Any news on it actually being a brutal grind game or what? Just another trailer, announcement and everyone flipping their lids a little too early?
Excuse us for getting excited about a long beloved IP. I swear some of you constant naggers need therapy.
The only info we have is what was at a press release in 2008 saying how it will be a different experience then FFXI but retaining the good things the players loved while getting rid of the things the players hated.
Perhaps there will be more info at the SE press conference tomorrow. For sure there will be more in the months to come. Maybe hard to believe but for FF fans that's more then enough.

Haha right. Ask a question and get a foaming at the mouth response. Typical of these boards.
Actually, the brutal grind that FFXI was known for has been mostly eliminated with major new features to the leveling system and exp. Personally, I loved the rest of the game... so its natural to be excited about their second MMORPG.
-downloads the high-def version and watches it another 10 times-
Holy crap.
This is frigging awesome.
Now... the only thing is... I hope SE stays closer to the "spirit" of FFXI (challenge, groups required for key content, etc)... but improves on aspects of it that are kinda weak in FFXI.
Other than that...
Holy crap.
The thing I love most about FFXI is the grouping.
Most MMO's I play now feel like graphically downgraded versions of console action games. Yes grouping is always an option, but it seems like I'm the only one ever LFG.
Either way, Square has an almost flawless track record in my opinion, so I'm expecting a very high quality game.
Things I hope they keep:
- heavy focus on grouping/community
- job system (brilliant)
- depth of story
- depth of character development
- character involvement in cut-scenes, etc.
- all the little naunces in the game... the importance of elements, etc
- the interesting and even confusing environments
- add a more "vertical axis" element to the gameplay... perhaps jumping and/or climbing.
- interesting boss encounters
Things I hope they improve:
- controls for non-gamepad/console players; I don't have a problem with the keyboard, personally.. but I think it would be a huge help for those who do.
- eliminate the pointlessly long waits for some quests; waiting 'til after Japanese midnight, etc.
- make quests a bit more "worthwhile" to do... so people will actually do them
- improve collision detection in some areas, like when you're riding on a 8' tall chocobo and can't run over a 3" rise in the ground
- more options for character customization both at creation and afterward
- don't "anchor" the game's tech exclusively on the PS3, so that graphics enhancements can be made to PC, even beyond what the PS3 can handle when it (inevitably) becomes outdated.
- more "use" out of environments, beyond merely being places you pass through to get somewhere else
- seamless world with more natural transitions between areas would be great
Hmm.. can't think of anything else atm...

I will finally be able to die ounce FF14 Online is released...lol, i think iam gonna pull a cartman and freeze myself until it is released. Aion has been a polarizing game for me, everyone says its great but i can never understand why beyound the graphical sweetness. I still might try it but its gonna be a battle between SW:TOR, FF14, and possible Moral Online that steals my heart. My bet is on FF14.
Yeah, that worked well for Eric...
Anyways, Ill keep my eyes open for it also but I really need more info before deciding if it is a game for me or not.

And in another light...
It's that "brutal grind" that many people like(d) about FFXI.
What might be "tedious" or "annoying" to someone could be entertaining to someone else.

so true about the grouping system, it wouldnt be right without it to be honest. I know alot of people want to be able to solo to their hearts content but final fantasy's combat has never been about one person party experiences
As long as they have beastmaster again or one job that CAN solo it's all dandy. :P
As long as I can play a Dragoon on release I'll be happy.
Eh, even if I have to level one toon up first I'm sure I'll still be happy, just not as happy.
Yeah I wonder what all you can be at release and what jobs you can unlock, if they go with that kind of thing.
Dragoon was one of my favorite classes... I enjoyed plain old Black Mage as well too. I had a Taru before but depending on what Races and jobs they have will decide what kind of character i'll make. Man I can't stop thinking about this game, I have so many questions to ask.
all I can say is "the GD! bastards.... the GD! bastards". I was planning for SE's new MMO to be huge. I've talked about it a few times here, and actually posted something about the PS3 release, then possible later release on 360... For those who are still confused (and I can't understand how they are, because others have clarified it perfectly), it was always intended for PC release. The "surprise" was that SE decided to release only on PS3, though it's likely the game will appear on 360 at some point in the future. Regardless, the big question I have is if they are going to allow character ports or some type of bonus for having played/achieved certain things in XI. If so, I'm screwed (I quit the game awhile back because of a fight with a RL friend in game and the fact that I simply wasn't playing it that often and couldn't justify paying for something I wasn't playing). Still, without a doubt, FFXI was a deep game with a huge amount of content. It's grindy, and the grouping woes made it difficult, but that's what I loved about it. I'm just wondering if anybody has seen anything about if they are planning on doing anything for current XI players. If so, I'd toy with the idea of getting my character reinstated (if possible) and then paying to change servers (to avoid the ex-RL friend). I'm kinda surprised by how everybody is creaming their pants for this game. Sure, it looks awesome and will be spectacular, but it's like nobody could see this coming. Come on people, it's been in dev for several years by one of the premiere gaming houses in the business. What's more, they've had an awesome revenue stream from the current flagship (XI) and have learned tons from their previous errors (we should hope). Damn them, though. Here I thought I was going to have a bit of life. No longer. <(;-.-)>
*starts crying* I thought I was the only one.........*sniffle* 5 games later.....I might have found the one

SE has gotten much better about being punctual, so they said 2010, thats next year, i will probably say fall next year, all speculation of course
You would be making an intelligent guess,as i would bet near Christmas time as well. The other option is a HASTE[:D ffxi spirit already] move towards hitting all the kids when they are out of school for summer break.
My gut tells me however, that if this game is to be complete and a large game,it would have to be near the end of 2010.I find 2010 to be a sort of fast release really, unless they have already been working on this game for some time.I know they originally rushed out FFXI in JPN on the whim that their slow and tough grind would keep the players busy until level 50.they then added tons of new content as the game moved along in years,i am guessing they will do the same again.FFXi was a game that just speed leveling got you nowhere, especially in the beginning, there was no internet or answers posted for you to make things easy,FFXI was a VERY hard game on release.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

End of 2010 would not be a surprise at all. But bear in mind they first announced this in 2005 and I don't they've disclosed how long they've been working on it prior to that. So generally it takes 5 years to make an mmo, it's right on time. ^_^
It's supposed to release in Japan and NA at the same time, hopefully that remains true.
Some of my favorite moments came from groups of mixed English and Japanese speaking players, struggling to use the translator system to communicate. The feeling of successful teamwork is like nothing else i've experienced in an MMORPG. It'll be nice to have everyone starting off from the same place this time.
As long as FFXIV goes after the FFXI fans the game will be around for a long long time, just like FFXI is.
If SE jumps ship and tries to cut into WoW's pocket then the game will just be a flash in the pan. It is not possible to please both the WoW fans and the FFXI fans in one game, because they like complete oppisite elements. I think it will be remakably similar to what FFXI is. I just dont see them jumping ship after how succesfull FFXI has been for them. If you despised FFXI then most likely your going to hate FFXIV as well. But never fear Blizzard is also working on a new MMO. Hopefully we will know more tomorrow about FFXVI, and not just get more teasers.
EDIT: BTW how long does it take MMORPG.com to give us our own board?

I don't see this at all. Here's why: Square Enix followed the Everquest model for FFXI. I have seen someone mention, but can't remember who or where for the life of me, that FF14's team met with the Everquest 2 to brainstorm and apparently they took a few pointers from them. So it's safe to say FF14 will be closer to Eq2 as FFXi is to EQ and therefore somewhat similar to WoW since Eq2 remodeled and took pointers from WoW....
In conclusion, this should be a welcome change from FFXI's antiquated formula, don't mistake that to mean it's going to be I Win Button though. I still think it will be heavily group oriented.

Since when? FFXIII was originally slated for a December 2008 release.. Then December 2009, now isn't it Spring 2010?
Well, another game to go onto my "MMOs to play" list...
But I'm definitely moving this to the top 3 watch list (depending on what else is confirmed releasing in 2010 that I want to play..).
I'll definitely try to start the game early this time (I didn't do that for FFXI, and got pretty much stucked when I play... )
Hmm... now I'm thinking of going back to FFXI just for the fun of it...
Current MMO: FFXIV:ARR
Past MMO: Way too many (P2P and F2P)
The game has already been in development for four years, I'll be surprised if it's not out by Spring of next year.
