Now on EVE online when I go PVP stuff actually goes down... If my fleet fails then we lose our ships and can be PKd, if the other side/contender fails they lose the same.

The only reason that's so common in EvE is their entire economy is based around people replacing ships, people have to regularly lose their ships or the entire economy would collapse.  Even if you're PK'd there, you still don't really 'die', you come back as a clone with all of your skills.  If you want a real PK system, the first time you die, your character vanishes forever and you start over completely at square one.

Bet nobody would ever PvP if that was the case.

That depends if it was worth it.  Say there was a 10k prize for any player who had the highest kill totals for the year. I"m sure people would try it then, or if they got some other reward which would make them internet/gaming famous. People eat bugs and old donkydicks on fear factor just to win a little bit of money and humiliate themselves on other shows for fame,  I doubt a hardcore death system could be worse.

Besides, didn't Diablo have a hardcore mode that your character only had one life?

That's because people are stupid.  But sure, if you want to bring RL into it, if you are undefeated for the year, you get $10k.  If you lose, even once, they cancel your account and keep any remaining monthly fee that you've paid.  Why should you get an RL reward if you don't potentially lose anything?  They can pay the reward at the end of the year out of whatever confiscated monies they make.

    Want to play?

Real life money was just one idea. WoW paid money to players for their arena tournaments and e-sports aren't exactly fictional.

But way to exaggerate, and conveniently ignore the rest of that comment where I say " OR SOME OTHER REWARD". It could be a spotlight on a webpage or something as simple as placing that person's character in game as a permanent fixture like an NPC or a quest basedaround them.

I only suggested that if companies wanted to implement a single life aspect to characters they could if they made the risks worthwhile to the player.  But feel free to jump off the deep end again.

I found PVP usually very boring. Sounds odd, but I have not seen any MMO PVP which was not very repetitve and single-minded. Usually the decisive factors is numbers. Who has more wins. Its simple as that. I haven't seen much strategy in WOW, WAR, AoC or whatever PVP I tried. Sure, it was some adrenaline rush, but take WAR. Every keep is the same. Ram door 1, ram door 2, run up ramp, kill boss. *yawn* You can only do that so often until it gets boring. It's all just a limited and single minded thing. No story, no secrets to discover, just hack on each others. Unlike war in strategy games, it is usually quite non strategic, basically because everyone does what he wants, and you can't make a "general" who orders some decend strategies. People won't do what they are told, so the idea will never work, and it will never be more than a hackfest and the winner is the side with more numbers and more people who can stay up into the night. See WAR. Keeps where usually conquered by those who could play until 3 AM. XD

Two of those were faction/RvR war, so I can see why you found it boring. I'd say check out EVE Online, Ikariam (browser MMO), or even Puzzle Pirates if you are interested in experiencing strategy, tactics, diplomacy and politics to combat. But I do agree with you that most MMOs offer repetitive, shallow and meaningless PvP.

To me the ultimate challenge in these games is allways PvP, especially against different enemies every time, cause then you don't see their weaknesses by observing them over several battles. To me that's alot more thrilling to win a PvP battle.

Haven't read the whole thread, so I don't know if it has already been brought up...

    But...

I find that PvP becomes just as repetitive and often just as predictable as PvE once I start playing it with the same amount of effort that I put into PvE. Sure, there are more factors involved that can affect things in theory, but I just don't see it too often thanks to FOTM classes/builds/gear/ability rotations etc. Especially things like WoW BGs are notoriously predictable in how they play out, although some argue that's not real PvP hehe.

In the end, PvE is far more relaxing to me since I can take my time and all that. PvP on the other hand always require full attention all the time since getting killed over and over isn't all that fun in the long run (although a close defeat is certainly more entertaining to me than an easy win). PvP is awesome when I have the energy and focus for it, but to be honest, I play MMOs mostly to relax, so that's why I prefer PvE.
