I'm sure WAR wanted to aim higher, as well as Age of Conan, but they didn't succeed. SE aimed lower and got what they wanted. In the case of WAR and AoC though, they did several things wrong IMO. They released info too early, had to delay things and couldn't keep all of their promises. Also all the delays caused the hype to become too big.. Just 1 year to release means that the game is quite finished by this point (after 5 years of developing), so no delays. I only wish that it won't be as unpolished as other MMO's that come out, but we'll see about that.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
Cant wait now! I remember when i was still too young to get into FFXI because i didnt have a credit card etc and when i tried it, i personally felt it was a bit outdated (for the PC anyway) and i think now with the technology that we have and the capabilities of the PS3/PC nowadays this is going to be huge.
I will for sure to have a look, cant wait till we get info regarding when it is, story, gameplay etc etc etc etc!!! lol.
So what will happen to FFXI? Will FFXIV be that different and aim at a different market so they can still have FFXI? or will they not really "close" FFXI but slowly gain the population from FFXI to FFXIV.
Saying that, this will drive PS3 sales even further, also it being on PC - i will decide when we all get more detail on how the mechanics will work. I never really enjoyed MMOs on consoles (but that might change).
Also, i reckon after the PS3/PC release, a 360 game will be in production aswell i reckon to satisfy all members of the community.
With a 2010 release they must of been working on it for quite some time (this the rapture rumor that has been around for a long time? i dunno?)
I say end of 2010 - providing everything goes according to plan - we have seen developers delay releases of their MMOs (champions online) - what i dont mind because i will have PLENTY of games to keep me busy till then - heres a list of games i will be keeping myself busy with.
Starcraft 2
FF13
FF13 vs
Diablo 3? (Prob end of 2010)
Champions Online
SWTOR? (prob end of 2010 - will be a huge battle if those two mmos came out a the same time...might have to play both!)
and more
So i can wait and even though we KNOW its coming, i will not try and get into the hype...TRYY!!!!!! lol so things will be cool.

Since 2005 afaik. They haven't leaked out Any info about it though, even when asked multiple times haha.
Funny thing is, I downloaded the HD models of Windurst mog house like a week ago, thinking how beautiful the game would be with upgraded graphics like in my moggy.. but knew that it'd be too much work to do to upgrade the whole game to be like that. Now it doesn't matter though, FFXIV is just what I needed!
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
For me now that FF14 has been announced no MMO will quench my thirst. I think I will just overhype it and wait patiently while constructing a FF online shrine and gaming room that if my wife saw would cause a hasty divorce.
Um are gameplay details actually released anywhere?
Because I'm confused at how our forum of grumpy-faced MMO-critics can turn into starry-eyed fanboys over a trailer which is just a typical CG FF intro (which means it's good, but shows no gameplay.)

With the massive similarities to how FFXI works, and plays like from the trailer. 4 of the 5 races were present and a CG battle similar to how FFXI plays was shown with of course massive improvements. The Galka is more trimmed and overall proportioned better instead of having a massive chest and stubby little chicken legs and of course no tail anymore.{which tells me this is future Vana'diel, new continent or just changed over time!} Tarutaru not shown, but they are in the title graphics, Mithra are there, Elvan, and of course Humes don't appear to have changed much if any. I'm very excited for this...
All us rabid FFXI fanbois are assuming its going to be more along the lines of the current FFXI with all the good things we loved; heavily improved, and all the not so good things either removed or updated so they are good. Its very obvious that this is either in an entirely new world, IMO a future version of Vana'diel{considering the evolution of the Galka} or another series of continents on the other side of the FFXI Vana'diel!
Personally I think its future Vana'diel! The Crystal War; past and present conflicts from are finally resolved, a millennia or more have passed, and everything has changed!
Yeah, if it didn't look like FFXI I doubt most of us FFXI fanboys were this excited. But from what it LOOKS LIKE, we're getting an enhanced FFXI after all!
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
Ok, so a day has gone by. I have time to reflect on what a rabid fanboi I became after this news, and I've come to this conclusion: I'm pulling a Cartman too and freezing myself. I still can't wait.
I think the SE dev teams have already taken the one thing that EQ2 has that is unique in mainstream MMOs: EQ2's mentoring system. I'm sure there's other aspects that would be cool to be incorporated (I really like the guild halls and the quests you can do to earn status for your guild, to add more items/facilities to your guild hall) SE is developing for an international market, much more so then Blizzard did, and so I don't expect an exact copy of any of the big western MMOs.
I hope they have a similar class system haha, but maybe more to start with initially. I REALLY loved the FFXI job system.
They will probably add more pvp since that was missing for the most part last time, and hopefully a few more quests that require a lot of group effort.
They thing about FFXI that I liked were that groups were really fun and were also neccessary most of the time.
But the fact that when people grouped it was mostly always just a big grind just sometimes got a little boring, although the way the game played still made it the only bearable grind I've ever played
So maybe a little bit of solo gameplay added as well for when you aren't feeling social.

But if it's anything like 12 I'll have it done in a week and be heading back to sleep for a while.
I am huge FF fan and probably one of the most entertaining experiences I had with MMO's was XI since I got into it a few days after release. I loved the community based aspect of the game and I hope the keep that in place. I loved coming home from class, finishing my work, then jumping into a grind zone and talking with my usual grouping buddies. The community made the game in my opinion and I hope it makes this game as well, even if it is harder. I am not looking for an MMO like WoW were I can go 1-80 without talking to a soul. Only thing I am worried about is I have noticed in a few articles they mentioned a chance of turn based combat which would be a HUGE turn off for me for an MMO. But my gut is telling is action oriented. But all in all I cant wait for some actual content to be seen!!!
I will also be keeping an eye on Aion, especailly with their first public beta event this weekend since I got my key. As I said it will all come down to game play for me. If FF XIV is action oriented I will most likely be playing 2 MMO's come 2010. Plus I miss my DRAGOON!!!!!!!!!!
eh, a fast turn based system would be pretty fluid. 1 second turns means in a party of 5 you would get an action every 5 seconds. It would also eliminate much of the timing required for MB and skillchains.
Or mabye a combination system where players set up skillchains according to their timers and they occur at the next auto attack.
I would imagine it to be some way to make SC/MB easier to do. but a completely turn based system. no way in hell would they be stupid enough to do that.
I am wary. Has there ever been an MMOG sequal that surpassed the first one? AC versus AC2 EQ versus EQ2 DAOC versus WAR (not really a sequal but close enough) As with any big announcement, I'll ignore any and all hype until I've played the game.
I would say yes.The problem is the community, not the game. Many players cannot accept any change at all and will complain at every detail the sequel does as compared to the original game.
No question as far as i am concerned that EQ2 was MUCH better than EQ,yet so many complained everyday and even left the EQ community for WOW out of spite.I think the other problem is that far too many gamers become attached to their players and cannot accept a sequel that will empty their beloved servers and eventually end there game.People need to remember that it is just a game and time to move on or advance into the new wave of technology.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

The thing with those sequels was that they were just so different. EQ2 didn't feel much at all like the first one and AC2 was completely different. It was also horrible and shut down pretty fast lol.
EQ2 was actually a very good game, but it released at the same time as wow and if people were to even leave EQ, there was a good chance they would be heading to that game anyway. EQ2 also needed quite a bit of work in the beginning if I remember correctly, but not it is amazing.
And WAR...Ugh, I hated that game. Completely different from DAoC in my opinion and nowhere near as fun.
Hopefully this new Final Fantasy game will follow a similar formula and build upon the good things they had going for it. That would make for a sequel worth playing.
I'm excited about FFXIV. I loved FFXI but I stopped playing it about 4 years ago. I hope that FFXIV will have the same charm as it's orginal but will also bring something fresh to the table. I'm really looking forward to it. I hope there will be a free trial and works for a 1680x1050 res LOL (j/k). I do miss those fuzzy mithras =D!

Sadly, if South Park ever makes an episode related to FFXIV, my guess is that FFXIV will get trashed. But then again, what doesn't get trashed in South Park?

Oh yea, I play plenty of other games. Other than BioShock 2 though there really isn't a whole lot coming out that I'm crazy for.
On a normal cycle I'd still be playing Resident Evil 5, but it was a bit of a let down for me so I was left with nothing that I want to play. So I'm waiting for Big Daddies, Little Sisters, Adam and plasmids.

You do realize this only means for consoles right? It will be on the PC absolutely.
They are also saying this will be a world wide release in 2010, the first ever in mmo history if they can pull it off. (as far as I know)
didn't they do the same thing with FFXI ? released it for PS2 as well as PC...
