Originally posted by Oyjord I've tried the past week fews in beta to like this game, but it's just not happening. Here's why:
-the graphics are too "cutesy." Everything has a soft glow to it, from the login screen to the actual environments. Even the Asmodean (sp?) lands feel too Hello Kitty-ish. -the mobs are also "cutesy." Wheres the menace? Killing cute little bunny-bear hybrids isn't very viscerally exciting. -the combat animations are apocalyptic. My dagger hits a mob and things EXPLODE! Wow, what happen when I'm level 20 and I hit a mob with my dagger? The nearby village detonates? -the sounds effects are "cutsey." When you click on damn near anything, you hear a little "twinkle" effect. From NPC givers to loot, I constantly hear Mario gathering stars. (Oh, not to mention the choral music in the beginning which is simply dreadful and music I think I heard 10 years ago in a Final Fantasy game). -the battle/combat sounds are hilariously bad. Every time my female scout take damage, I hear a 5 yr old child scrape her knee. Again, where's the grit, the menace, where's the fact that I'M FIGHTING, not picking flowers?
Sorry, but these are all deal-breakers. You can add a good story onto this (which btw, I didn't see), you can add flying onto this (nothing new here, AO let you do this, what, almost 10 years ago?), you can add PvP on top of this (what, to hear LOTS of 5 yr old girls scraping their knees)...but the game will still look and sound the same. There is almost NOTHING I liked about UO, EQ, DAOC, AO, AC, WoW,, you name it, there is almost NOTHING aesthetically in common in Aion with those great games of the past No thanks, Aion, I outgrew Link and Mario and Princess Peach's cuteness 20 years ago.
Someone who thinks like this WON'T be playing AION?
WOOT! I'd hate to think I'd have to listen to this whine over Vent for 40 levels.
We have fans here shouting about things the game just doesn't do. Stop trying to put words in my mouth.
Agreed. Some of the fanbois are just as bad as the trolls. Same family actually, just a different branch.

Come on, even you can see how ridiculous this is.
Well, when a higher level player is posting his opinion on a game he will usually give us some details on the gameplay at that level and the issues he had. You didn't give us much info, but I'll just take your word on this.
Thanks for another post that is completely worthless unless you tell us how long you have played the game and what levels you have reached with your characters. I have a level 50 Assassin on the overseas servers, am I allowed the hate the game yet?
If my time watching these games and their absurd culture has taught me anything, is that people will play, and defend anything no matter how bad it actually is. If you'd like an example, you only need to look to a game like Maple Story... Incidentally; most anything aside from technical issues can be broken down and defined as personal opinion. You're not clever for figuring this out.
You make an awful lot of assumptions about how the end game will play out. Let me ask you, have you played the endgame yet?
if you hate the game soo much, then why do you have such a high level toon? i personally only waste about 20 or so levels to see if i actually like the game or not....and i am assuming you played the open beta overseas? if you did then why would you go thru the trouble of creating an account in china if you hate this game soo damn much?
Templarga, just don't waste your energy. Simple logic seems to escape him. For every contradiction he calls you out on, he just replies with canned phrase, a notable rotation of these phrases that have little to no facts behind them.
People are so desperate for a WoW competitor to arise, that something that should be an industry standard (functional combat) is widely praised, and people like this emerge. Groundless? I just took a very simple stab at your double standard that you conveniently ignored. The only answers you supply are nonsensical ones. I'll refrain from using the overused lingo, suffice to say that I am convinced that no amount of actual facts will get you to admit you were wrong about anything. Facts? What facts have you been providing for this debate? The skewed subscription numbers?
Skewed subscription numbers? You can stop trolling right now, will you. Wow has 11M players and Aion has 3.5+M, everyone knows this and this is posted everywhere around the web.
You just don't want to accept this as you don't want to accept that someone doesn't have the same opinion as you do. Pretty sad imho.
And again one more groundless post of yours. Or do you want to talk to me more about the single fact you have given us, namely how you played a game you hate until level 50?
You see, 11M people play wow. I don't like wow. Doesn't make it a bad game. It's just a great game that isn't my style.
But you don't a like a game, so for you the people who do are wrong. Grow up man, you are not alone in this world.
you can NOT compare Aions subscriptions to WoW's at this poiint. WoW has 11 million it's true, but it took them 2 expansions and five years to get there...Aion has about 3.5 mill, and it's not even released everywhere yet.

i agree . warcraft could only boast 3 million players at the start . at this point the only valid critisms can come from people who are playing on overseas servers . one weekends play in a lowbie area of the game is not enough time to form much of an opinion apart from whether you like the graphics/sounds or how smoothly the game plays .

I thought he meant that at first, but then, after reading through it a few times, what he means is that Aion has nothing in common with those games he lists, referring to them as "those great games of the past".
If you don't like anime style graphics, you won't like Aion. That pretty much sums up op's opinion. I DO like anime style graphics, have a level 18 chanter on us beta.
I love Aion so far. It's your standard mmo fair for sure, but it's done SO well.

God, seriousely, i cant do anything besides laughing my ass off, the dude claims "Aion is a bad game" because he personally doesnt like the animations and the sounds, yeah thats a really really good reason to vvhy the game is bad, because YOU dont fancy the graphics or the sounds Bravo!
I dont understand your comment...the first thing you see when you log in is....the graphics...
The game is all about immersion...the game has to be at least moderatly "believable" in order to play. That is why it is called a ROLE PLAYING GAME. In order to play your role you have to have some sense of disbelief in order to be a part of the environment.
I agree with the original poster...when I log into a game...the first thing I see is the visuals and sounds....it is the first thing i gather an opinion on. I played Champions beta and it has a comic book visual feel, some may think the Star War: Old Republic visuals need a change.
Wow turned me off the first moment i logged on.....the visuals were not not for me....it took me forever to get use to the garish look of some of LOTRO armor. UGH.
All these so-called reviewrs who seem to try and express a universal opinion when its really there own skewed vision, should just GTFO of the forums and ask there parents to re teach them the fundamentals of life. Somewhere along the way they were not taught what it means to have a personal opinion. Whats even more sad is there are some people on these forums who have never played the game but continue to give there impressions of it. Along with those people there are even some who just try and disuade people from playing it all because there afraid of something. What something is who knows. And you know who you are...

So, are you one of those people who identify yourself by what you play, and so somehow Aion is a threat to your masculinity because it's not "rough and tough" and "manly" enough for you?
To each their own, and you're entitled to your opinions of course. Aion obviously isn't for you.
For others who don 't suffer such hang-ups, don't need a video game to reinforce their manliness and aren't afraid their friends will make fun of them for playing a "colorful" (heaven forbid) game... with fantastical sound effects (oh no!) and choral music (the horror!)... I'm sure it's just fine.

I have a couple of issues with your post that I feel I need to assress here, OP. First, you are, of course, entitled to your opinion, but you really should take care to separate this from fact. The issues you have with Aion are indeed opinionated. They don't make Aion "bad." They are simply a point of dislike for yourself. A more fitting title for this thread could have been, "Why I Dislike Aion."
Secondly, and more importantly, I don't think you're giving this game enough time to present itself. To use WoW as an example, since it is so popular, boars in elwyn forest are far less menacing than core hounds in molten core. Go out and find some screenies of later content. The cuteness dissapates with time. The story in Aion, although it might not suit your personal taste, is solid and very well presented. Didi you play both factions? In my opinion, the Elyos faction affers a little more depth, but you don't get black wings and red glowing eyes.
In any case, it sounds like you already have your mind made up about this game which is sad, really, because there's much more to see and do beyond level 10. Try and give it a bit more time. As an artistically minded individual myself, I can certainly understand not liking a particular art style, and if that's your gripe, then unfortunately it won't change much, but it doesn't mean it's wrong. It simply means you don't like it.
NCsoft is publishing this game....that make is less useful than toilet paper in my opinion. I have never seen them release a game I like
I concur. Everything they handle, whether producing, publishing, etc. is overinstanced. None are true MMOGs.
I tend to agree. However I have not yet played Aion and am hopeful to be proved in the wrong.
I would say, for many people (myself included) that seeing it's an NC Soft game means that they WILL want to try it and will most likely play it.
This all just falls under personal taste.
NC Soft makes good games. They might not make games that you like, but they are very polished, the Artwork is of high value (though again, might not be to the liking of some) and they tend to focus on a few things and do them well enough to gather a strong following.
This to me means that they are doing something right.
Now, I do think NC Soft is an arrogant company in a few ways but It's not my company so it is what it is.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

QFT! I liked the Aion graphics and animations. Not everything in the world needs to be dreary wasteland.
Different people like different things. Just because the OP does not like the Art style means absolutely nothing about the quality of Aion's gameply which is pretty fun atm (note only in the preview so I was stopped at lvl 10).
The only NCSoft game it sort of resembles is Lineage2. And if you read anything about Aion, you would know it is nowhere near as instanced as any of the other NCSoft games....

Huh...I'm a manly guy and I'm finding myself really enjoying my first day in a very charming little game. There's something compelling about it.
Maybe it's the lack of Dwarves or Orcs.
