You can’t kill WoW /moved

*Warning*

This is a bit of a rant and a wall of text (as you can clearly see). If you don’t want to hear my opinion, then don’t read this.

This is something I just straight up want to get off my chest since I keep seeing the same words on every MMO blog, forum and reply to a review.

“This is going to be a WoW KILLER”

You can’t just kill WoW, you just can’t. It’s 99.9% impossible. Just to get the idiot comments off the table, I’ve played WoW since 3 months after its’ release, had TONS of different mains/alts at max level, participated in every aspect of the game with a casual and hardcore mentality, been in countless guilds, and seen countless more guilds die. Friends come and go. I’ve seen friendships made, and shattered. In the end, I quit WoW (roughly 6 months ago) and would never recommend anyone to play it. I officially hate the game.
That being said, WoW is the biggest of Titans in the MMO world, and no one is going to beat it. It’s all downhill from here.

Why can’t anyone beat WoW?

Not because it has over 11 mill subscribers (or is it 13 mill now? Who cares). Not because it sucks your life away. Defiantly not because its “it takes skill to play” (which is pure bullshit).
It’s not because it has over 11 million subscribers (or is it 13 million now? Who cares), it’s not because it sucks your life away, not because they “stole” from other games and it’s definitely not because it takes “skill” to play (which is pure bullshit). It’s because Blizzard KNEW wtf they were doing when they made this game.
Have you ever stepped back and just looked at the game? Looked at all options you have?
For those that still play the game, if you’re like me, you sign on and you are immediately BORED OUT OF YOUR MIND!! You have so many things you need to do in the game and you simply don’t want to do them.

Just look at the list.

Crafting, Farming, Reputation grinding, Abusing the AH, PVP, Instances/Raiding.
Any one of those can be your main focus in the game. Any one of those can literally SUCK months out of your life.

For example, I have met a lot of people in game that spend all their time abusing the AH. They log on, check their mailbox, put stuff back on the AH, maybe quest a bit, and then log off. Exactly the same can be said for raiding. You, or someone you know, ONLY logs on for raiding dates. It’s a huge waste of $15 a month, IMO, but people do it. Why, you ask? Not because they lack social lives, but because they have invested so much time into
WoW that to quit… would be admitting that they have literally wasted months, even years of their lives.

AND THAT’S THE POINT!!

WoW is an MMO. MMOs are simply multiplayer games (duh). What makes MMOs different than say Counter Strike or Street Fighter is the fact that there is no end. The game is supposed to be a virtual, living, breathing world. WOW has, without a doubt, done this job just a bit too well. No other MMO is going to match WoW because WoW is literally a world.

You can’t beat WoW, you can only copy it. Some games change how/what you craft. Others change the combat style or even mix raiding and pvp (keep siege? lawl you mean keep zerg). But in the end, the game is just an incomplete copy of a Titan.

In its development stage, Blizzard spent countless months tossing ideas at a wall. Mixing, matching, adding, and refining ideas. I don’t fully know how long it took to make WoW, from idea to masterpiece. I do not know how many people were on the devolvement team that originally conceived the idea of WoW and all of its magnificence. I do know that the amount of effort that went into WoW would have to be tripled if ANY game is to even come close to killing it, which would take decades, and anyone that knows how game development politics work will understand that the amount of time and money that a company is going to have to put into it, just doesn’t seem worth it. The first step in a long journey is always the hardest correct?

I WANT A GAME TO KILL WOW!!

I said before, after years of my life wasted, I officially hate WoW. I WANT WOW TO DIE!! I’ve tried to have fun with the game, but in the end, the fun dies and it turns to 100% work.
I want a company’s CEO to wake up one morning and go “I WANT TO MAKE A FUCKING AWESOME GAME” then call the lead of his Dev team and say “call a meeting, it’s time we get off our asses”. Then start throwing money at the dev team and have them work for 10-15 years on a game. LMAO what company is gonna do that right? But that’s what it’s gonna take to beat WoW.

When a game comes out that beats WoW’s magnificence. When a game emerges from the crap and bullshit that we are forced to play. A game that has the blood, sweat and tears of hundreds of developers, artists, programmers and QA testers poured into it.

THAT will be a game worth playing.

Btw, I hate Leeroy, I was on his server before he became famous. Played with him, chatted with him. And he’s a fucking moron. Isn't it funny how everyone loves retards? Just wanted to say that. FYI, no i'm not jealous of him. Why would any non-self centered person want that kind of attention?

Well i've read your opinion and respect that you have said opinion.

But what are you doing here?

Looking for justification for your opinion?

  • rellorello Member Posts: 186

99.9% impossible you say? Well then you say it can be killed :D

  • XiaokiXiaoki Member EpicPosts: 4,050

A "there is no 'WoW killer'" mixed with a "I played WoW extensively for years and now I hate it".

    Not bad.

But you should have mixed in a "WoWs subscriber numbers dont count because it has 8 million Chinese playing and they only pay pennies a month and are all gold farmers" or a "WoW is ruining the MMO genre" and gone for the hat trick.

I can't understand why someone would say they have wasted years into a mmorpg and hates it for doing so , is then on mmorpg.com ranting about it and wanting another mmorpg to beat it? hmm irony the right word there?

Every game ever invented/created is a waste of time, its not going to stop war, earn you millions, get you a wife and kids, or even a job, no its a something thats meant to be fun, I'm playing WoW after leaving it when it first started and I'm enjoying myself and thats the point, when I'm at lvl 80 I don't know what I'll do, but if I don't find it fun anymore then I'll move on to the next game, but I won't make hate threads or say i've wasted my life due to playing WoW lol.

But I do agree not one single game will take WoW down, mainly because its grown, and everyone thinks that to beat WoW it has to do it in the first few months of release, which is just stupid, thats like expecting a start up company to turn over more money than Microsoft, its just not going to happen. Wow has lots of features, but still lacks one thing for me, purpose, not one single person matters in the game, you don't need as many people as possible on your side to earn an end goal, for example RF Online has purpose, everyone in your race has to fight over the Chip War for the access to the Mine, you need as many people as possible to help win, also there is elected leaders etc, WoW people log in and out and it doesn't matter, thats what a MMORPG needs to beat WoW, wow's features with a purpose and the quality and finish coupled with the publicity and there you have a strong contender to WoW, but it has to be easy to play.

" How can you kill that which has no life"?

But seriously, nobody in their right mind would want to kill wow. If wow were to die, then all those people who play it would filter off to other games and ruin those communities, as well. Now I'm not saying that everyone who plays wow is immature, but the wow community (in general) is "enthusiasticly youthful".

Wow is easy to play and simple to master, it appeals to a large segment of people. That is the totality of its charm.

Ranting, Fuming, Flaming or saying something that I believe needs to be said. Even though I’m a nobody trying to sound like a somebody.

Yes, WoW like all games is ment to be fun/entertaining. But at the same time, like all games, when you beat it (or at least get somewhere in it) it is suppose to leave you with a sense of accomplishment. That’s the “fun” part. That’s what makes games not a waste of time. If you walk away from a game without that sense, then you start asking yourself “what was the point in doing that?” This is where I agree with you in saying “WoW has no sense of purpose.” That is the reason I hate WoW, because it takes from you the one thing you can’t get back, time, and it gives you absolutely nothing back. It was fun for maybe a one of the years that I played, I should of quit then, believe me when I say that I’m kicking my own ass for not doing so.

I didn’t just wake up this morning yelling “I’m going to rant about how I want WoW to die!” This is something I have been thinking about for months. Thinking about why I let WoW steal my time (no I don’t care about the money). This rant is my way of saying what I think most of the people reading this forum are thinking. This rant is my way of saying that I want a game worth playing. A game that is going to leave me going “damn, that was awesome” /takes breather “time for round 2!!”

Now that I think about it, that sounds like sex. hmm....damn my wife is sleeping.

  • I guess its official. WoW bashing is the latest fad.

It seems you aren't taken serious as a gamer these days unless you bash WoW. The simple game play? Is there an MMORPG that's hard? I've never played one that was really hard and the closest game which required real thought to play was AO. The community? Play on the AoC FFA servers and you will think WoW is tame. That game has the worst community I've ever played with.

I get it. You don't like WoW. Join the millions who hate it too even though they play it and have fun. People are stupid I guess ... but never underestimate the power of human stupidity <Lazurus Long>

Troll factor: 4/10 You would have done better if your post was more structured and not a collection of repeated statements and general chaotic thought.

Epeen growth: 0/10 Look down. Its still small ... j/k

A lot of strange arguments there, Mr OP.

WoW ruined your life, or you wasted years of your life in WoW.  You can also said that during the years from birth to 2 years old, you wasted 2 years struggling with the milk bottle.  Fact is, you have your life in your hands, the you years back bad chosen WoW over other forms of killing time (wasting time).  If you had not played WoW if you go drinking, you might come to a drinker.com and post a long wall of text saying, "Alcoholics ruined my life".

There are many activities that can kill months of idle time in WoW.  That is the same as saying a good poker team can help you kill hours of idle time in the evening, or the good TV show can help remove a few hours of idle time every evening.  Come to think of it, when I first play board games, its hours or hours, days after days, in my basement.  When I play badminton as a kid, its 10 hours a day mastering the dancing around the court routine, hours or hours of conditioning my arm to one form of strike.  Oh yes, dating is hours of hours of sweet talking too.  All are wasted.  Eating is a waste too, you chew and chew.

You have done all that in WoW and now you are burnt out.  So suddenly you turn against the very game that you have chosen over other forms of time-killer over years.  You have been living with a woman for years, and suddenly you feel bored and started telling us that you wasted years of your time on her.

I am about to see what you mean.

As for who can kill WoW.  Why do I need to care?  If I enjoy WoW, I log on.  If I cherish the smell of a burger, I go to the backyard and fire up the grill.  I personally will not post a thread saying "EQ killed my youth", "UO was a waste of time", "SWG till CU ruined my life" "DAoC wrecked havoc on my ... ".

No, I have my share of fun.  Its over.  This is not a marriage, just a game sub.  I come and go as I like, no obligations, no remorse.

    Thank for reading my rant.

WOW will be just like any other game..In time it will out live its usefulness..

Oh and here some bit of news for ya also..

Sony is taking credit for the existence of the hottest MMORPG around, World of Warcraft, saying that had it not been for their Everquest, WoW would not have existed to wow the gaming world as it does today.

WoW didn’t “ruin” my life, MMOs, games or any other form of entertainment. Yes I did choose to “waste” time with WoW and there are multiple factors of why I chose to do that and in the end I am kicking myself for it. I don’t drink btw.

Thank you for making me think my friend. You have made me realize that this rant is my soul saying that I had fun with WoW but was ultimately disappointed with the long term “goals” of the game. So now I want a better game but no game is ever going to be better so I should hang myself because life isn’t worth living. Or I could spend more time with my wife, maybe should have a couple kids and just spend my time watching them waste their time in the same pursuit of “what should I waste my time on today?”

Wait, I’m drifting here. I think it’s all your post’s negative energy rubbing off.

My apologies for sounding like a d**k. You did make me think though (seriously).

First and foremost, respect your sister, if she exist.  Don't drag her into the mud fight.

Second, mine is a rant.  I would not do what you did, does not mean you are wrong doing it.  You rant yours I rant mine.  Just 2 persons not knowing each other, ranting on our own.

You are looking for a good game, everyone is.  There are thousands of games in the market, but right now, you might not find one worth the time.  There are thousands of movies being made a year, I have hard time finding 10 worth the 2 hours of sitting in front of it.

Sad state, isn't it?  I know, I ranted.  I turn away from exploring myself to accepting and accomodating others, and thru that (I learnt that mode of thinking as an attached monk in a chinese monastery in middle china for 6 month), I found it less important to find a (game, movie, picture, song, whatever) that pleases ME.  I dropped the ME to a lower echolen of importance, and things appears to be less dismal.

Another rant.  It is not directed against you, its a rant.

Wow, I have to say that I respect that way of thinking. Rant or otherwise

Why do you want WoW to die?  That game is bringing literally millions of people to mmos that might not otherwise have started playing mmos.  It was this way in my case.  I started with WoW, I enjoyed playing it, but then I moved on to other mmos.  I would say that most people would eventually try out other games in this genre once haveing played WoW to just see what else is out there.  I personally think that WoW is a good game and I'm glad that so many people play it.

I think the biggest mistake people make is thinking that a better than WoW game can kill WoW. I think even if you make a game three times better than wow, that still won't kill WoW because somany people are attached to their characters and time invested...

In other words, only time can kill wow and if I had to bet I would say it's going to take at least a decade counting from now on...

I agree that nobody and nothing is going to kill WoW.

I do, however, think that WoW's days are numbered.  The mastermind behind WoW, Jeff Kaplan, is no longer on the WoW team.  Blizzard no longer has its best people working on it.  High profile departures of key designers usually marks the beginning of the end for an MMO.  And while it isn't going to be noticeable in the near term, I think WoW has already reached its peak.  See how the curves are levelling out on MMOGChart.com:

Evidence for this is provided by you, Falcon4hire; for I do not think you are alone.  Games are subject to a lot of "churn," and the question we have to ask ourselves is if there are any more people out there that can replace the ones that leave?  I suspect that in the five years WoW has been online, everyone who would play WoW has already played it or is playing it now.

This game is going to drop, and I suspect it will drop fast once it does.  So while nothing outside of WoW is going to kill WoW, I do suspect that WoW will eventually die off...and if I were a betting man, I'd predict next year.

They have shifted a few very good people to other teams. They also hired a lot of dumb people with no production experience on the WoW team. Some reviewer and some guy who never worked on a game in his life get top positions.

I found that rather strange to be honest.
