Will this game just be a Gankfest the second a person leaves a town? Will people that enjoy aspects like crafting, pve and socializing (RP) have safer areas to play in (kinda like Eve's empire space)?
Sigh, the towns will be safe zones like DFO is what I'm thinking. Maybe safer. If you don't want to suffer at the hands of grifers then maybe an FFA PvP game isn't for you.
Tyvm for the info. I will still try it out anyway even though I prefer my pvp full loot games to have safer areas for non-combatant players.
Imo DF has already proven a failure in my eyes due to no safer areas (small tower areas don;t count its too small of an area).
I read earthrise will be more like Eve so ill try that along with MO since i'm a sandbox fan.
Safe zones are for carebears, but I think your house is a safe zone if you lock the door behind you.
Does it make you feel good to call people carebears? Since you seem to know near nothing about the games you actually like (FFApvp sandbox) let me help you a bit.
Safe zones give a false sense of security in sandbox games. A Smart and skillfull player will always find ways around a restricted safe area to kill and abuse someone.
Maybe I'm just smarter than you are? Because I know how to turn people red in these types of areas.
So no Safe of Safer zones aren't for carebears. Learn a little about these games before you post,it makes you look like you never played one of these games before.
In UO you could be killed in your house if you weren't careful. I've thrown down AOE spells near the walls and have killed macro'ers while they were away at work. It can be done.. there are ways. That doesn't mean it won't be declared a bug and fixed promptly.
Just because you want some peace and quiet on occasion doesn't mean you're a carebear. That's pretty funny. By that definition, we are all 'carebears'.

Personally i got the idea that MO has no clue what their final edition will involve, they seem to change direction from time to time or are quite vague in definitions.
IMO any game that is JUST a ffa pvp should not be listed here on MMORPG.When i joined this site ,i thought the title said it all,it was a RPG environment, for rpg fans to discuss such games. It has become more of a discussion about PVP aspects than anything over the last year, sad really. It takes away from the title of this site.
Too bad Planet/gamespy realms are a little too massive ,they have the best setup offering PVP sites/RPG sites all the different genres have their own site. Some Titles even have their own realm/site.
I am sure MO will be a decent game ,at least on par with other games that offer PVP as its main core idea, but i doubt it will have any focus on PVE other than to say we have mobs to kill.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

I always hated the term Carebear. its freaking retarded to call people that just want some freedom of play other than straight up pvp conflict 24/7.
Safer areas give people some breathing room, maybe even a chance to learn mechanics instead of being ganked right away.
Anyway when I say turning someone red I don't mean exploiting walls I mean taking advantage of someones stupidity.
Everyone can enjoy a safer area its not only a carebear zone, the guy I quoted is just trying to seem bad ass on the internet.

Here's an exploit that I used regularly.
I attacked someone outside of town. I then followed them in town, since I am not a criminal to the guards due to not attacking in town. I stop attacking them and kite them around while they are in combat mode.. then my criminal tag wears off and they are now a criminal for attacking me(an innocent) and the guards whack them.. I loot them.. laugh. It was later changed and people could call the guards on you, but it was a way around the law for the time being.
I'm interested to see how SV deals with people getting in the way of your line of sight while attacking from ranged. If you're not grouped and an innocent jumped in front of you and turns you into a criminal... you are fair game. To everyone..

OMG it was a joke. Anyways, I know just as much about the game that you do unless you actively in alpha testing. The guy was asking for true safe zones where you can't be attacked at all, that would be "carebare"

No, from what I hear its going to be a near total gankfest. The Dev's(and their fans) seem to have a near hysterical horror of all things CareBear. Its free for all ganking and full loot. Which of course seriously niches it from the very start. Its too bad as there are a lot more CareBears than there are "hard core" gankers out there.
Originally posted by DAS1337 Uhm. RPG has nothing to do with gankfests.
Though, I would say that the sandbox games have been gankfests.. at least DF. UO and Shadowbane were pretty mild compared to DF though. The mentality of todays gamer is pretty ruthless. If you want to blame anyone, blame the players. I think there should be a significant penalty for being a murderer in a game like this. Stat loss, **jail time**, confiscated bank funds and items.. (if you have a bank). Just stat loss and being able to be attacked isn't enough. It also seems as though stat loss may not be a 100% thing. To prevent said gankfests.. it has to be harsher. People will still do it.. but they will be very careful about how they go about it. You know, kind of like real criminals?
but gankers are a part of RPG. Unless the only available aspect of RPG is to be a ganker - I clearly mentioned it in my earlier post.
And I clearly said: don't judge a game by DFo's measure. You personally said that SV is basing on UO, so why you still insist on DFo ? I just don't understand your thinking.
One time I can agre with you, but your second post pisses me off so much, that I could grief you using my "[" key.
grrrr

You obviously heared wrong.
The dev's have stated that instead of having two server types to cater for pve and pvp minded people, they aim to have one single ruleset to rule them all.
Which means: freedom to attack players almost everywhere BUT with dire consequences for the killer.
Pretty much like real life, if you ask me.
They go out on a limb to balance risk and reward in regard to ganking while still having total freedom it seems. I think they should be applauded for that but we can't tell yet in what way these mechanics will impact the game.

I've seen these "dire consequences" in many other games... Some how it never quite works out the way the Dev's claim that it will... They've all turned in to free for all gankfests, and thus seriously limited the demographics they appeal to. Different things for different people. Given the hysteria about all things CareBear on their forums, I can't say that I'd expect anything else from a free for all, full loot game. As I said, its too bad as they've obviously put a great deal of time, talent and money into the game. But it would hardly be the first game(or the last for that matter) that niches itself from the start by trying to appeal to the "hard core" ganking types. <shrug>

Gonna agree with this guy. A person like me always finds a way around mechanics. Either through exploit or taking advantage of stupidity and lack of knowledge of the game.
Just reading about MOs crafting system is kinda sad knowing that most of the people that really love crafting wont bother since they will be wtfpwn'd every time they go out to harvest anything.

Don't forget about hardcoded NPC guilds opened for everyone. If such guilds will unite 2-3k soloers, then you better watch out who are you going to kill, or worse: gank

Sure. But I wasn't saying that there won't be gankers in MO at all. I'm just saying that with the mechanics they implement they hope to tone down on the number of casual gankers. I wouldn't mind occasional statloss either, but if I recall my own gankage in other games I have to say that only about 20% was with full conviction.
80% of the kills (or attempts) I made after a quick consideration; "Hey, a red. Shall I try and kill this guy? Hmm... ya/na"
And MO is trying to implement some extra reasons for a "na" choice. Also out of towns with that "murder token" system.
But like I said: whatever they do, they don't want to prevent ganking alltogether, and those who don't mind low stats or other possible sanctions will still do so.

Sigh, the towns will be safe zones like DFO is what I'm thinking. Maybe safer. If you don't want to suffer at the hands of grifers then maybe an FFA PvP game isn't for you.
*sigh*
Typical elitist response from people who think they are something special because they want to be able to gank people everywhere. Newsflash for you, e-geek, FFA PvP games can have safe zones. Eve has alot of safe zones and it is one of the best FFA PvP games ever made.

He wasn't tell you what he wanted in the game, or what he thought should be there, he was telling you what the game will be like. And he's accurate.
The only place you are truly safe will be in your own home, with the door locked. Towns will have guards, and they will defend you if attacked, but that's about as close to a safe zone as you're going to get.
This game is designed to allow people to be ganked anywhere, so don't criticize those who choose to take part of it. All elitism aside, if you're not up to getting ganked anywhere and everywhere, this game really isn't for you.

As I've stated before, if the Dev's want to spend millions and millions of dollars, as well as years of work to niche their game from the very start, thats their business(shrug). But there are a lot more CareBears than there are gankers and griefers. If they can't be bothered to provide PvE as well as PvP rule set servers, then its their own fault if they miss out on all of that extra money.
There is stat loss in game...people wont be ganking everyone 24/7 because if they die while heavily red, theyll be spending time grinding their skills back up

Thats been tried, over and over again in other games. They *still* turned in to gankfests. Gankers are just as creative(if not more so) as the Dev's.Thats been demonstrated time after time, in game after game.

Well, we shouldn't exagerate. How many mmorpgs with ffa pvp in the whole world have seen the light so far? I know of not more than a handfull. I think the devs are pretty much aware of how other games panned out in this regard. We have yet to see how their take on this will work out. Personally I think their ideal would be to have some pvp everywhere, occasionaly, rather than a full fledged gank fest the moment you step outside of guard range.

This idea has been very common among the Asian grinder type game, just to name some. You are familiar with how many of those there are? Each game seems to think that their take on free for all PvP and full loot is going to be some how "different".
The reality is that simply by being FFA/full loot they attract the very type of player they are claiming to seek to inhibit. If the Dev's wish to niche their own game from launch, its their own concern. To each their own<shrug>.

Well, we can only wait and see for what kind of players this game will cater. It might just be a great title for roleplayers as well depending on how much widespread and common the gankage will be. They sure did a lot of effort to please that group as well.

Time will tell.
I think it's going to encourage a lot of guild activity, and bring in to play a lot of politics, treaties between guilds, etc. I'm looking forward to that aspect of the game.
The devs of MO have stated that they want the world to be as true to a free world as possible. That means you can kill anybody, anywhere and at any time, or just pick their pockets. There has been some talk about what all will be able to be stolen and how difficult it will be to actually do.
While there will not be any one-shot, all-seeing eyes to prevent you from killing someone there will be guards. So if you start a fight in a major city you can expect that some reasonably powerful guards will swarm you. The general impression is that even a 'maxxed' character would not simply be able to run around a major city killing all of the guards and players along their way. So you might be able to kill one or two guards and then try to make a break for it, but they're going for a sense of realism, so eventually either guards powerful enough to kill you will pop up or you'll get swarmed.
This could all get changed though, but I doubt it will. I'm perfectly content to sit on my hands and wait.

Its too bad as there are a lot more CareBears than there are "hard core" gankers out there.
but gankers are a part of RPG. Unless the only available aspect of RPG is to be a ganker - I clearly mentioned it in my earlier post.
And I clearly said: don't judge a game by DFo's measure.
You personally said that SV is basing on UO, so why you still insist on DFo ? I just don't understand your thinking.
One time I can agre with you, but your second post pisses me off so much, that I could grief you using my "[" key.
grrrr
Love such irony

We'll see.
