PvP is required for a good MMORPG, ofcourse you want quests but most of the people want to test their charcter againts otherplayers. at least i want to else whats the point of creating a kickass character.
Whatever, guys. This forum is ridiculous. Nobody can seem to have a friendly, intelligent conversation because too many people here like to throw around petty insults.
Thank you to those of you who had some good input.
I will defineately be on the pvp server. In any game that I've ever played I've just always been drawn to the danger. I like to accomplish things the hard way, I like knowing I can die any second, and I like being able to shut up 10 yr old brats whenever the hell I want to. I think I will love the pvp server.
Besides, the people that deserve to die on the pve servers just wont accept your duels. So you can never kill them. Anyoen that wants to be a little annoying child will be on the pve servers simply because they are invulnerable to you and can annoy the hell out of you, steal your kills, and do whatever they want without consequence.
What are you guys doing to me? I first wanted to join PvE due to the fact that I'll be working and in college so my playing time is VERY limited. Now all this talk of lamers and such on PvE is drawing me away from it...damnit, why can't I make up my mind.

You will never be able to participate in a raid unless you are on a pvp server. It is wiser to start on the pvp server before everyone has lvl 48 characters. Even as a casual gamer your friends should be able to keep you up to date and help you level.
You do not want to be on a server full of kill stealing selfish brats, I can gurantee you that.

You make a good point. I just don't want to get crushed by the people that don't work and droppped highschool/college for WoW (Trust me, they're out there) and never get a chance to level since I'll constantly be hunted. <sigh> I'm dropping the hammer; L.A.W. is going to join the PvP server.

Well, I promise you that you will be ganked, and often at that. But so will we all be. And if you stay with a group, then your odds of survival will be high, and you can always run if need be... I'm not saying that you wont be able to have fun. I mean chances are that there will not be anyone in your area that is able to attack you. Just those times do come, and if you're like me, you'll just suck it in and get back into the game. It's that added challenge that spices the game up a little. You'll be just fine on the pvp server

Former Stress Tester of the guild Stress Tester.
Also, I do agree with you about being at a bit of a disadvantage if you don't start on the PvP servers along with everyone else. That makes sense.
I don't think I'll make any final decision about it until I play the open beta. Then I'll have some experience from both types of servers to base my choice on.
In non-pvp servers you can't have mass raids on enemy towns because guards will just slaughter you. Which leaves you with only one type of true raiding->boss instances. And those won't get boring after the 100th time you've done the instance and killed the same boss with the same A.I.... Why pay for a game and play only half of it? The true challenge comes from fighting apponents who actually think, and use the techniques they have developed for their class during combat. I'm sure blizzards mob A.I. is good , but nothing compares to the creative thinking of humans.
I've heard non-pvp servers have "arenas" so people can show up and have little pvp matches. Great, what's the point of playing on a non-pvp server in the first place if you're just going to end up in a pvp arena? Carebears want to /duel when they know they'll win and it's convenient for them, /deny when they know they'll lose but don't have the guts to try.Sounds like a nice way to put you to sleep.
I am no blizzard fanboy. I never touched a warcraft series game. I have played starcraft and maybe I'm just crazy but to me it seems the whole point of the games are to basically dominate your apponents through strategic pvp. Not say "I'm going to collect mineral build towns and make soldiers and you can do the same but we won't attack eachother we'll just shake hands and hug". Essentially defeating the purpose of the true game to battle/pvp/war. It's 'WAR"-craft says it in the name. Not '/DUEL'-craft.
Edit: I bet none-pvp servers will have more of this "children-fanbase" everquest fanboys are talking about, due to the fact they can be as annoying as they want and no one can do anything but take it in the face.

Thanks for posting your opinions with a lot more substance and thought put into them. I appreciate it.
The only thing I really want to comment on there is that there ARE mass raids on enemy towns on the PvE servers. I've read a few discussions about them on the beta forums and looked at screenshots. Basically if enough people participate, they can take the guards out and they won't respawn for a bit. I've seen some fun looking slaughterfest shots from situations like this.
Whether it goes against the style of Warcraft or not, the truth is that PvP in many games turns into nothing but a gank/grief fest and that's really not the way that Blizzard...or most of the players for that matter, want the game to be.
It seems to me that Blizzard's PvP system is going to be very intricate and rewarding. If there are enough checks in place to prevent it from turning into a massive gank fest with the higher levels attacking lower level players just for the fun of it, then it'll be worth looking into. Perhaps playing on PvE is cowardly, but what is it when you kill players that are much lower level than them? It's certainly not a fair fight. Just as cowardly, perhaps?
My fiance is still mostly wanting to play on PvE. If I enjoy the PvP servers during the open beta, I'll more than likely have a main character on PvE with him and a different character on a PvP server. I usually get to put in a little more play time than he does anyway.
Thanks for the input, everyone. Lots of good opinions on PvP and it's certainly something I'm willing to give a try now.

*#&$# I just typed all this stuff and it didnt post, awesome.
Thats cool that you can have village raids on pve servers, you just have to get gms to make it an event saught of, by taking out the guards and what not. But it sounds like that kinda kills some of the essentials of raiding, such as the surprise tactic of invading a village when the enemy has no idea. But still, if you are eventually going to wind up raiding villages why not just start out on a pvp server and not go through the hassle?
Yes, I agree, crushing lower level players in cowardly. But wow has taking care of that through their honor code system, where attacking a lower level character will penalize you. I'm not tottally the malicious a$$hole everyone prob thinks I am through reading my thoughts about pvp. Yes I am pvp bloodthirsty, but I still go by my very own honor code reguardless. I try to keep pvp battles as clean, trash-talk, griefing, free as possible. Usually if someone devistates me in a fight, I compliment them on their skill. Overall making me just want to get better and better as a player. That is me however I can not vouch for other players.
I know first hand about grief-fests from playing EQ. 5+ hour corpse runs after being trained/corpse camped/ganked etc. It is horrific. But that's eq/daoc/Lineage II etc. , this is wow. They are trying hard to balance pvp and make it fun. And from what I've seen they have done a really great job. Hopefully they will change the idea in people that pvp just turns into totall all out griefing fests.
Hope to see everyone on the battlefield, by my side or under my axe
Big fan of PVP here, but after experiencing the PVP severs for DAoC, Ill stick with the pve-pvp consentual servers. Main reason being, I just wanna have fun and I dont want to have to "work" this game as I have in the past to level up the fastest just so I can be at an equal or greater level of the other peeps out there. Goin to take my time, enjoy the new environment... and when the time comes for me to pvp... watch your backs, cuz it'll be on! lol

I will agree with you that often you will see gank squads and whatnot but you must keep in mind that those gankers have to be alone at some point in time and that they have chosen to risk themselves just as much as others have. And I assure you that nearly anyone inside a pvp server will know how to handle himself in intense situations. If 4 characters appear in front of me with intentions of killing me I may do a few things. I could run. I could kill off one of them and feel satisfied with that, I could log out, I could call in my friends and do a group vs group thing. Poeple get on these servers knowing that they will be ganked on serveral occasions, knowing that they will be killed in fair battles on several occasions, and they know that they take the risk of dying at any point in time. This just adds spice to the game. Sure the odds of winning may be unjust, or impossible, but its still nice to know that these occasions can happen.
I am also a strong believer in that the majoriity of the player base is more interested in pvp than pve. There is no denying the thrill of competing with others that are just as smart, or maybe even smarter than you. Most games have a playerbase more centered around pve, I will agree to that. in all mmorpgs ive played i played PvE (only cuz that was the only mode available :P) but from wat ive heard, seen, and thought about, i think WoW PvP is gonna be awesome, and its more competitive than PvE, so ya im gonna join pvp. I kinda agree with the opening post, about how PvE is better for experimenting classes/races etc. But, to me, i might not play after OB finishes, i HOPE i can pay and stuff, but if i dont, im gonna rush in and make a char on PvP right wen i get on WoW OB, besides, ive already planned my char out pretty well
One thing I am very pleased with about WOW is that you wont have the wimps powerlevel to 40 on a pve server and then transfer to a pvp. I hated that about MU. If you dont' have the guts to hack it out from the start, and grow just like everyone else, than don't do it at all
