MMORPG.com starting to go downhill?

ramadinramadin Member Posts: 1,304

I really like this site, and I enjoy browsing it every day.  However, lately I seem to be noticing it going downhill due to a severe tightening on whats considered appropriate for posts.  When I first signed up here, I was like "cool, dont have to worry about bans for swearing, the occasional flame rant, or anything else", I could voice what I wanted where and when and others could as well.

Over the last few weeks though, Ive been seeing entire threads deleted while replying to them.  If you look at any hot topic thread, its likely youll find a giant red "DELETED" throughout.  Also an admin emailed me and asked me to change the word "fu*k" on my sig, which has been there for many months.

Theres also STILL the problem of posts simply disappearing when you hit the "post message" button.  (Yes I do the copy/paste thing anyway).  Or the site logs you out after like 10 minutes, often while trying to post, which is lame, I have to log in here like 5 times a day.  And whats with the "Site is performing maintenance" message?  Do they really reboot the server 10 times a day???  Ive never seen any other board have to do these things, its just all starting to wear on me.  Maybe Im all wrong, anyone else feel like this?

Heh...well played.  We expect that kind of response from an adolescent who feels as though they don’t have a grasp of their language and clarity of thought for expressing their point, and whom has to resort to ignorant cursing in a lame attempt to display emotion.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I don't like the fact that they delete every EQ2 vs. WoW thread, etc.

I understand that they don't want to clutter up the forums, but if people want to talk about it, why not let them? After all, they are likely to be the 2 biggest mmorpgs in the coming years.

The ignorant bashing of someone voicing themselves is much worse then any curse word. Curse words are around for a reason, so show distasteful feelings. If you drop something on your foot you don't just stand there or saying something like "Oh dang" You let your feelings out with a good healthy "Sh1t" or "G0d d4mn it!"

You would also hear such words coming from someone falling off a cliff, in between their bloody screams. My point? Sometimes thats how gaming and things related to gaming makes one feel.

PS. of course i didn't post the actual words, I don't want my post deleted. I feel that the only posts that should get deleted are ones that make straight attacks at another person and posts to links that cause harm to computers (viruses, spyware, etc.)

Up yours! to deletion ::::32:: (thats a middle finger in my eyes atm)

And they very well should be able to talk about it, so take it to threads that are already eq2/wow wars. There is no need to have 50+ topics on the same game-war. I don't go into the eq2 or wow forums, mainly because I'm sick of seeing all the wow will rule eq2 and vis versa when in they BOTH will do very good. But I'm sure their are plenty of war topics in each one.

I haven't seen an EQ2 vs. WoW thread in that lasted more than a day or two in months.

guys you've been noticing threads we have deleted, but there are so much more we've deleted than you think.

You may think to yourselves "Holy cow, man, you just proved my point"

    Now hear me out.

Before I got on staff I realized that mmorpg.com were deleting any future WoW vs EQ2 or EQ2 vs WoW and I noticed some posts had disappeared.

When I became staff, did I truly realize how many.  If we did not delete the WoW vs EQ2 posts and vice versa there would be literally around 10 posts in General Categories-General Discussion-The Pub/10 posts in General Categories-General Discussion-Off Topic/20 posts in WoW general discussion, and 20 posts in EQ2 general discussion. <-- and that's just the first pages alone

And by the second page of virtually every thread the dialogue breaks down into personal attact, jabs, trolling, cussing out the other's grandmother, cats sleeping with dogs, etc.  Basically it ALWAYS turns into a shouting match.  The stability of EQ2 vs WoW threads has gotten more volitile (sp) than political/religion threads.

If we didn't delete the threads you would see them everywhere.  Now correct me if I'm wrong, but about 2 months ago I clearly remembered mmorpg subscribers complaining that all they saw were this type of threads.

Also, we do delete posts where certain users are just begging a flame response.  They get nothing better in life than to sit down, log on their computer and see how many forum users they offended.  Lately, they've been using the WoW and EQ topics to fuel their unfounded hatred.

I'm involved in several other forums as well.  For the sheer amount of members we have we need to more conscious about images and words.  In a smaller forum you can get away with that; but look at the amount of people who log on all the time.

We have many 13, 14, 15,  year olds and I know I don't want to be responsible for them to log on here to find a good mmorpg and then seeing images and word inappropriate for their age. Now, I know they hear those things all the time in school, mall, with friends, movies, etc. But at least its a right step when we try to enforce a better syste, where the language barrier isn't so obtrusive.

There are cusswords on the forums but the hardcore ones, we usually discourage.  Like I said I know many forum groups that censor all form of cusswords and/or phrases

Hell, SWG official forums censored the word pokemon for months.

And I thank you for ridding them from my eyes, but I still feel there should be a place for people to voice such things. Thus my new topic I made with a poll. If we could make sure it all stays in one place, then rock on. If not... then I guess I'm waiting the skin cells on the tips of my fingers lol

    Points well taken.

    Solution:

    Stop deleteing the posts.

Put them in another section like: OMG! You said what Beotch.

    No post counts allowed.

Put an age restriction of 18 -21

Let it fill with crap and if you wanna read, you can read it.

    Censorship sucks for everyone!

Getting the tons of WoW vs. EQ2 threads out of the general discussion, WoW, and EQ2 boards was a good thing.  Those kinds of threads were probably why I stopped reading these boards a month or two ago.  However, I do think the WoW vs. EQ2 debate deserves a place on the forums somewhere, maybe they should get a seperate forum.  If it was in it's own confined little area then it wouldn't annoy anyone else and still allow people to bitch about which game will "win".

Displeasure? I wouldn't say that. Obviously the many posters discussing it find pleasure in posting it, and viewers taking the interest to read and respond. Not all contrevery is bad, it's good to talk and get it out of your system. Express your own oppinion, but with the threads getting deleted by the minute, we don't even have time to think.

Oh yeah I forgot to say.

I don't think that mmorpg.com is going downhill, especially since I'm going to win an EQ2 Beta slot. Right.

    Cheers.

Well no ones addressed the other issues I brought up, aside from deleting EQ2 vs WoW posts...

I remember the days when you had to email an admin to get them to intervene in a thread.  Now its so badly micromanaged, that no one can get a word in edge wise before its deleted or removed.  WTF is up with all the censorship?  We cant say the F word anymore either.  This site is becoming gay.

Why do you need to swear so much? Sorry, I side with mods on this one. I used to run a very active forum and I would get bashed for deleted posts and censoring posts but it is all in the name of keeping a clean and productive forum. I'm sorry but I don't see the forum as a place to make stupid comments that have no meaning whatsoever and swear left and right because your a disgruntled person. As for deleting posts....well there are tons of these topics. Like Enigma said most break down into flaming and trolling which has no place here. Make your own forums for just flames and trolls but I personally don't like having to sift through the different threads to see which ones are worth reading or not.

Again on the swearing...you can force yourself to not type swear words. It isn't hard. You can say them or whatever but why you need to type them to show emotion when it doesn't even do that I can't understand. I swear a lot IRL but when I'm online in games and on forums I am respectful to those around me who may not want to see my swearing.

I agree with swearing getting nerfed as well...

I am not against swearing and do it ALL the time, but not in forums like this.

I do it where I know who is going to hear it (or read it in this case) and I know the location is appropriate for it. Sure, there are some that feel it is never appropriate and others who feel it is always appropriate. But, generally, in a setting like this, you really should curb it, not knowing who is going to be reading it.

This is not www.AdultMMORPG.com or www.MMORPGOver18.com. This site is based on games, and kids play games. Sure, kids may use swear workds too, but many do not, or are not supposed to and they should be free to visit MMORPG.Com without being inundated with them.

  • ramadinramadin Member Posts: 1,304

I dont need to swear, i dont usually swear, on the rare occasion that I feel the need to swear it would be nice not to have to be micromanaged.

The point is why do you have to swear here? I can almost never see a reason to do it on a forum where people who should not have to put up with it need to read it. I know if I had a kid I wouldn't want them to goto a harmless site like this and get into the habit of swearing. Even if they pick it up elsewhere this will be on place I know they won't be influenced in that manner.

    Come on, ramadin.

You're honestly upset because you cant say the F Bomb here? This site is now labeled "gay" because we wont let people use the F word?

That's a little shallow if you ask me.  Besides, be more creative if you're pissed about something.  When I'm around people I get annoyed when they drop the F bomb like it's an  adjective, noun, verb, adverb, pronoun, metaphore, similie, etc. It gives me the expression that they're not too bright because they cannot think of another word to describe their frustrations.

I'm not saying you are not bright for saying the F word. I'm saying don't think a forum is gay because we dont like people dropping the F bombs here.  The forum isn't micromanaged either.  Browse around here.  You'll see threads where people argue "why don't the staff lock this already?!?!?!" and then we see your comment  that we do too much moderation. Its like hell if we do, hell if we dont.

If someone flames someone, If someone posts a link to their site for advertisement purposes, If someone goes into a WoW site and says WoW sucks EQ2 is better, or vice versa you're going to see deleted posts.

It's just the facts of life here.  If this site wasn't moderated like it is, it will easily become a battle.net forum site and I know many people here do not want that.

Censorship?? This isn't a public place, my understanding is that censorship , Constitutionally wise is only protected in a public place not a private site like this one. I may be wrong though...I have been before. If MMORPG.com wants to delete a post because they feel it is inappropriate thats their right on their private site. Afterall we don't pay for our subscription here...My opinion on the subject.

That's exactly what I mean. WoW vs. EQ2 is what alot of people want to talk about, and we can't even have 1 or 2 threads about them?

There is a SWG vs. FFXI thread on the front page right now.. why have the double-standard?

You know what I've noticed it seems like not alot gets deleted on the weekends, I don't know why maybe they take them off. I've seen VS. threads get positivly long on the weekends and disappear on Monday...hmmm...I'm not saying test the theory, don't want to get someone in trouble. But interesting to say the least. Good point for now though.

EDIT: I looked at the thread you were talking about and it really isn't as bad as ssome of the WoW vs. EQ2 threads get...seems objective.

I dont understand how in this day and age a four letter word can upset people, merely being a word.

Seems sort of foolish to believe that any word, written or spoken can contain power or be obscene. Much like when people write a word like 'd*g' thinking that by blocking a single vowel or letter will make the word accepted and once again unfoul. I love how illogical people really are.

Censorship has nothing to do with the a constitution. What the heck are you talking about.  Censorship is blocking out things that you don't want others to see, plain and simple.  If MMORPG wants to delete a post go for it. Thats their choice.  Controling their boards thats their business too.  This thread is one huge troll.

I think what the f bomb guys are saying is that they want a place on this site to say it.

BTW MMORPG is making money from us ranting, I guess from advertising and maybe some sort of tracking.

Customer demand, or they may go away to another forum. I myself don't want to drop the F bomb or get into a EQ WoW debate.  So I don't start them on purpose. (Once I did by accident and it got deleted right away, I felt pretty bad about that my apologies Staff).

Anyways give them a place to gather, Please then this thread can end also.
