Hey Guys,
AoC had a rocky start (which honestly a lot fot he big named MMO's have, including WoW and WAR). A lot of the angry player base are American gamers who got spoiled by easier MMO's that have been around for years and had time to polish the bugs. They're inevitable. Funcom has spent the last year since release fixing bugs and the stability of the game, implementing DirectX 10, itemization, as well as new content to round out the middle and later levels.
If you are thinking of playing AoC here's some advice. Don't read threads that bash the game or hate it. All I can say is if you're interested just try it out. Don't let my opinion (love it) or the opinion of others cloud your judgement. Try it out and see what you think for yourselves. I did even after reading the basher/hater posts...and guess what I play AoC now instead of WoW or WAR or EQ2. Get your own opinion from your own experiences.

honestly, i dont wanna have to deal with the kind of player who makes his opinion based on some thread written by a guy who actually didnt play the game at all or did play it for 3 hours yesterday and is comming today to give the "elder of the eldest expert" advice to others...
i dont wanna have those kind of players on games that i play nor as guild mates, those kind of players always ruin the experience cause they only follow the herd...
Exactly, clearSam just won my heart!
Well his post is basically, "Don't let anyones opinion good or bad cloud your judgment, and make a decision for yourself." Just letting you guys know in case you didn't bother to read his thread before bashing him.
The thing is that trying it out you'll mostly be experiencing Tortage, but is that a good representation of the game post-Tortage? I did the 7-day trial and made it out of Tortage and had a great time with it. But I'm just a bit uncertain about subscribing because I don't know what the real game will be like. And once I got into the area after Tortage it was pretty empty of players. I think I only ran across one other player. But by that time my 7 days were up.
Depends on the server you are on, honestly. I play on Wiccana, which is very populated, so there are people all over the place even in the mid-level zones. Personally, I'm loving the zones outside of Tortage. I've experienced the early zones for Cimmeria and Stygia, and they are fantastic. I'm an explorer for the most part though, and Tortage didn't fulfill that need for me. Exploring Howard's world is one of my favorite parts of the game.
To keep the thread on track, though, I agree with the OP. I avoided AoC for a long time due to feedback from friends who bought it. I'm glad I waited so long, so they could fix a lot, but I'm also glad that I gave it a shot despite their comments. I'm getting a lot of enjoyment from it so far.

My friend actually convinced me to pick this game up yesterday. So far I'm not too impressed. I definitely like the voice overs in the quests and the graphics. The walk and the jump animation (not really a big deal) looks horribly done IMO. I'm also not a fan of the maps and the icons on them.
I feel that the combat is pretty stupid so far. I'm not quite sure why I have to press the arrow key after an attack that only allows you to attack in one direction. It makes more sense to just press one button and know which direction it will be going. I understand where they were going with this, but it would've been better if you had the choice of which direction the attack will be going. Maybe there are spells/attacks later that allow you to choose any direction, but I haven't seen it yet. I'm only level 8, so I really can't say how I feel about the game.
While I can't help your opinion of the walk and jump animations, nor the map appearance, I can shed some light on the combos.
The combos are multi-hit attacks resulting in a more powerful final blow. When you hit the combo button, you take an initial swing in a given direction, not necessarily the same direction as the follow up attacks to finish the combo, which results in a final attack which is typically the direction shown on the combo itself. Later, you will get combos which require you to hit multiple directions to finish them.
You definitely need to get out of Tortage before you form an opinion of the game. I know it's hard, because getting out of there can take some time, and other games have much faster early character development, but it's worth it. By the time you get out of there, you will have a fair amount of combos/spells, and things will probably make more sense.

Prax, thanks for the info. Sadly, my impression of this game is still not good. Regardless of if the game is good or not, the community is probably the worst I've ever seen. General chat consists of people flaming each other, screaming about how the game sucks, which game is better, yelling at people asking questions and calling them noobs, and god knows what else. I honestly thought WoW's community was the worst, but this is it. I have never seen such an unfriendly community in any game I've played.
Edit: It might be the server I chose, though.
I guess that`s what happens when former haters join in and start fighting with the ones that have been playing since Beta and such. Its totally normale. And when it comes to community, I have the very best experience in my own guild on a RP-pvp server. Alot of people think RP servers = forced to roleplay! But here is the surprise, none in my guild does it, we are just a little more civilized and villing to negotiate where needed. Things like that make a guild better then random zerg waves imo.
I had fun in WOW also, but that was pre TBC. I have never regretted leaving WOW actually at that time, and I will enjoy AoC for quite some more time. Do as you please, but don`t judge a community over global chat rage, everything can happen in global from hour to hour. I have even had interesting discussions in global with random players before.
The thing is, the whole time I played I never noticed anybody being civil in global chat. New guys are asking simple questions and everybody is laughing at them calling them noobs, and to use google. I'm the type that will usually look something up online instead of asking in chatl; but I have no problems with people who do ask in game. Why would you treat new players like shit? The game isn't doing that great as it is. Why would you want to drive away any potential new players?
Like I said, though. It's probably the server I chose (Tyranny), and I can't say if it's like this on other servers. All I know is, I don't like people that act like assholes in RL. I sure as hell don't want to spend my time online with these fools.
If you want a harsh environment with gankers, namecallers and generally a lot of degrading filth; Tyranny is the US server you are looking for, and Fury is the EU one. This is no secret.
Heh, Tyranny yes, thats the PvP server right? On EU servers, Fury is that kinda place, and I might have fit in there with that bunch like 10 years ago, but today? No way! For me its either PvE or Rp-pvp because I seem to find more adult people hanging there. A few days ago in Noble District there was a guy that killed me over and over, and when I refused to partake anymore, he come up to me, and offered me lessons and training in PvP since I had little skill with my mid lvl BS. It was fun, and I could never imagine this happening on any other kind of server almost. Also he was polite, just like I am when talking to others.
My tip to you, try a PvE og RP-PvP server. It might just be the place you need.
I'd love to, sadly they revoked the free trial and I'm not going to buy before I try in this case.
One thing I could never understand is why Conan - in all the game artwork - looks like he has fetal alcohol syndrome???
I understand a community can be a bit...harsh, sometimes. I jump between two characters really. I have my necro on Cimmeria (RP-PvP) and my guard on Wiccana (PvE). Both have great community but there is an ugly side to them.
Just last night on Wiccana a guy was CAPS vocalizing his opinion of the game and how he hated it. But when it came down to why he hated it was when the flame war started. And it seemed like the entire global community on Wiccana was up in arms bashing this guy for basically hating the game for the dumbest reasons. He hated the combo system for combat and he said the graphics were horrible other than those two it was mostly just I hate this and I hate that". It was still going when I logged. But I was so amazed about how fierce then entire community was at defending their game. I sat in Old Tarantia the entire time reading it as it happened.
Sometimes it just depends ont eh server really. I notice that the PvP servers tend to be a bit more brutal but that's almost RPish regardless if it's a RP-PvP server or not. In teh world of Conan if you're weak you die. And that seems to be the mentality of the servers, which is completely understandable.
But when it comes to new player they have a New Player Help channel, which I have a chat tab devoted too because when I started out that's how I communicated during my time in Tortage. I think they should change the color of the New Player Help chat lines so that they can be distinguished in the general tab but then you would have people using it as an alert system for whatever reasons. But I try to be helpful whether it's a new player or a returning one. And every server is going to have handfuls of those types.
No matter what game you go to there are going to be lighter and darker sides to the community. It's never going to go away and it's something we just learn to deal with and ignore. At the same time it's up to the community, really, to police their own. I personally feel that if I see someone bashing another player just for asking a question I will tell the basher to stop being a douchnugget and then I will try to help the person with the question.
Tyranny has some truly great pvpers. However, the gankage and general attitude level is simply unbelieveable. I prefer my nice pve home of Wiccana.
I can't agree on this. It's one thing to have an aggressive attitude while PvPing, it's another to just be an ass all the time. I'm still playing AoC, and somewhat enjoying it. Global chat is still the same, and hasn't changed since I started playing. I would reroll on another server, but my friend doesn't want to leave Tyranny.
Here is another example of what people are like on this server. I was talking on the phone while standing on a square. About 6 people surround me and start saying something like "You fuckin n00b! Get off the square! What are you scared, NOOB?" Not only were they dickheads, they were a few levels above me, and they knew I didn't stand a chance. They didn't leave until a new "noob" came and they harassed him.
I understand this is a PvP server, and I don't really have a problem getting ganked. You don't have to show me respect in PvP, but I expect respect as a person. There is no need to get verbal when you can just kill me and laugh about it with your friends. I don't feel that showing respect to people is a sign of weakness at all. It's just being mature.
Anyway, like I said in an earlier post, this is my first FFA PvP MMO I've played. I'm definitely not used to being around a bunch of assholes. This type of game may not be for me, but I'm still playing and giving it a fair chance. The community just irritates me.
Oh, don't get me wrong. I understand this. It's just that this is the worst I've ever seen. I'm sure if WoW or WAR had cross faction communication it would be just as bad. You guys have me considering whether to roll on a RP-PvP server in the next game I play. I'm just worried all the true RPers will get mad since I don't RP.
I just came back to AoC after buying a new system, and I am absolutely loving it. I let my WoW subscription run out and I can't see me ever going back. Hello to any Wiccana players!
Or ...it could be possible that you have extremely poor taste in games.

Let's just all play what you play then...ok?

Hello! I just madea new guy on Wiccana level 16 BS called Urartu see you around Packed out, never seen the server so busy before. I think the more people upgrade their systems over time the more longevity is there. Sure is an experience on a decent system.

I'll add you to friends
i just picked up the game over the weekend. never have played it b4 did read all the bad reviews at launch and recently checked into it to see what progress had been made. i liked what i was reading and was inbetween games so i figured what the hell.
i have to say im really liking it so far. graphics are AWESOME so is the music. combat is good like the combo system, and the blood is great, very brutal! im sure itll get alot better once i get out of tortage. i prolly could have picked a better server though was kinda dead, but i didnt want all the gankers and haters ruining it for me first time out.
Games played:Warhammer, Atlantica, Vanguard, Tabula Rasa, Guild Wars, DDO, City of Heroes/Villians, Aion, and Global Agenda...
Games playing: Age of Conan & EVE
Games waiting for: SWTOR
do yourself a favor, reroll on another server before you get too deep in.
if your playing the NA version choose wiccana for pve or crimmeria for pvp
wiccana is the unofficial rp server, so youll find lots of rp guilds, as well as mature guilds, and kiddie guilds as well.
from experience, leveling on the pve servers is really fast. on the pvp server youll need a lot more thought and effort to level, and will get distracted often by pvpers.
crimmeria(the rp-pvp server) isnt too bad if you have a guild, and if you travel and level in hot spots with a good group. its not as rp focused as wiccana, despite its classification as rp. not to say there isnt rp on crimmeria, just it appears that wiccana has a lot more rp guilds recruiting.
the pve server was fun and relaxing, but compared to the pvp servers, its lacking in excitement. on the pve server i could quest till i ding, on the pvp server i would quest and end up in some epic pvp brawl. there is ganking but its not too bad, and everyone who has griefed me or people around me, usualy get their ass handed to them once word gets out they are griefing.
either way, i think youll enjoy a populated server much more in the long run than a low pop server....unless you like the small tight nit communities.
