvious with the formal cancellation of Matrix. $OE would do better by addressing what is causing the 'dead wood' in the first place.
but, but wouldn't that imply listening to the players?
But wouldn't that imply ALL players are ALWAYS right? and that ALL players agree on everything?and wouldn't that imply that the people who invest nothing in the game ,know what is better for the game than the people that put the money into running the game?
All i have seen over my MANY years of gaming is SOE bailing out failing games and often saving them from bankruptcy, name in point >>>the Final Fantasy series, arguably one of the highest selling franchises of all time.Soe practically OWNED the console market for MANY years because of the games they back and offered for the Playstation,i would say this si a company with a track record of KNOWING the business end of things,at least a heck of a lot more than the average JOE.
IMO SOE and the original post ,shows they are handling the departure of MXO VERY professionally, probably better than anyone else would have handled it.

no, it doesn't mean players are always right, nor does it mean that everything players ask for is what its good for the game.
if it were up to many players, there'd be no money sinks, no gaming down-time, free loot, instant travel anywhere; solo gaming capabilities throughout... I've seen it happen, people or devs posting on the forums asking or promising this and everyone rejoices. Kinda like Palpatine promise to create the Galactic Empire to everyones delight.
But what happens down the road? Immersion is gone; ultra inflation; instant and/or minimum effort gratification; lack of player interaction... ultimatelly many players leave the game (even those who asked for those same things in the first place).
What has SOE done wrong? Interpret and balance what "players want" for the best of the game.
Game too hard to get into? Create a better tutorial not a new game.
Jedi too hard to attain? Stick to your guns (for the sake of timeline, story and those who made it already) but give them some downside to make other professions more appealing (eg. jedi innability to engage in the game's economy since they are supposedly reclusive - cannot trade but amongst themselves or use the bazaar etc. By having to rely on other jedi and their own loot to surivive they have their own separate gaming experience maybe not everyone is so willing to do). Don't like it? be a mortal like everyone else but loose your GCW Alpha status.
Shuttles taking too long? Add some entertainment or stuff to keep players busy at starpots while they wait, instead of ITV. ITV has destroyed all bottlenecks in the game which were essential for player interaction which was needed pre-cu, since players depended on other players. ITV has also removed all risk and challenge of travelling to locations; and made shuttleports and starports obsolete. alternatively make people launch their ship to space and hypersapce from there (instead of the easy click-button ship transportation; and make them subject to being attacked in the process).
Not enough entertainers or doctors to heal wounds? Well maybe that is because they are hologrinding so remove hologrinding, as it should have never been implemented.
the list is endless but SOE's inability to interpret player feedback and addopt it in a way which is not harmful to the game in the long run has led to their failure.
lol Again post a source for where SOE said they would never shut down a mmog. You all wanna keep whining about it but no one can provide one shred of proof that they said it which they sure never did say it.I am so happy they changed SWG so I can listen to all you bitter nerd boys cry and cry about SOE.
Wow quite a shame really. MxO "could" have been a great game based on the Matrix universe. Alas it was another crappy movie based game. I was in the beta for this game and saw how horrible it was then. Then SOE picked the game up and you KNEW it wasn't going to get any better but much worse. Just look at SWG and the tragedy SOE did to that!!! Alas, we can only hope the same happens soon for SWG as it would vindicate all of us who were put through the NGE!!!

Well its not really suprising, but that still doesnt make me worry yet. SWG is still making money for SOE and LA, if the new SWTOR causes a massive permanant loss in subs Im sure they will turn it off. Hard to say whats going to happen. Me I feel like whats left playing are diehards. About 70-100k diehards, then again SWTOR isnt even close to a mmo. Its going to be a single player story based game, heavyly instanced. Sure youll have some dueling but is it even going to be much more than that?
Im sure people are dreaming of massive battle, but ehh SWG proved that technology isnt thier yet. If you get more than 200 people in one spot it will create tremendous lagg. Thats why all FPS games limit the maps to 64. If you go over that magic number no private server on this planet can handle that much info swapping. People complain about SOE servers, but Ive looked at server speeds and SOE has or had the top speeded servers last year.
We welcome those active MxO subscribers in good standing to play one or all of the following SOE massively-multiplayer online PC games at full paid subscriber status at no cost between June 1, 2009 and July 31, 2009 (subject to the terms and conditions described below) using the same Station Account you use to subscribe to MxO**: Free Realms™, EverQuest®, EverQuest® II, and Star Wars Galaxies™.

It's not on the list because it's next. VG having many more subs than Matrix is highly doubtful.
As far as the notice, I find it amusing that they have been happy to collect everyones' money for Matrix, but when the game ends, you have to wait almost 5 months to get your money back.

Don't be so dramatic. I think everyone is familiar with how soe doesn't listen to players. Would you like a few quotes of smedly groveling to the customers and promising to listen to them more in the future? Despite your clever jibe, I am sure you know exactly what was being said.
As for soe bailing out games? Sony is not responsible for the success that is the final fantasy series. That is unless you want to blame sony for every game that sucked on the play station series? Companies that make games are ultimaely responsible for the level of success their games receive. Just like SOE isn't to blame for the condition MxO and Vanguard were in when they were acquired, but they certainly did not put any real effort into improving what they got to make a serious effort to revive them. They bought MxO for the DC license and they bought Vanguard so that some company with a real interest wouldn't make a serious go of it. SOE isn't some benevolent company that rescues games. Most actually view them as the opposite.
No one handling a game closure better than soe? I don't agree. Two days advance notice before they simply walk away from the game and stop supporting it? Seriously two days? Compare that to NCSofts tabula rasa closing.
NCsoft announced the closer over 3 months ahead of time. They made the game free to play for anyone for 2 months. Gave 3 free months of gameplay to their other titles. Supported the game right up to the end.
MxO closing could have been handled worse, but things are what they are.

Ok. So I did a post search and couldn't find one single post that said that SOE will never shut down an mmo. I only found two where someone said 'SOE has never shut down a game' - which up to this time was true.
I'm not denying that there may be a few random posts out there making this claim; but to make a 'ha ha you were wrong' post about an insignificant gripe made by so few that I couldn't find a single post making your claims.......
Perhaps, not being a fan of SOE, secretly you hated the station pass because YOU felt it would keep dead games alive forever; and if that's the case, ha ha, look at you.

uh no your can look off these forums and still find out that they have never said this. Up intill now they haven't shut down a game which is what started this myth. However, if SWG keeps declining to the point that they are losing money then yeah they will bring her down for good.

Then prove me wrong. I suggest after 30 minutes of not finding it you give up; because if it takes longer than that, it proves the concept is faulty as it is obviously NOT a major trend in SOE fanboism.
No where do I see anyone in this post say soe made those claims save rznkain. If I am wrong, please show me, because I don't see it.
The title is posted as a quote. That would suggest they are stating that someone said it. Rzn asked for a link to where SOE said it. The response was that SOE didn't but the "SOE apologists" did. So the next request was for where they said it, and no link could be provided.
The OP created an argument against a position that didn't exist.

John Smedley: Great subscriber bases for EverQuest and EverQuest 2 and Galaxies, pretty much. I will tell you, I'm as surprised as anyone that the longevity of EverQuest. Our first spreadsheet had this thing running for about two years, and even that we thought was a little optimistic. Nine years later you go, "wow". There's still a large community there. I edited out my comment while you were still posting this as I reread the title and realized that is where the comment came from. Small DOH moment on my part.
However I don't think anyone was ever claiming soe made a statement saying they would never shut a game down, but there was a general feeling that a game could live on station pass without the need to shut it down. SOE has shown they are willing to let games linger around with little to no support just to give the perception of choices by signing up for station pass, so why kill a game? The closing of Mxo shows there is a threshhold and it make the mortality of even station pass games a reality.
The argument is a sense does exist and I was a pretty firm believer in the spirit of the title of the thread. It wasn't just something people on one side of a discussion used. I've seen soe supporters and critcs both make statements along those lines.
Obviously saying 'never' invalidates any comment like this, but the spirit of it was believable for a long time, because honestly if SWG, Planetside, Vanguard or Matrix were owned by most other companies they would have been shut down years ago. Without the saftey of station pass to offset costs or limited revenue they just are not very viable as a single entity.
Now, As most of you know, I don't post much on this biased site( Wave Ico). But with the Duel announcements that The Matrix will soon be dark and SWG has to endure yet another layer of TCG stupidity, it boggles the mind to how SOE can exist with Companies struggling to stay solvent in this economy.

I am not aware of SOE ever saying it...but SOE apologists have repeatedly which they will not be able to any longer.

The search function on this site is borked beyond shit. So because you couldn't find it with the screwed up search function really doesn't prove your point.

uh no your can look off these forums and still find out that they have never said this.

Nevermind

As long as people pay us money and we love what we do, we'll keep running it.

Maybe they didn't love the Matrix anymore.
Or maybe no one was paying for it anymore.
