Darkfall north America server comes out today. The Euro server has been more like a paid beta period, but all hell is going to break loose once the NA1 server opens up.
Will you fight for personal power? For respect? Will you fight to protect the innocent and PK the gankers? The race is on as everyone starts from square one on a fresh server to stake their claims on the land, and forge alliances to hold those claims. There are no rules, so you get to make the rules.
Never since the days of classic UO or AC darktide have we seen such epic free form PvP. And back then they didn't have all the ability to build up their own towns, forts, naval fleets, siege machines, or ride into battle on mount.
Hardcore PvP the way it was meant to be. I'm pumped. *Breaks a chair over his back* LETS DO THIS! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbpccXp6Swo

You forgot Shadowbane, and we all know how well that worked out.
Shadowbane's problem was never a failure of design, but a failure of technology. They took too long to get the issues sorted out after release, and the engine was simply too dated to draw in new players.
EVE proves that there is a market out there for hardcore PvP games based around building up an empire and fighting over it.
Will you fight for the best offline macro cheat?
FFA PvP will never work in anything but UO.
Go find a free shard running on the t2a siege perilous rule set and give up now.
Back then we did build up our own towns and forts and road into battle on mounts.
Back then we faught for our Faction and battled fiercely for control of the land.
I will be forming an anti-guild and coalition. We will raid and destroy afk macroers. Will hunt down and kill the red tagged gankers. We will establish a sancturary city from which like minded individuals can operate safely from by pledging the same oath of justice.
The game is what you want to make of it. You can do anything. I choose to wage war on them rather than complain about them.
Besides, teamwork and numbers trump higher skills any day.
And so too, you will again, in Darkfall. Join us displaced UO brother. This is our home now.
Will you play to be ganked? to be flamed all over the place on the forums? to be scammed by tasos? Will you fall into this fail attempt of marketing?
Like fighter combat, there are only two kinds of players in a PvP world: Hunters and Targets.
Do you have what it takes to be a hunter in a world full of hunters? That's where real skill, teamwork, and leadership come into play.
Well, I wish you luck in getting reemed by the hackers/exploiters/macroers.
I will fight to scrape up any sort of interest in this half-baked MMO, period.
Katsma is Lithuanian for 'he who drinks used douche fluid'.
DF is a game for carebear PK's. There is no point in even having the alignment system other than to keep the carebears out of the starting towns. Change the alignment sytem and alot of the "suck" in this game will disappear. My lil sister is a PK in DF. If your a "red" in this game it's because you suck too much not to be. Fix the alignment..get rid of the carebears...then talk about "true" pvp to us. My opinion.
See you in the dream..
The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.
Except in the case where the smart person infiltrates your little coalition and plunders the hell out of it.
Sure, you can out zerg anyone, but anyone can undermine a mob with good planning
will definitly give it a try, granted a trial/openbeta/preview weekend, or any try it before you buy it option is there.
i will not drop $50 or whatever the box is to find out the game is a heavily macroed game, or a game with nothing else to do but gank.
i remember people talking about this game being skill based (like attack skills) and not equipment based, making full loot pvp acceptable...is this true?
also, this isnt a use it to skill it game...is it? like marrowind, where i stood in a room spamming my skills to level them?
i had a lot of fun playing war, am having a blast playing aoc, might as well make it a hat trick with all the "biggest failues ever created" mmorpgs...they all seem not as bad as everyone makes them out to be, ill assume that will be true for this game too.
Darkfall is, simply put, the best PVP MMO going available today. I will never go back to a MMO that has auto-targeting again.
And that's really pitiful when you consider how buggy the game is and how outdated the graphics are....
And that's really pitiful when you consider how buggy the game is and how outdated the graphics are....
WOW has some of the most outdated graphics around, doesn't stop it being popular. And buggy, wth? Darkfall is less buggy than both AoC and WAR, and I played both. I am yet to have the Darkfall client crash on me.
They fixed bugging mobs through walls, so they won't be getting killed by the macroers at the very least until 3 months in when they're allowed to transfer. As for hackers, yeah they're going to get raped by hackers. Darkfall is pretty broken, but I guess I'd have to agree that it's the best PvP MMORPG to date. It irks me though that Aventurine promises so much, and they half-ass everything they implement. They're so great at building up a pile of shit to look like it's incredible. Just look at the expansion...
Don't drop $50 on Darkfall then, because it is most definitely a heavily macroed game (in fact this is the only way to compete), and there is absolutely nothing to do but PvP. There are none of the intricacies in crafting, city building, or character building that would make the game fun, everything is bland and very generic, there is little variety, and the developers have resorted to providing artificial rewards for PvP in adding the villages, rather than having a natural scarcity and much variety to give players a reason to actually conquer cities and go out to kill people. If there were 2 - 3 places where players could obtain rare ores, it would naturally draw conflict. But instead the devs are reduced to providing artificial rewards like gold for holding a village for a certain amount of time to actually make people fight.
This.
I normally don't do one word posts... but... This.
ALL YOUR PLAYER BASE ARE BELONG TO KITTY!
And that's really pitiful when you consider how buggy the game is and how outdated the graphics are....
IT's true though. Best 3d avatar mmorpg pvp game ever made for pvp lovers. And it's still horrible in so many ways. All they did was add a small insignificant point to pvp. Yes the pvp is both better and more fun than DOAC, which was the best at giving an illiusion of a point. My opinion doac fans!!
Eve is still the king, but its more like playing a single unit in an rts. The combat is great or mindnumbing simple. No in between really. DF's pvp is good, funny or stupid. But both games have a reason, which is all you really need. DF is missing some major real world consequences to be anything beyond sucking the least at pvp. It's not getting ganked over and over that makes people leave, it's seeing the same guy who ganked them back in town 20 minutes later. It's not that you cant fight back when people come kill the 2 day old players, its that you can;t fight back without hitting their group mate who has good alignment without going rogu because he just runs in front of you until you hit em .It's not that they dont want to join a guild, its that you can't find any that havent killed you using cheese. The alignment system blows. Not crying cause i died. But its easy to see why people dont stick around longer.
Alignment should be everything if you're gonna have alignment. Going rogue is a playstyle for the elite. In DF its something to do one night or a way to compensate. It's for carebears.
Sorry for the rant. I love 50% of the game. The other 50% Sucks ass..and it can mostly be traced back to the alignment system. And this is after they made it better. before you could pretty much kill anyone you saw without any penalty. I say either remove alignment or repair it. As it is now it serves the rogue player more. Then we can have some true pvp. The mass pvp is just as cheese as well, but what do you expect when the alignment encourages cheese everywhere else.
BUt still id rather play this game than any AAA diablo clone for 100th time. DING!! GRATZ!!
See you in the dream..

You really don't need to macro anymore. The expansion has made PVE and PVP as fast to skill up as hiding inside a city and macroing stuff. Gathering skills are on auto now as well, the game allows you to keep chopping a tree and go AFK for some coffee and you keep chopping, which can be handy.
But really, things like regionally-unique resources and overall sandbox depth is going to come, it's just going to be added gradually, like any sandbox. EVE when it came out was pretty shallow too, it's taken 5 years and a dozen expansions to get to where it is today.
The reassuring thing about Darkfall I guess is that the core game of PVP and conquest is really good, the political and diplomatic side of the game is in full swing and very engaging, and the world is large and well-made enough to support the growth of new content. This is the opposite of the more common situation where a new MMO comes out with a lot of initial content but the core game is pretty lacking (*cough* WAR *cough*). As you said though, some things in Darkfall are outstanding, and other things are like placeholders for a future upgrade. For any player who's into PVP though, it's certainly worth trying, you'll either love it or hate it.
So, seeing as how Aventurine is calling it a MMORPG what sort of non-combat RPG elements are there? Are there social places like taverns in big cities in which to sit and interact with people? How well is chat implemented? Is the game population receptive to a spirit of roleplay, where characters are named plausibly? Do I stand a chance of initiating a bit of parley with a would-be attacker, or would I just be treated like a white guy walking down the sidewalk in Compton wearing Versace?

You, sir, are the winning poster of this thread. That was funny.
oohh you mena your going to play a FPS which is true pvp?
Sorry but I don't care about that stuff. It's not good having a great chat window if the core game is ass. As for RPG I don't care much about sitting in virtual chairs exchanging IMs with someone, I would rather be out PVPing on my shulgan drake and talking in vent. Besides, if you like that stuff, I have found tons of nice ruins, abandonned forts, and underground caverns that would be nice for roleplayers /shrug. sandbox game is sandbox, do whatever turns you on.
