Oh yes. But if you're subcribed to DDO US, you will be invited to closed beta before others. So, one could say, you'll have that Mod 9 you're waiting for plus knowlegde about "new DDO" before all players over the world. You will, to some degree, help to create this new F2P mmo model .
'All players over the world"? Rofl, yeah - all few thousand that are left.
As for the beta test - think about this. They are taking the same game, charging people to beta test not a new game but the same game with the selling of all the little pieces??? WTF? What kind of scam is this - pay to test the same thing you paid for the last year so we can relaunch in the summer with minimal additions. It doesn't even make sense, it is almost laughable but given how brainwashed Turbine fans seem to be I bet quite a few of the remianing few thousand will go along with it meaning they will pay to develop Turbine's new RMT system so they can go build their fairy potter rmt game or LotRO xbox game. Meanwhile, DDO is going to be just as near death as ever and likely get even less real attention than ever (of course if you consider item malls and systems to make you play to log in to your favorite character content than DDO is really getting a bunch of new content you can 'play'.
So let me get this straight, now people will be paying more, for less? Don't think you are going to get more updates than in the past. This move is the final death rattle. If it fails to bring in a new bump to DDO (and it will fail, btw) they have no other option but to shut off the development entirely. Although looking at the past 9 months you could easily suspect that have already done this.
Still no Mod 9, huh?
What a crock.
Oh no. This will almost for certain make player base larger. That will turn into more income - we all DDO players know that once you're hooked, competition (other MMO games) is lacking.
And you can stay subscribed like before, but - in my own humble opinion, with experience with F2P games now - they will get more cash which may result in more quests.
Now, as quests will be available to buy, it will the best thing Turbine can do to get more cash - more quality content could become a priority for one simple reason... People don't want to buy crap, right?
So, either Turbine provides good content and people are paying, or they will sink . What could motivate them better, hehe.
Actually Sarr not all DDO players did get hooked. See if DDO had hooked that many people who have tried it, they would not have gone the Free to Play route. There has to come a time where even you see that DDO is and has been for awhile in trouble and this is their chance to save it. This move also puts the lie to the theory Turbine was happy with DDOs niche status.
F2P games are not known for great content, if they were they would be charging you monthly. This may end up a good move, but judging from the quality of other F2P and the gamers they tend to attract, DDO is going to be a sad place for long time players as a community. General chat is going to be a disaster.
What could motivate them more? How about continuing the dev cycles they have promised in the past? How about adding the things they said that kept people subscribed? Do you really think they are going to try harder now that DDO is F2P?

I'm actually excited about this announcement, i'm not a subscriber but i signed up for the Beta anyways, the only thing i'm ticked off about is that they are taking warforged away from the F2Ps, but you can purchase the race, so if it isn't to bad i can make my warforged rogue later on down the line. I think this will bring more people into the game, since it seems you can play most of the main line areas and go to lvl cap (unless they say something different). It might not save the game, but it will give it a bit of a population boost from the people who need a game to play during the summer, or from their main subscription games.
Population increase means nothing unless it comes along with a profit increase.

I have been saying that vast and mysterious and super secret would be nothing but rebranding or other marketing BS and that is now show to be 100% true. DDO is now just a testbed for an RMT model Turbine hopes to use in other games, be it Harry Potter or LotrO or whatever - this DDO Unlimited BS is not going to grow DDO and I doubt seriously Turbine even thinks it will. If anything they figure they can maybe get a bit more revenue out of the existing folks or keep whatever cash coming in they need to pay for this testbed.
If Turbine were so quick to shut down Asheron's Call 2 then why are they keeping Dungeons & Dragons Online alive?

First LOTRO would not work on an Xbox.
Second they have directly, with no minced words said that LOTRO will not get RMT, and it is not going to Xbox.
DDO is the likely candidate for the console port, even more now as it has down loadable content, and its control scheme would work with an Xbox. With the main client being free now, its the logical choice. That is, if you use logic.
But keep on trying to paint Turbine as some evil entity out to punish all players. This line of thinking has always been true.

If Turbine were so quick to shut down Asheron's Call 2 then why are they keeping Dungeons & Dragons Online alive?
It is being turned in to a paid testbed for their RMT system, plain and simple. All this DDO unlimited BS is not about saving DDO, growing DDO, or anything about DDO - it is about exploiting the remaining suckers in DDO to test their RMT system whether it is for lotRO or Harry Potter or whatever. DDO is dead plain and simple - they are just trying to find a way to get a few more drops of blood from the stone.
As for what I was saying before on the clear scam of this whole thing look at this from the IGN propoganda:
"The game, set to launch this summer, will be renamed D&D Online: Eberron Unlimited (or simply DDO Unlimited). Available as a digital upgrade to existing subscribers, newcomers will be able to download and start playing the game for free. A new DDO store, instantly accessible anywhere within the game itself, will sell equipment, new adventures, added character content (including the brand new monk class), hirelings and a host of other things. All the new items are loaded within the client, so once a player purchases an item, it's immediately available."
You mean the brand new monk class that has been part of the game for months? Yeah, nothing bogus about that claim. This is nto a new game, there is no need to test jack shit - this is just a way to use what was dead or dying to test the new RMT systems.
"The new system may also smooth over a few of the MMO's design issues. Since leaving a dungeon early to resupply results in an XP hit, players can now purchase new arrows and potions (and even resurrection tokens) inside the dungeons. Solo-minded players can more easily take on tougher challenges by purchasing a full party's worth of retainers"
I loved this part from IGN - yeah, this is about improving the game not trying to get blood from a stone. They are simply trying to find a way to make more money from the existing miserably small player base and/or to test their RMT system, I would bet about anything that once the RMT system is fully in place and the game they are testing it for is all set DDO will be closed down, if not sooner.

I don't think any MMO would work on a console but clearly Turbine is working on as much be it DDO (an obviously failed game that is over 3 years old - not exactly something you want to toss new money at in a new venue unproven for even a so called MMO). LotRO could easily be dumbed down for the console - it is slow and stagnate hotbar combat, who says the console clients play the same full game on servers with the PC players. Harry Potter - good candidate but the many things I have read has been clear that the port is for an exisitng game.
As for Turbine, I do not think they are evil. I think they are like any company should be, interested in profit. What I dislike about turbine is that they clearly will lie outright to customers if they figure they will lose less people for telling the lie than they do for spreading the false information, I don't respect companies like that (like SoE, EA, and others).

That's why DDO will still charge monthly if you wish to. They're giving you hybrid - either you subscribe, use F2P or pay via RMT.
And yes, I think if it becomes success (and it's simply the best F2P game even now - I play MANY games), it will benefit the game and more devs will be moved here or hired. If you can get more cash - which you agreed Turbine wants of DDO, wants more players - you will do what it takes to get it.
Like someone said here, sub-only model wasn't good for DDO ever. And never will. This is a game naturally made to be such hybrid in my opinion. And it's good they did it now, instead of closing DDO - they could do it and bury great DDO systems while doing that. If they do such thing, this means they put a lot of investment on business side and on many other sides. Companies want to succeed and Turbine made effort to succeed. All DDO players who play now and played some time, know this game was always a hidden gem, mostly suffering small player numbers. Turbine found a way to change it - and all I can do is to wish them luck ; ).
That not all players get hooked... right, because this game is different : ). I've seen many people not getting hooked, including my friends. Most of the time they had subs to other MMO(s) and trial was not enough to "switch" (especially from WoW). At the same time, they said they would play DDO more if it was cheaper - so they could afford 2 games. So if gets F2P... it's even better for the game.
I, by myself , have had 6 or more DDO trials before I saw mid-level content. Soloing back then was pain in ass, and I wasn't "brave" enough to try so "advanced" game in groups. I thought: "Heck, I'm going to be the worst of them! They're probably all vets by now!". Then, somehow I got into grouping, and was amazed... found money I didn't know I had and stayed hooked up to now.
And Agt.Smith:
No, it's not just old game. Even Mod 9 notes were changing a lot (in my opinion, I know, you don't agree). DDO devs on ddo.com say that Mod 9 is just a fraction of what "new DDO" will be, so I don't think you're right. Players will see it in beta, and I will do my best to be part of beta myself.
Of course, I know you won't change your mind. I won't try to change it. You won't change my mind - only thing you do is speculating it _will_ be exactly all the same. No facts to prove it nor deny it, if you think all devs do is lie players...
So no point in arguing Agt.Smith. We won't make each other change his mind.

With a change to the system, such as content gates for purchased module, and the addition of an item store, there is lots to test. This ALSO included the mod 9 and the 12 NEW DUNGEONS and a NEW CLASS, that the IGN article mistakenly thought was a monk.

Had a chance to let the F2P move sink in and to be honest (apart from us EU people being left out) I love it. DDO is such a group focused game it needs people, more groups, more fun and a nice upward spiral. Even a bone to those people who want to solo with NPCs.
Plus is nice to see some new faces and some old ones in what had become a sadly troll infested forum.
1. people can try a big chunk of the game for free
2. If people cant afford to keep up their sub for a period of time they can still play
number 1 leads to many more people trying out the game than they normally would and leads to more subs. Number 2 leads to more subs just like EvE in a certain sense as if you run out of cash for some reason you can still play and remain somewhat compedetive (if that is your goal).
I will definately be trying this game out when this is released and i look forward to crunching the numbers to see how much i would need to pay to upgrade my free account with all the stuff i want.

Because in the time between then and now the F2P has shown itself to be a potentially viable market and a possible way to make DDO profitable. I think had the F2P market shown promise at that time AC2 may have become F2P as well.

How does it make sense logically to take a game that has failed as a P2P and spend the money to port it to console? I fail to see the logic in spending more money on a game that has failed to make money so far.
So much for your theory of "Exploiting the existing playerbase". They also stack and carry over month to month.
Catch the IGN info that you will be able to RMT a resurrection in a dungeon? Sure, DEVs won't make dying much more frequent to push RMT sales. They would never exploit player that way. Nor would they further foul the Monty Haul loot tables just to get people to RMT something useful form an hours play, nah - never.
Originally posted by Sarr So no point in arguing Agt.Smith. We won't make each other change his mind.
No, you won't change the facts and the facts are that this change is all about marketing and testing Turbine's RMT system and little about a dead MMO (and let's face it, if you go from sub based to free you are officially dead/failed). Give them credit, I am shocked they made it three years - but that is more a testament to the loyal few made up the game's base than anything Turbine did.

Tons of reasons. The controls would work on a controller. The distributions on Live or the PS3 store would reach potentially millions of players, those players are already accustomed to buying things ala-cart. No subscription fees. Targeted hardware.

More people have PCs, this game already had the potential to reach millions and failed to do so. Posting over is not cheap and DDO has not shown the wide appeal that would be needed to make a port worth the investment. I think the as yet unmade Harry Potter MMO gets the port over. Not to mention while the combat fits a controller quite well the rest of the UI is not so controller friendly. I use like 8 of my hot bars and moving to click on them with a controller is not as easy as a mouse.

If you believe Turbine, and I do not, they have said they are working on a port of one of their games to the xbox - that leaves LotRO or DDO and since this RMT scam test thing is obviously what they had in mind that leaves LotRO for the xBox. But, again, I don't believe much of waht Tubine says so who knows. But I would bet good money it is much more likely than you might think.

So much for your theory of "Exploiting the existing playerbase". They also stack and carry over month to month.

Plus is nice to see some new faces and some old ones in what had become a sadly troll infested forum.
bottom line is :
1. people can try a big chunk of the game for free
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
If Turbine were so quick to shut down Asheron's Call 2 then why are they keeping Dungeons & Dragons Online alive?
Because in the time between then and now the F2P has shown itself to be a potentially viable market and a possible way to make DDO profitable. I think had the F2P market shown promise at that time AC2 may have become F2P as well.
This is great news! I gonna try it out ^^
however I would have like it if they did they same thing like guildwars
just buy the box and play in stead of cashsops..

How does it make sense logically to take a game that has failed as a P2P and spend the money to port it to console? I fail to see the logic in spending more money on a game that has failed to make money so far.

I still have that tinfoil for you. You just dont like Item shops do you. Did you read the part that for subscribers that nothing has changed, and they get 500 turbine bucks for the shop a month.
