Well, it is never good for the consumers  when one company have over half the market of something, whatever that market is.

It is not Wows fault really but the MMO market have been about Wow for too long, it will need some tough competition. Competition will force Blizz to make Wow better so everyone gets better of (Except Blizzards stockholders) once companies like Bioware start releasing their own MMOs.

The same thing happened to the FPS when Quake 2 got out, all the games looked and felt just like it until Half life showed up.

3 games or so fighting for the top spot and many smaller once under them would create a more dynamic genre where the devs actually had to think and evolve the genre, right now Blizz only needs to add more content with very little new ideas.

Even Call of Duty 5 is based off the Quake III Arena engine isn't it?

Half Life and Quake III Arena (or Quake 2) are the dominant FPS titles and I believe they still are because a lot of games run off their engines.

I played World of Warcraft for 2.5 - 3 years. And I think there's 3 things I really dislike about it.

Before I continue, I by no means hate the game, I just choose not to play it.

    1. The subscriber base - 11+ million people is a lot. And for me, it just makes me feel that when I'm playing wow I'm just "another spec of sand in the beach". But that's just me.

    2. The MMO Market - It's been over-ruled by World of Warcraft for far too long like the above poster said. Now all games are modeled around the success of World of Warcraft and everyone is too afraid to try to compete.

    3. MMO Market Cont. - One problem I have is that a lot of the MMO community was baptised by World of Warcraft and will not accept anything less than World of Warcraft. I had a friend come over the other day as I showed him some of the other MMORPGs I played, and he couldn't help but to lash out at each one because they lacked some feature that WoW had.

I'm one of the most die-hard fans of Everquest. You can see that looking at my avatar. I think there is no other game that hase been close to what EQ was, before being destroyed by $OE with PoP expansion and subsequents.

But.. I'm currently playing WOW.. and have been playing it since launch in Europe. True it has many limitations and many silly things for an ex-EQ player. However, WOW is an extremely well done MMO. It's a very very good MMO, there is no doubt about it. Extremely good.

People just bash it because they want to appear to be hardcore, and saying "WOW sucks" is the fastest way to do it. For some probably the only way.

I really liked WoW when it first came out, but now I hate it due to the fact that they dumbed down everything to the point of boredom, so that all of the zombies and monkeys out their with half a brain can play it.  Case in point, as a druid, aquatic form is now given to you via a trainer rather than having to quest for it, and let me tell you with that quest you felt like you earned it.  In addition, not that you can blame Blizzard for wanting to make a buck, but they've gone a bit overboard with the ability to change so-and-so for a price.

More importantly, the amount of children playing it has gotten out of hand.  I personally don't enjoy "paying" for a game where you are constantly being begged for money, which is the product of said dumbing down.  If that was of interest, I could just drive to the next city over and walk the streets for the day.
