So... anyone seen any large naval battles lately?

xzyaxxzyax Member Posts: 2,459

You know like the ones that were shown in the trailers:

www.youtube.com/watch

The battles with 10+ large ships in them...

The battles that were supposed to be a fairly common occurance by now...

Where are they?

For those that remember this topic came up a few times before release...

www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/2662012#2662012

It was pointed out that it was a mistake not to Beta Test large-scale Naval battles.

It was pointed out that the time and grind requirement of building most of this stuff was prohibitive.

It was pointed out that Tasos and  Aventurine was blowing smoke with their trailers.

Well... the 2-3 months that the ardent supporters said it would take to see these battles has expired.  So, where are they?

Also what happened to the "Race around the World" that was to take place with hundreds of ships from every clan?

What happened to the pirates and cargo ships?

Hmm... makes you think back before Beta even started and wonder if some of those that were questioning Tasos' hype knew a thing or two.

um, a ship kinda blew up that city on the eastern coast of ruby.

and lots of people go fishing on rafts.

    that's about it i think...

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

It's probably safe to say that everything conceivable has already been said about Darkfall and it's subjective shortcomings.

Do you have anything new to add?

    There is NO miracle patch.

95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch.

    Hope is not a stategy.

the big ships still cost too much for people to risk losing them.

bit like titans in eve - you don't bring them out unless you're 95% sure you're going to be able to go home with them.

um, there's like a dozen different sized ships created by shipbuilding in darkfall.

no it is NOT like a titan.  it's like being afraid to deploy carriers, dreads, moms AND titans.  hell, plus a few more, since you see none of anything except the occasional raft.  you don't even use ship building to create rafts.

bad comparison for the titans. sorry.

on a serious note - stop trolling.  if you don't have anything to contribute to a topic, why post only trolling the thread?

My question to the OP is this.

Could you please provide a reference to where AV said that battles involves 10 ships should be happening within 2-3 months of game time.

players comments franckly dont count on "supposed to"

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

I have a feeling that the boat/ship/dingy owners are trying to finance thier trip across the Atlantic at this time.

But seriously, the cost scares the owners into keeping everything drydocked. Couple that with the chance that the danged things have a chance to get away from you, and fly off into the sunset, that no one wants to risk the virtual monies.

    Short version; dunno.

Well when you have 800+ player zerg guilds that people are claiming to be in/see, do you really think it should take more than 2-3 months of game time?

Man, in that time I could level to 75 in FFXI.

Darkfal is complete garbage, this comming from a closed beta tester.

in order to build ships, you need to build shipyards...

does AV need to post that people will take over and build cities?  do they need to post how long it'll be until shipyards are functioning?

    stop trolling.

i, personally, am sick and tired of this silly game of "someone said exactly this or that".

lack of resources is NOT why ships aren't being built.

people can fly off in your ship.  people can steal your ship.  people are just not wanting to spend all that time grinding, just for some wanker to come steal/hack the ship.

lots of ships aren't around because of horrible game mechanics.

your last line eliminates your post as an innocent question.  troll elsewhere please.

go to the link.  all the fanbois were up in arms (in feb.) that someone would DARE to doubt that those huge naval battles would NOT be an every day occurance.

Just as a point of reference I believe one of my clan mates could buy a few of the smaller ones (not the rafts) if he wanted to liqudate. I believe I could buy one of the starter ones which material cost is around 60k if I liquated. if I found an astrolab it would be a lot less.

But we are waiting for the  NA server before we make any choices in what directin we want to take things.

I have not seen any major naval battle, yet!

But that is the main reason why i play Darkfall. I estimate it will take about 6-12 months from the release before we see people/clans losing ships as they loose mounts(wich peple were to afrais to loose at the beginning), and i have no problem with this.

Im even pretty sure AV will make the ship grind much less time consuming in the future. But still, this is not WoW, every feature is not for everyone. Just because there is ships doesnt mean you need to be involved with them. Its a personal choice.

People are just afraid the hackers will pull a "Flying Dutchman" with their ships.  So they keep them hidden.  Ships are serious business after all.

What does the new server have to do with it?

People use naval warfare as a reason why MO won't be as good as DFO.  I've seen many people actually use it as an excuse for why they won't play MO when it comes out.  Yet, there isn't any naval warfare in DFO either.

There aren't any naval battles because of the amount of resources need to build the ship, and the amount of grind that is involved in getting to a point that you can build a ship.

Then you've got all those "hardcore" people that are scared to lose it.  That doesn't sound so hardcore to me.

Obviously the mechanics aren't working properly or there would be ships sailing after 4 months.

Then again there wouldn't be much of an advantage in macroing sailing; so most of the playerbase wouldn't really be interested in ships.

wow I cant believe what I am reading. As far as I know, this game was full of "hardcore" players, not carebears. So clans do not care about the ships because they are afraid to lose them?

Why do you expect these ship battles to happen right in front of you when you log in? The map is pretty big, battles happen.

that is what the op is about.  asking who has seen the naval battles.

so, as far as large naval battles, or naval battles involving ships other than RAFTS... proof or stfu.

    cuz um, they don't happen.

look at all the videos you're NOT seeing in this thread, along with all the people saying they don't happen, who play the game.

What he said. As, with Darkfall's amazing Skyboat-Combat™, the map is much bigger than what it may seem, and you never know where an enemy is going to attack from!

So, then we will be seeing the big naval battles soon?

So, it would be your opinion that the reason we aren't seeing the big naval battles is simply just not enough time has elasped yet?

Personally I think the reason we aren't seeing any big naval battles is that the cost doesn't warrant the risk.  The same is true of just about any larger item in DarkFall.  Hovertanks being a good example.

The Devs need to start realizing that the players aren't thrilled about spending 3 months of time to build something that might go poof in a few seconds.

A few days... sure that is worth the risk.

A few months... heh... I think we can all see the results of that.

    Yep.

The same can be said of pretty much any longer thread from pre-Beta and Beta.

Go back about 6-12 months and read through the threads.  Jot down how many familiar names that you see that were gung-ho on DarkFall back then.  I'll give you a hint... there are very, very few.  Why is that?

    Even now...

It used to be a new thread would be lucky to stay on the first page for a day.  Now a new thread without a single reply can stay on the front page for 2 weeks.

It doesn't take a very bright person to see that DarkFall's day in the lime-light has passed them by.  They took too long to get the major issues fixed, and release some new content.

Will the NA release bring back some excitement for DarkFall?  If it is at the cost of EU-1 dying... not sure how much they will have gained.  I guess sometime in July will tell the tale.  I'll still be around... not sure how many ardent supporters will be.

I've said all along I'll stay interested in DarkFall until they fold or they offer the Free Trials like they intended from the get go.  Heck, I've still got a few "guarantees" from vocal supporters back in Oct./Nov. saying that I'd be playing my Free Trial no later than Dec./Jan. at the latest.  Heh... still waiting.

heh well dont be fooled, there are less people in game as the rush wore off but there are still thousands people play. I run into people all the time, its just that some places on the map as in any other game are a bit empty compared to others.

Also forums represnt less than 1 percent of people playing the game, if you dont know how I can explain later.
