“This is going to be a WoW KILLER”
You can’t just kill WoW, you just can’t. It’s 99.9% impossible. Just to get the idiot comments off the table, I’ve played WoW since 3 months after its’ release, had TONS of different mains/alts at max level, participated in every aspect of the game with a casual and hardcore mentality, been in countless guilds, and seen countless more guilds die. Friends come and go. I’ve seen friendships made, and shattered. In the end, I quit WoW (roughly 6 months ago) and would never recommend anyone to play it. I officially hate the game.

That being said, WoW is the biggest of Titans in the MMO world, and no one is going to beat it. It’s all downhill from here.
    Why can’t anyone beat WoW?
Not because it has over 11 mill subscribers (or is it 13 mill now? Who cares). Not because it sucks your life away. Defiantly not because its “it takes skill to play” (which is pure bullshit).

It’s not because it has over 11 million subscribers (or is it 13 million now? Who cares), it’s not because it sucks your life away, not because they “stole” from other games and it’s definitely not because it takes “skill” to play (which is pure bullshit). It’s because Blizzard KNEW wtf they were doing when they made this game.

Have you ever stepped back and just looked at the game? Looked at all options you have?

For those that still play the game, if you’re like me, you sign on and you are immediately BORED OUT OF YOUR MIND!! You have so many things you need to do in the game and you simply don’t want to do them.
    Just look at the list.
Crafting, Farming, Reputation grinding, Abusing the AH, PVP, Instances/Raiding.

Any one of those can be your main focus in the game. Any one of those can literally SUCK months out of your life.
For example, I have met a lot of people in game that spend all their time abusing the AH. They log on, check their mailbox, put stuff back on the AH, maybe quest a bit, and then log off. Exactly the same can be said for raiding. You, or someone you know, ONLY logs on for raiding dates. It’s a huge waste of $15 a month, IMO, but people do it. Why, you ask? Not because they lack social lives, but because they have invested so much time into

WoW that to quit… would be admitting that they have literally wasted months, even years of their lives.
    AND THAT’S THE POINT!!
WoW is an MMO. MMOs are simply multiplayer games (duh). What makes MMOs different than say Counter Strike or Street Fighter is the fact that there is no end. The game is supposed to be a virtual, living, breathing world. WOW has, without a doubt, done this job just a bit too well. No other MMO is going to match WoW because WoW is literally a world.
You can’t beat WoW, you can only copy it. Some games change how/what you craft. Others change the combat style or even mix raiding and pvp (keep siege? lawl you mean keep zerg). But in the end, the game is just an incomplete copy of a Titan.
In its development stage, Blizzard spent countless months tossing ideas at a wall. Mixing, matching, adding, and refining ideas. I don’t fully know how long it took to make WoW, from idea to masterpiece. I do not know how many people were on the devolvement team that originally conceived the idea of WoW and all of its magnificence. I do know that the amount of effort that went into WoW would have to be tripled if ANY game is to even come close to killing it, which would take decades, and anyone that knows how game development politics work will understand that the amount of time and money that a company is going to have to put into it, just doesn’t seem worth it. The first step in a long journey is always the hardest correct?
I WANT A GAME TO KILL WOW!!
I said before, after years of my life wasted, I officially hate WoW. I WANT WOW TO DIE!! I’ve tried to have fun with the game, but in the end, the fun dies and it turns to 100% work.

I want a company’s CEO to wake up one morning and go “I WANT TO MAKE A FUCKING AWESOME GAME” then call the lead of his Dev team and say “call a meeting, it’s time we get off our asses”. Then start throwing money at the dev team and have them work for 10-15 years on a game. LMAO what company is gonna do that right? But that’s what it’s gonna take to beat WoW.
When a game comes out that beats WoW’s magnificence. When a game emerges from the crap and bullshit that we are forced to play. A game that has the blood, sweat and tears of hundreds of developers, artists, programmers and QA testers poured into it.
THAT will be a game worth playing.
Btw, I hate Leeroy, I was on his server before he became famous. Played with him, chatted with him. And he’s a fucking moron. Isn't it funny how everyone loves retards? Just wanted to say that. FYI, no i'm not jealous of him. Why would any non-self centered person want that kind of attention?

    try again

Aion has been released for some time in 2 countries, Korea and China, and just recently released in another one Taiwan, for 3 weeks

it has +3.5m players, and growing at lightning speed. in feuds where WoW used to reign supreme

plus aiming to release in other countries like japan and west around the corner, with shitloads of ppl counting the seconds to go.

sorry bud, but 75% of WoW's succeed was based on East, when you saw WoW bragging about 11m subs, 4m were in west and 7m in east.

and in east, WoW is being rapidly outplayed by Aion.

unless you imply that +3.5m asians that have NEVER been interested in playing MMOs before all of a sudden decided to give Aion a try, so that didnt mean a fatal blow to WoW....yeeeeeeeeaaaaah suuuuuuuuuuuuuuure, and the earth is flat too

11m? thats a thing from the past, and its no wonder that Blizzard havent released any official subs number since 1 year

Aion, being the new kid on the block,is already eating WoW's delicious, delicious Asian cake.

for the west,i dont predict such craze, WoW will still be stronger, yet Aion will steal quite a lot of players from it,1-2m.

but who cares, when it comes to MMOS the Asian market is the only one that marks what is a resounding success and what isnt, and WoW is a midget compared to Aion in this regard

anyway, the question at hand is: will Aion kill WoW? it depends on what you understand for "killing"

does that mean that WoW will totally, positively disappear from 11m to 0?

    hell no

does that mean that WoW will see more than half of its playerbase vanish in thin air, while Aion becomes the new giant, with  amazingly high subs unmatched by any other MMO?

you can be your ass it will, and so fast that if you blink you'll miss it

It failed, as it were thrown to the ground

We are the vanquished foes of the WOW
We tried to win for why we do not know

LOTRO tried to destroy the WOW, but the WOW had its way
AOC then tried to dethrone the WOW, but WOW was in the way
WAR tried to destroy the WOW, but WOW was much too strong
Aion tried to defile the WOW, but Aion was proven wrong
    Yea!"

(Don't get upset over this silly song, as you'll only look silly. :P I don't even feel that strongly about WOW's current dominance and think eventually the market split will be more even.)

How many WoWers play only WoW and not play another game as well?  You got any ideas?

When some of these WoW players feel the need or urge to drop a game, will WoW be the first they look at to exercise the axe? You got any ideas?

When some of these WoW player go try out a new game, how many feel the need to unsub WoW, and stop playing WoW completely?  You got any ideas?

When some of these WoW players sub to a new game, how many decidedly drop WoW forever and never come back?  You got any ideas?

How many WoWers have left WoW at least once and ended up returning, time and again?  You got any ideas?

Talking about ass, yeah you are talking with your ass.  Is monthly sub so expensive to you that you can only afford 1 sub at a time?  Are game players so loyal that when they play a game, they play that exclusively?

    Sigh ... brains ...

WoW can be killed, however game developers boast too much causing gamers to expect too much, thus in turn causing a game to fail. Age of Conan boasted this for the longest time pre launch and look where it ended up. I'm not going to bach AoC though because I too was the same way, I bought into the "WoW Killer" and was disappointed upon reaching lvl 80 and completeing all endgame instances/raids before the end of the summer of its launch. In order for a game to beat the beast known as WoW the game can't brag about how awesome it's going to be; just simply do. This is a common mistake that all MMO's are making nowadays they promise too much and they can't deliver the goods. The best thing to do is tell the fans what you can do, not what you want to do.

    Current MMO: Aion
MMO Watch: Warhammer 40k Online, SWToR, GW2.
Played: Planetside, SWG, EQ, EQ2, L2, WoW, RFO, KAL, MxO, Voyage, RO,Vanguard,Tabula Rasa, Horizons, CoH/CoV,, Lotro, FFXI
First MMO: Everquest (Tunare Server, Ronin/Tide Guild)

I have to disagree with you Falcon4Hire. While I think you're right that no one game will unthrone WOW anytime soon, I think there are going ot be some big contenders that will give WOW a run for its money in the next couple years. For one, Knights of the Old Republic. This game is shaping up to have everything that an MMO should have - iconic classes, an epic world to explore, a perfect match of sci-fi and fantasy, and robust PVP. Plus, they're promising a quest system where noone's game plays exactly the same, where the choices you make actually determine whether you go down the light or dark side of the force. I understand it could all be hype, but if any company could bring the depth of storytelling that you find in Baldur's Gate or Fallout or Mass Effect, it would be Bioware. And it's freaking STAR WARS!?! That's a franchise far bigger than anything Blizzard has created. SWG had to work long and hard to throw away the huge advantage they had with the IP alone.

Other games such as Star Trek Online, Aion, and Guild Wars 2 all look promising. While none of these games will take WOW down alone, they will likely start siphoning off market share in a way that WAR and AOC were unable to.

And finally, Blizzard is about to cannibalize the WOW population thanks to Diablo 3 and the new MMO they're supposedly working on.

Your right, World Of Warcraft will never compleatly die, BUT saying that, it will hit a plague soon, a plague like know other, a WoW look-a-like that will cut alot of World Of Warcraft subscribers such as the "Everquest Effect" awhile ago. No MMORPG ever completly dies, the fans of that game wont let it. It will always be in our memories every day for the rest of our gaming lifes.

I 100% agree that you cant kill WoW. But I 100% agree that you can cripple it.

    Gatta love the "Everquest Effect".

Why does WoW needs to be killed it is just another MMORPG.  It didn't loot and plunder someone's village or commit serial murder.

Another question is, why put all this focus on WoW?

  • AdamantineAdamantine Member RarePosts: 5,094

    MMOs die if

    (a) They are not P2P and cant get enouhg money otherwise.

    (b) They run out of players.

Obviously WoW is in neither situation.

To quote Type O negative: "Everything dies"...

But Wow wont be killed by another game, it will slowly fade down into oblivion just like any other best selling computer games.

So I don't really see a Wow killer. However I find the OP strange, why would anyone play something they don't like?

Maybe it is time to get a life? Dang it, I don't even have time to do all the stuff I like myself, work and sleep kills a lot of the time and I want to have as much fun as I can the rest of the time. Life is too short to waste.

Unless of course he do loves it anyway but can't admit it???

The important bit is, is it fun? For me, yes it is fun. So I pay the 15 bucks and I enjoy myself. I've probably played every MMORPG on the Game List on this website over the years, and WoW is the only game I like. I like blizzard, they really haven't made a 'bad' game yet. People only hate on Warcraft for the sake of having something to hate. Most people gripe about a couple of things when it comes to WoW..

    1) Poor Graphics - If this is your reason to 'hate' on a game, then you are not what I call a gamer. Maybe you should take up art instead, if things looking pretty has priority over gameplay; in a video game. That said WoW had very good graphics for it's time, I say this because they were perfect for -everyone- not just the rich snobs with computers that cost quadruple digits. The animations are also very nice.

    2) Easy-mode - This is the saddest reason I've seen. I know some people like a challenge, but as far as PvE content in MMO's is concerned, there really isn't such a thing as a 'challenge' your success rate is almost always dependant on how much your raid mates are paying attention, really. So whether you live or die is fairly random until people pull their shit together. And that's just touching on raid content. Almost everything WoW did was good, if you are still a child, you might like MMOs where you sit on your ass for 10 minutes watching a mana bar regen, so you can have a 50/50 chance of soloing something, or better yet, sit on your ass for 10 minutes with 4-5 other people (in a party) after killing 5 things, so you can do it again for hours on end. <- People actually claim they want this sort of thing back, but what they're suffering from is called nostalgia. Once you get a full-time job you realize you don't have time to play this shit anymore. That's why WoW was such a success - it came out right after the horrible FFXI. A sad game if I ever saw one, fun when you had a bunch of lackey friends on your beck and call, but if you didn't? It was junk. It was a matter of timing. Everyone was sick to death of grinding games and forced grouping. So, WoW was a success.

    3) PvP Class imbalance - Find me a game without it. It's not possible, even for the most intelligent people in the world, to take every factor of a game into account divided by 10+ million players, and every possible situation, before it happens. The best a company can do is observe customer feedback and make an effort to provide changes that fix potential problems. Can you really ask for more? If so, then you ask for too much. No one can deny blizzard has done an increasingly better job at satisfying their players, unlike other MMORPGs that leave you hanging, don't communicate with you, and often times just remain clueless about their own game.

Those are the main gripes I see about WoW... 'course there are others but I'm getting sick of typing already so I'll leave this post at that.

Btw - this topic is about WoW, so don't get the wrong idea and think i'm some kind of extreme fanboy of the game. I've played plenty of other MMORPGs and liked them in the past, but right now WoW is the only one I can really enjoy. I hope I gave anyone reading this a good idea of my opinion on why WoW was a success.

  • lethyslethys Member UncommonPosts: 585

I don't think anyone individually is going to kill WoW any time soon, including Aion.  Aion will just be another popular game, and it will take a large slice out of WoW's playerbase.  Not large enough.  Not even substantial on a relative basis.  I said in another post, the only thing killing WoW is time.

By the time  more years pass, the graphics on WoW will be inacceptable, WoW will have another expansion, Blizzard's new MMO will have been released, and there will be a plethora of new MMO's available.  WoW will receive less attention, and everyone finally leaves that damn game, allowing more MMO's to be available to people who don't enjoy that game, like myself.  There will still be at least 500k subs by then too.

  • NeosaiNeosai Member Posts: 401

I don't think anyone is seriously trying to kill WoW.

To kill WoW, I'd have to pay attention to WoW, which I do not believe to be a good use of my mental energy and recsources.

  • WizardryWizardry Member LegendaryPosts: 19,332

Although i agree with most of what the OP is saying, the statement that WOW does the game well,is very much a false statement.

The reason is because "instances" are not a living breathing world,it is a cheap copout for game design,it IS the simplest easiest form of design and actually separates those players from the living breathing world. So NO WOW does not do it too good or even well,it is just a cheap game engine, that follows EQ's layout and continues to grow off of itself, not off of what it does right, because it does not do anything different than EQ does and has already done for MANY years.

Once a game gets big off of marketing and hype ,it has a VERY good chance of continuing to grow, because everyone or at least most ,especially the NEW MMO gamer wants to be like the jones .Now that people know WOW wil lbe around, they have nol fear of dead servers and a game that might shut down in the next few months.

Eventually WOW will die.Gamers garnr more knowledge, they understand gaming more, they expect more and tire of a game that copies and looks real cheap.Players soon learn once the yget that mount or epic gear, the actual reason to play the game is lost and they then realize how boring the actual game is.If you can actually say you enjoy going back and playing all the different races and classes and enjoy the leveling without care for gear or niche ideas like mounts, then you can truly say ,you are enjoying the game and not superficial ideas.Raiding/mounts/gear are superficial, you need then for bragging ONLY,because you 100% do not need them to play the game.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Actually instances were designed so that people couldn't be griefed by others. For example a group of lowbies spends an hour clearing Deadmines only to have a lv80 rogue sneak up and ninja the boss from them. That was the original purpose of instances in WoW. It's actually a very good design concept imo, and not a "cheap copout" at all.

People seem to be obsessed with WoW... dying? I don't get it, personally. When a game ceases to be fun to me, I stop playing and leave it at that. No need to hate it so much you want it to "die" (and all those people lose their jobs). Besides, EverQuest1 is still going... WoW could >probably< go another 10+ years? So.. I guess haters have plenty of time to hate it up, heh.

It's true. Blizzard have taken over the world, except China. Even that is a matter of time.

And other MMO's will run out of money, or just run out when Blizzard send their hired thugs to smash windows and bones.

Good job WoW is fairly playable!

Thats like giving childrens real weapons. It will be really fun for these childrens, till the moment one kill other.

MMORPG are socializing games,  anything that remove socializing is bad.  IF you remove socialicing with instances, because your imagination can't think of something better,  you are making your game bad because you can't think of a better way to make your game.

     Dude, youcan't kill disco!

    Oh, wait...

I hate WoW because it made my plush hamster kill himself, created twin clones of Hitler, punched Superboy Prime in reality, stared my dog down, spoiled my grandmother, assimilated me into the Borg, then made me into a real boy, just to make me a woman again.
