AION won't kill WoW. WoW will slowly die as the next gen. MMO's come out (including Blizzards new one). AION is a great game and will hold it's own in the world of MMO's . We will have so many choices in the near future; GW2, SWToR, STO, etc. that hopefully everyone will find their niche and be happy. I play games cause they are fun....AION, for me, is fun.
I think the real "WoW killer" will be patience and time. Video games, no matter how fun, eventually become obsolete and irrelevant. Anyone who thinks WoW is immune to this eventuality is fooling himself.
While I have no real interest in Aion, I do think it will cause a considerable drop in the WoW's Asian market. I think it could easily be responsible for the loss of a several million "active" WoW accounts. I think WoW will still maintain a very strong hold on the Western MMO market for a few more years. I'd expect it to be in a serious state of decline by 2011 some time. With the flood of shiny new Asian grinders taking most of that market, and a couple of new big name Western MMOs releasing in that time, I expect WoW to down to a million or so die hard subs in a couple of years.
Could Aion grab a lot of Chinese users from WOW? Probably.
Will that affect the bulk of WOW's profit? No.
Will Aion attract US and European players? Probably not. Its beautiful, but I thought L2 was beautiful and it was the shortest sub I ever had to an MMO. The Asian MMO mindset is simply different than the Western one. I would shoot myself in the head before playing a game that required so much grinding.
The WOW killer will be the next blizzard MMO - they are the only company who consistently makes top notch games in the West. Wish it was different...
It all started with a lantern, a sword, and a trap door...
After reading threads and news on this site for years i felt i had to open a forum account to add my thoughts on this topic... Pretty much agree with all warpiglet says.. Aion aint gonna be a wow killer but will contribute towards Blizz's ever declining bottom line of the cash cow that is wow. I quit wow 2 months ago after playing since US and EU beta.. All the original guys who i raided with have now quit also and AION along with SWTOR are the only 2 games on the horizon that have got me excited again. Are blizzard quoting frozen accounts in their numbers? HeHe I quit the week before Ulduar and i've never been a hardcore raider but this was the first time i had Full up to date Tier armor before a big content update.. Wow i hear you say.. Full T7 valorous! :-) The month previous all i did was run MC or BWL with 4 or 5 of us.. maybe i was subconciously saying good bye to the game, re -running all the old dungeons where as a 40 man raiding guild, online and RL friendships were forged and still friends to this day. TBC was kinda ok and WOTLK is lets face it not a challenge anymore. I just pre ordered Aion Collectors Edition for me and a friend and don't really care if Aion is Open world PVP cos thats where i started my wow career, on a pvp server before Organised pvp came along and spolied it but thats another story :-) Ta
No offense mate but if you followed this site for years and this was your 1st post..could you not have posted the same thing months if not years ago,you add nothing to the topic other than yout thoughts on WoW and how you are burned out by it.
all of which tbh has nothing to do with Aion and more to do with your frame of mind.
His post has everything to do with this thread and AION, yours however has nothing to do with AION or this thread. You are basically just harassing this poster. I followed this site for years yet AION is the first forum i am posting in. You know why? Because like the the poster you are badmouthing this is the first game here that interests me.
Harass me if you don't like the tone and opinion I brought to this thread.
Is it the fact that I Warpiglet, wiped the floor with all you WoW fans and this post happens to support and bring credibility to my arguments of where WoW has gone the last few years?
I just would like any player who is sitting on the fence playing WoW not thinking there is a real alternative to seriously consider playing AION. Do your research, watch the AION videos on youtube and play the open beta when it happens. There will be many friendly, highly skilled pvpve players so get in on the ground floor with some of the best guilds a mmo can offer. A real guild is like family, experience that in a mmo.
Wow Killer is a silly title for this. I have no idea where people get the mind set that AION is a grind. AION IS NOT A GRIND. The time I have spent playing this game on the Chinese server I find it quite fluid and quick, when the quest says collect 6 of these from so in so mob you are not killing 45 mobs (WoW), you kill like 8 (AION).
If I have 11 customers and 4 of them goto another supplier i'd say that effects my profits.
The only support for your argument that Asians prefer the grind type mmo's is the fact that WoW has 5 million Chinese subs.
Been playing WoW since release. The raids now are better then ever (aside from Naxx). Don't say they are "for kids" until you've killed Algalon (which I doubt). Aion will not kill WoW.
We had heroic Ulduar cleared 2 and a half weeks after it was released, wow raids have been greatly simplified from the early game. Old wow, you were not pugging BWL the day it was released were you? Blizzard has made raiding too simple for the old schoolers who PREFER to earn the right to raid. It has been simplified to allow the children to raid. Which is fine imo, to each their own.
They practically give the gear needed to raid away, I assume that is what you refer to as "raids are better then ever". Blizzard is giving away the right to raid rather then making people earn the right. that explains why decent tanks are hard to find. Every kid gets the freebie gear and slaps it on and thinks they are a real tank.
Aion reminds me of the old WoW, where you have to fight and earn your keep.
Everyone I know who was in WoW from the very begining would prefer the old 40 man raids, however the ones who were never part of that (40 man raids that is) think its great as it is. There was a day where you would stand in ironforge with pride wearing your might and wrath armor, now there is no pride because the top end gear is a dime a dozen.
Please. Old WoW raids were terrible and you know it. Those warm fuzzy feelings you get thinking about it are nostalgia. That is all. Tell me you'd prefer to wipe to the suppression room in BWL rather then have fun trying hard modes on bosses.
And as far as clearing heroic Ulduar does that include Algalon? Hard mode anything? Seriously. Standing around in a city being proud of your armor? Strictly epeen stroking Sorry, I have been guilty of it in the past, but dont pretend like it makes the game any better.
I guess I forgot it was supposed to be a game.. I'll go back to farming for hours to raid fully buffed yeah... right.

Shhh dont tell them its not a grind i dont know about you but i dont want a bunch of tards playing with me. All jokes aside people call it a grind because they have to work for something and invest time in it. Therefor if its not handed to you its a grind.
When WoW posted its subs, so many would rage and say chinese subs don't count, so why do they count now?
Honestly why do people care about who is gonna play Aion or not?
People have fun with WoW, why does it need to die? I mean seriously because some don't like the game it should be taken away and shutdown from those who still enjoy it?

FYI, there was a guild that cleared heroic Ulduar in 37 min upon it being released http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=16365827482&sid=1, that fact says alot for the quality of that instance dont you think? It's a joke imo. Old WoW was the best, the world pvp, the fact you worked for your gear. I have a feeling you were maybe a tad lazy to work for your epics, thus you like the new WoW that hands them to you along with the reminder your next months bill is due. AION is the way to go.
Test realms much? oh yes the number one guild in the world atm cleared Ulduar quickly... shocking.
and as far as lazy I enjoyed my Claw of Chromag and T2 when I had it, doesn't mean the game was any better or I was a super hero. All it meant was someone had a lot of free time. No more coordination was required for vanilla bosses then is now aside from old Naxx.
Wow cannot be killed.....it is the Chuck Norris of MMO's.
WoW and Chuck Norris will die of the same thing... Old Age.
Space Ghost willing, Chuck will outlast WoW.
when Chuck Norris plays WoW the bosses meet him at the instance entrance and give him their purples. So Blizzard made WOTLK so the bosses will meet everyone at the entrance and give them purples just to be fair. I'm sure Chuck likes AION better imo.
Blizzard is not going to pull out of china. They might have a lot of hassles to deal with, but they are not pulling out of there. It wouldn't be smart, business-wise. Also, that company sounds like a douche.
When WoW posted its subs, so many would rage and say chinese subs don't count, so why do they count now? Honestly why do people care about who is gonna play Aion or not? I agree with you whole heartedly, if you like WoW by all means stay with it. However I do take exception when some WoW people (its highly probable that Blizzard is sending raiding parties here to try to discredit this game) come to this forum and outright crap on this game.
If you were the head of Blizzard and seen a mmo coming up that could even take 10% of your market, do you not think you would do everything in your power to reduce the damage? The first front would be sending trolls to the said mmo's forums.
Ok I have been playing MMO's for the last 10 years, about their true emergence into the world of Online play. I played WoW for nearly 4 years. The reasons people are fed up with the games, is mainly due to class balance issues, and the ease of play. Everythign real WoW veterans played, acheived and worked for, was taken away when attunments went out the window. Every tuesday WoW is nearly a new game. I mean seriously what class is exactly the same as when it launched? they constantly have to mess with the mechanics and they really do nothing to help the games attractiveness. Lich king was popular, because Arthas is oen fo the favored characters from WarCraft, and the WoW vets wanted to see new content. Seriously though, people are already doen with the content, and have been since 2 weeks after launch.
Blizzard, is pulling out of China, due to China's new policy for WoW and other MMO's, and the LawSuit yes they will lose a ton of subs, but they Do not have 11 million people playing, anymore, despite what numbers are "posted". being a game developer my self, that is 100% pure marketing strategy, millions playing yes, 11 million at this time, no.
Aion started in Asia, 6 months posted 3.5 million subs, WoW did not boast those numbers so quickly. The reason Aion is going to be a success, is its the first Korean/Asian based MMO that is being completely localized with each region in mind. They know what American MMO players want and like, as well as the players aroudn the world. So they bring elements that make Korean MMO's huge, and add in flavorful elements from successful games over here. The game is gorgeous, the combat is fun and looks spectacular. People say its alot like WoW but after being in game myself, it just feels liek a little different styled MMO, that really has nothign to do with WoW. The same comparison could be said about EverQuest and WoW...
While I can not stand WoW any longer, the following reminds me of EQ, you have alot of time wrapped up into a toon or 2 and you just cant walk away, people get attached. Face WoW is not even the best game out there, it was marketed well, with easy system specs, well I forsee in the forst year of release Aion will be about 5 million plus subs. if it can keep end game interest, let casual players not fall too far behind, then yes, we may have a new standard in MMO's. a WoW killer, well that depends on where the subs coem from, if they coem from current WoW players, then yes it will suffer, however if it is from past WoW players like myself, than maybe there will be a happy co-existance. I played Aion all weekend, it is fairly well polished for a game that was so quickly localized.
In the end who cares what is better, people will play what they are comfortable with playing and its their 15 bucks a month to do so, just find a game you like and have fun.

No it wont if you think otherwise your just lieing to yourself.. Will ppl leave wow yes.. will it kill the game NO.
+aion is nothing more then pretty graphics and a flight system thats limited.
God I hope not. I hope WoW lasts for ever and keeps all those childish asshoels locked in their perfect game. I don't want them in AION.
QFE long live WOW keep the kiddies locked in there and leave real MMO's for those who where out of nappy's when Ultima hit
Well, is logical that a grinder game eventually will be defeated by another grinder game.
