I for one would really like to see a pvp free game ,theres tons of pvp games out there now but almost none that offer just pve. I m really tired of the lack of high end content cause they make it pvp. Tired of seeing professions nerfed to balance pvp, which always ends up destroying the pve element. Just for once i would like to see a game where pvp wasnt a concern.
I can see your concern and desire for a straight up PVE MMO. However if you leave certain styles out of a game you're leaving out potential subscribers. While I also agree with companies wanting to tap into all corners of the market they often do it very poorly, like you say, making one aspect good and destroying another. One day someone may get this right.

Nah, FFXI has done extremely well for itself without PvP! Just look at the subscriber numbers for AoC, WAR, EQII, VSoH, DF...etc etc.....most of those are fairly newish and frankly FFXI subscriber #s trump all them combined! {based on 500k consistent subs from previous 6+ years of service and SE recently announcing over 2 million active characters of which they've always never counted mule lvl 1 characters in any chart!}
Supposedly you can count LOTRO as a PvE game, but even still with the PvMP seperate; PvE suffers as they tweak the classes to combat the monster-players.....its lame! This here is an example of a PvE game ruined by a PvP addition!
well i just created the account to post since i found the whole add pvp or not into the core gampley quite interesting. the thing with the PvP in FFXIV having played FFXI for around 3 to 4 years is that a more versatile inclussion of a pvp system would be greatly appareciated withing the game, for the fact that at least for me after going through the game and its various expansions misions getting geared up etc leveing other jobs to 75 (mnk, pld, rng, ninja, warrior) my interest towards tthe game shifted a bit towards the self acomplishment, than more towards contnuing the plot of the game, when i tried joining the various game types such as ballista, brenner etc, not only did i find it hard to come acrooss any player interested in this game aditions.
i am well aware FFXI was mainly a PvE game yet as a true fan i can admit the game lacked allot of pollish in balancing the end game and the gridning that was required to acomplish any task, and i might be going a bit off topic here, but i think its part of the whole discussion that well the main reference we have for FFXIV is FFXI i like to adrees at least what i found to be the greater issues, to know what to expect in the upcoming game.
J-rpg's are famous for one thing if it isnt broken dont fix it and sometimes dont even inovate it, i believe just like Aion and other MMo's this one is gonna have the japanese people and fan base as their main target, having the american en european market dominated by other games such as WoW and Lineage 2. i believe FFXIV will be more as a continuation to the core system of FFXI such as gridning, level based, group questing etc etc.
so an inclussion of a more complex PvP system might be out of the question, allthough having a more flexible, soloabel and user friendly mmo would be much better than the beast that FFXI was i mean anyoen who ever camped king behemoth knows what im talking about =P.
well thats my 2 cents of what im expecting or would wish to see in the new FFXIV so yeah im pro to PvP within reason of being at least better thought of that its predecesor without making it a tool that could turno into abuse like wow etc
ps sorry for my spelling my english is a bit rusty
If I had to choose between PvP and PvE. I would much prefer to have a game with amazing PvE Content. Whether it be solo, grouped, raiding, questing or even grinding. PvP is fun, I enjoy it myself. But I have to agree with several others that having PvP as a major part, greater than arena's/battle grounds and dueling, usually has a negative affect on the PvE part of the game. If I want full PvP I'll just go play some Call of Duty. I would much prefer to have classes perfectly ballanced and every class having a specific role to play in combat over pvp balanced any day. Especially if it's going to be WoW pvp balanced . I find being able to take on anyone a problem. I should have specific roles to play as well in pvp if it's added, not be a super heroe .
Arena's, Battle Grounds, Dueling and maybe even Guild Battles are good fun. Open PvP is not for FF imo.
"What's the use of shouting? If I die, then I was only able to reach this level"
Well if it can be made that it has both great PvE and PvP then awesome. Most posts seem to be about choosing one over the other though, I guess most of us rarely or never see a game that balances both greatly? O.o
I would however definitely choose PvE over PvP, and comments like "You seem to need to play a singleplayer game instead" is a bit retarded since I would actually love to play for example Oblivion with other people even if there was no PvP.
My point with that is, that Oblivion is imho a very fun game but I always missed being able to play with my friends and thats what I look for in a mmo, a big world where I can have fun challenging the content that is provided without a need to fight other players.
FFXI is certainly one of the games I have enjoyed the most, I also enjoyed the pvp that was provided in it and I would definitely like to see both implemented in FFXIV, though I'm definitely mostly interested to see what kind of PvE there will be and what kind of classes they will have from the FF universe and etc. Gaahh, need more information abou the game! ^^
I'm actually kinda torn to be honest with you. A PvPvE kinda of experience like what Aion is supposed to be could be fun for FFXIV but I just don't know how it would be when put up against FFXI. I saw the point being made that Final Fantasy characters shouldn't be fighting other Final Fantasy players (Ehrgeiz and Dissidia aisde) and I agree with that, but playing with the assholes of Asura there are times when you just need to keep a players ego in check and beat the everliving piss out of him/her. Then again I hated WoW for the ganking if you didn't like it in FFXI with the accidental MPKs back in the day could you imagine what it would be like to have someone actually attacking you while you are trying to kill Fafnir.
I dunno, I think waring factions could be a good thing but I just don't know how it would work.
And BTW before anyone throws a flag about inner nation fighting in FFXI ... San d'Oria did ally with the Quadav (might have been orcs, but i doubt it) at one point to attack the armies of Windurst seeing the Taru's magic a threat to the throne. Sandy and Windy were are war until the military industiral complex known as Bastok was founded. Then people had to keep and eye out from both sides.
As long as there's no open world PvP, I'll be happy. I want an mmo that is focused on PvE. I'm tired of all the hybrids that suck ass. I want 1 MMO that does 1 thing amazingly. Like I said before I can go play a FPS if I want PvP.
"What's the use of shouting? If I die, then I was only able to reach this level"
I don't want to see PvP in XIV. XI had Ballista which I guess you could consider PvP but it was more fun rather then who wins. I don't mind if they add something like Ballista again but please do not add rewards like armor and weapons and whatever else.
I really enjoyed FFXI and its group system and heavy story based quest line, I wasn't looking fro seomthing I could grind in a week and stop playing altogether, But once I got to end game (after 2 years of player) I longed for pvp, I guess I would like to see instanced PVP, controlled environments, where pvp is sublimentary having a team focused on a goal and using force to attain if nessisary. Age of Conan did this meagerly and did it well. Instanced PVP minio games, absolutly no reward but super fun and a new game was alwyas being qued for from anywhere in the game. This would work well I think as a more reward focused mini game with rewards or points based system to redeem if a player has enough points.
You guys are kidding yourselves if you think FFXIV will have anything other than something similar to Ballista in regards to PVP content.
Remember what they said in the Q&A? "Why should gamers play FFXIV over any other MMO in the market?" and they replied with "because of the story".
Story.
It's going to follow the same pattern as FFXIV, a story with co-op elements. Just like FFXI. Get over the whole PvP argument.
PvP added into a game that isn't meant around PvP usually ends up ruining the game.
WoW...1st, it was a PvE game, then the PvP playerbase took over and it became all about tweaking and nerfing the classes based around Arenas and PvP. No thanks, that's ultimately why I quit.

My mistake.. SF is means for Science Fiction.
yoroshiku.
- FF14 project (coded name : rapture) was started 4 years old. At that time, it might be called FF15.. if SE is working on FF13, and FF14 for the offline version of FF series.
- Eorzea. is a continent / place name. The world will be called ????? (HADELN).
- They will add in some Science Fiction element like those in FF10 and FF13 on this game. It will be a total different type of fantasy compare to FF11.
- It will use Square Enix ID Account system as to replace the pol system. 30 days unit payment system.
- No selling in-game item planned.
- All races from FF11 will be included in FF14. We cant tell you got other new races or not. at this moment.
- Regarding job system., the keyword is [ Weapon ] . To enrich our new job system, we will put in weapon elements into it.
- There will be High Level job system. <my mistake: after browsing through 3 websites, it is confirmed that wont have high level job system.>
- There wont be experience point level system on FF14. (updated, my mistake) <my thought: I still cannot understand this. some people said it might be Skill Point system?? >
- We are thinking to have character names (from FF11) transfer service.
- Battle system will be focusing more on real time. Timing will be a very important factor.
- The selling point for FF14 is [Growth] ..
- All song will be composed by Nobuo Uematsu. 5.1ch sound.
- The leviathan like monster will have a important role.
- The field that cast by blm ? we saw on the trailer, will be as a part of the battle system too.
- Many Vs Many.. = Mob will be party to fight the player too.
- PC spec requirement will be quite high.
- Server max population will be 5- 6000 players.
- Service will be available on 2010. Beta test wont be as long as WOW where they have their beta test like 9 months.
- It might have Full voice.
- There will be a better system then field of valor. For example, i login today, i can do this. i login tomorrow, i can do that.. etc..
- No PVP system.
- Got Time element, such as four season.
- They want to make a benchmark for FF14.
- They are still discussing with MS , on working for a 360 Release.
Interesting... but it seems like most people who already enjoy FFXI don't mind the lack of PvP and a lot don't seem to want to include it. Maybe duels or something would be okay but anything beyond that is not needed for a FF game. ^^
It seems to me that PvP leads to class balancing issues which in turn leads to boring class design. I really don't want a hybrid game and I hope they balance the game 100% for group PvE. By all means have mini games (or chocobo racing - whatever) for comptetition but I say no to PvP.
I agree, there are plenty of games out right now that do the regular pvp, no need to put another hybrid game out there. Some sort of pvp involving mini games would be really cool though. I hope its mostly PvE though.

Ahhhhhh, so many against pvp. Haha, I am actually surprised....I really really hope there is pvp, and not arena pvp...world pvp, realm pvp, factions, good and bad!? Come on, I am not saying lets pull another AoC full hardcore griefer pvp but seriously NPC combat.....if I wanted to kill fake brainless preprogrammed, always the same, very predictable, just gotta practice on it enough times NPC bosses, I could just play a single player game, or even a small scale multiplayer game. I think PVP is the way of the future, but I can see where all of you are coming from, like you said PVP tends to get in the way of PVE (personally I get bored sick of PVE) but rather then letting this be a law thats set in stone about MMO's maybe there just needs to be a different approach to it, maybe we just haven't seen a PVP/PVE game done right? This industry is all about growing and adapting and improving, I think there are alternatives to having just PVE. For example, what if they items/armor/skills did different things based on wether or not you were fighting an NPC or a player, that way PVE can continue to be the way it is, and any PVP changes, the PVE players very well might never even know about since thats just not what they do.
Square has been making games for a long time and pretty much not dabbled in PVP at all, but I have to say PVP is getting more popular and gaining more of a fan base, which might tempt them to try it out this time. I haven't played FFXI, so I can't say anything about the PVP in it, but someone mentioned piggy backing PVP onto a game designed for PVE, but if they planned to have PVP from the start they easilly could design it in such a way that it is very unique and very compatible. At least we can cross our fingers (or curse the concept if you really feel it doesn't belong).
- All races from FF11 will be included in FF14. We cant tell you got other new races or not. at this moment. Bet the new race is that horned one from the Ivalice land. forget their name, but they're in the mural {signature I have} - No PVP system. ~ All I needed to hear! Screw ruining yet another MMO with PvP! - Got Time element, such as four season. ~ Excellent, I always loved the time, elements, directions that everything in XI runs on! - They want to make a benchmark for FF14. ~ Sweet those are fun to watch and brag about scores with!

I'm not disagreeing, just saying that I can see why companies want both styles in their game (more money) however they usually screw it up.

No seriously PvP in MMOs is usually balanced at the expense of PvE content.
Balance and build for PvE, make PvP a little side item mini-game type of thing and I'd be happy.
