Next question, "What kind of influences from other MMOGs like World of Warcraft have there been on FFXIV
Komoto responds, "As with WOW, they're aimed at the casual user, we're aiming for more casual users. However, we don't want to make a copy of WOW, we want to be unique."

The blog I read said aimed 'more' at casual gamers, I take that as saying it will be more casual, but won't deviate into a Wow clone. I.E. more solo content, less time waiting for parties.

its more like wow than final fantasy 11 is what i gathered from it.
Yea I really think they have learned well with the implementation of their Level Sync how to make the game more approachable for shorter play sessions. I bet they will also include their FOV type books in some form for the solo player too! FFXi is definitely casual friendly nowadays but wasn't always, hopefully they'll keep the xp curve similar to how it is now as it still satisfies the difficulty most look for.
Edit: I didn't get that its more like wow than ffxi at all... I read it as they were achknowledging that people want the ability to accomplish things with limited playtime...and as you go into the interview they talk about how they will be incorporating their level sync to do this.

Maybe, maybe not, there is no way to be sure without the beta test being today. But at least you can say that SE never plays the same card twice, and personally I don't trust any other company more to not make a Wow clone.
Is everyone from this thread,
http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/2866352/Does-FFXIV-excitement-prove-players-wanted-old-school.html#2866352
going to come storming in and refute this statement? LOL....we all need to face it, the foreseeable future of MMO's will be geared more to the casula player than to the hardcore player. The huge subscription #'s of Wow are just too much for developers to resist!
I agree, and the recent article about ffxi attaining its highest sub numbers since launch recently after 7 years only furthers that statement. That being said, even with Level Sync and FOV's, reaching 75 in ffxi is still a big achievement compared to reaching max level in most other mmos with the exception of ones like lineage 2.
Not refuting so much as accepting the fact that there is no way to know, just as your statement, can't be 100% truth neither is mine. For my part I am all about the wait and see approach, if you are going to be mean about it I can leave and the hardcore soloist can have a b!tching party without me.
thats not just for mmo's either. if you have seen any of E3, most single player games are going for the casual audience too.
The impression I get is that it will be exactly like FFXI as far as difficulty and forced grouping, only with some solo / casual content tacked on as an after thought. In other words, you will still get the best progression, loot and quality content for groupers, wtih XP / Faction grinding and minimal rewards type activities for soloers.
Sure, you might be able to solo to max, unlike FFXI, but what are the chances that it will be fun AND rewarding.
With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal

What I'd like to know, is does this mean that no new developments can so much as mention WoW without fans going ape @#$%? It's pretty clear that games are going to have to appeal towards casuals if they want to survive long-term. The majority of players just don't have enough time for "hard-core" games, as most people tend to think of them.
WoW is a very influential game, it's time people faced that reality. You can bet that, at least for a while, every new MMO is going to mention it in one way or another. This doesn't automatically make these new MMOs WoW-clones.

What about the hardcore groupists? Can they have b!tch party too??!!
I don't consider myself to be in either of those camps if anyone was curious. :P I'm a soloist but I don't demand the whole game should be catered to ME lawl. I just want the option to solo while being able to have fun groups too.

Yep that pretty much sums up what I took from it. They want it to mimic what they have finally achieved with FFXI.
I dont mind solo friendly/casual friendly ( to me these are the same thing ), i just dont want an XP drop if i decide i want to grou to level. I dont understand why MMO's dont get this right, it can be both, but i hated the fact that it is counterproductive to group in most MMO. Casual does not have to be easy either. When i Hit max level i want to feel something, i dont wanna be just another number...i want other to respect my level and my accomplishments...this is the point right?

SURE !!! ^^ Let's divide up mmorpg.com into two camps, anyone got some masking tape, will put a line right down the middle of everything. ^^
It will be casual and hardcore like every mmorpg (that is IF it is a mmorpg). Either way Final Fantasy always deliver top notch games and I suspect this to be the same- the fact they stated they want it to be unique is the cream of the cake. Again if this is a mmorpg it will be one not to be missed- no matter how they develop it.
Square enix is well known for making final fantasy games very deep and hardcore.. im sure this new game wont be the exception.
Sure, there will be more solo content and casual content, but the meat of the game will be for hardcore players like ffxi and any other ff game

Absolutely.
i guess the theme with business in all mediums these days is to, walk over your old customers to get to the shiney new ones.
what do you mean if it is a mmorpg, it specifically says on the site that its a mmorpg.
Maybe, and I won't try to argue that you don't have a point, but there is an old saying that I has a point. It's: 'Adapt or perish' or 'Adapt or die', and they don't call the classic games 'old school' for no reason whatsoever.
It's like all of you are stuck on two modes.Wow, and not wow.
There is a such thing as a Grey zone, or none of the above.

I have never seen an "easy mode" Final Fantasy game yet, singleplayer or online. I doubt SquareEnix ( I still want to call them Squaresoft ) will start now.

It's easy to see why (from a business perspective) MMOG developers might prefer casual gamers to "hardcore" ones.
There's simply no benefit to prioritising the hardcore minority over the casual majority.
But that doesn't equate to "screwing over all the old customers", 'cos plenty of the old school MMOG players were just as casual 10 years ago as they are now.
