My 3 most anitipated MMORPGs

Final Fantasy XIV

Nobuo Uematsu.  This name alone is enough for me.  When you add the pedigree of Square Enix on top of that you know that you are in for a top quality title.  This title will be PS3 and PC.  I hope they make significant improvements to the UI for the PC version, Final Fantasy XI's interface was designed for a console in mind so the PC version was a bit clunky.

Chamions Online

Massive Character Customization.  Nemesis system.  What I'm worried about is the depth of gameplay.  City of Heroes had extremely weak and repetitive gameplay, overuse of instances, "dungeons' that were all t he same, and it got quite boring fast.  I'm afraid of some of this going into Chamions Online.  Also consider that this is an 'action' oriented MMO, in other words an all combat MMO, I fear that there would be little or no other content that would keep me interested.  I just watched some of the new PVP arena videos and I'm not impressed.  It looks like a UFC ring, and is quite uninspired.  No villains at launch (likely an expansion).  This is also being planned to be released on the 360.  Will that put limitations on the PC version?  I also consider the cash shop as a negative overall.  There is already a monthly subscription rate, why should I have to pay again for content?

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic MMO

Bioware.  Fully voiced over.  This isn't going to be anything like pre NGE SWG.  For me this is a massive drawback.  This is another 'action' combat oriented MMO and it seems they are leaving little room for anything else.  I have read it will be heavily story oriented, but good stories are not about hacking and slashing your way through hordes of Sith.  MMO(RPGS) should be much more than that and you should be able to create your own story through your character.

I don't really understand why you think Final Fantasy XIV is going to be good just because of its music composer, but Final Fantasy XIV is not only on Playstation 3. it's for Playstation 3 and PC.

I wouldn't worry about any drawbacks, the Playstation 3 is quite a powerful system.

I've corrected my post.  Yes, FFXIV will be PS3 and PC.  If you are familiar with Nobuo Uematsu's work you know what I mean.  It also shows me that Square Enix is putting some care and love into this title by asking the worlds greatest video game music composer to do the entire game's music.  There aren't much details out yet for the game, but Square Enix has a reputation for quality titles and high production values.  This is enough for me to be very, very excited about this game.

I think it is safe to say most of us list SWToR as one of our top three most anticipated.  I don't disagree with you there.  However, Final Fantasy and Champions Online?  I think Star Trek is probably even above those two even with their hiccups so far.  I suppose in my opinion I would have to say that Mortal Online is pretty fascinated, even though it is FPV which is really lame IMO.  Still, the concept of sandbox, player owned houses, player driven economy, and risk PvP are enough to keep me hitting up their website from time to time.

I wish I could get into Final Fantasys, as I use to love them.  But they have been so, well, I don't know how to put it in PC terms but overtaken by the Asian culture of game design that I can't enjoy them anymore.  Perhaps the new MMO will be worth a look though:)

Final Fantasy is probably one of the biggest mmorpgs

Final Fantasy XI has around 500.000 subscribers according to SE.

Thats more than Everquest had at its peak.

The only one out of those three that I'm curious about is KOR. I've never been able to get into the FF series neither the mmo or the single player games.

As for Champions, it seemed interesting to me at first but the more I read about it the more it doesn't appeal to me. I hate rmt concepts in games and unless I misunderstood this game is going to have a monthly payment and a cash shop? That seems ridiculous to me. Even if it is just fluff items which is open to debate based on the interview I read with Roper wtf?  Buying the game and paying a monthly fee isn't enough?  Seems like a ripoff to me.

As for KOR, I'm curious because I love Bioware games and most of what I've read piques my interest.  My only concern is how solo oriented it might be and as to whether for once a company is going to live up to the promises it says a game is going to have or it ends upbeing a bunch of hot air.

Not really in the mood to get Funcomed again.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Real life brings repetition and pointlessness too. The only thing real life offers is Great graphics. Its kinda expensive too and way to dependent on the cash shop. Totally pay to win as well. No thank you. Ill stick to my games.

Are those 500K U.S. and European subscribers?  I have serious doubts about that number not including Eastern subs too.  EQ was primarily as U.S. game with a small following in Europe and almost none from the Eastern bloc.

I'm sure that FFXIV will have great appeal in the East, not likely to be that much of a hit in the West since it's trying to be more hardcore than casual.

Assuming none of these end up going sub plus micro transaction, I'm looking forward to SW: TOR and DC Universe Online and Star Trek Online.  Champions would have been the 4th, but it's been confirmed to be subscription plus micro transaction.

With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal

Final Fantasy XIV and Jumpgate Evolution. I really don't have a third game lol. Nothing else otw looks really interesting to me.

  • warhawk95warhawk95 Member Posts: 1

i would have to agree that SW does look intresting but my only fear with it is that bioware will focus too much on the story and not end content, but i do feel that both are equally importan for a theme park type mmo. my other two would be MO just because it looks kick@$$ and final fantasy XIV because well its final fantasy. but i must say that aion has caught my intrest as of late

  • lornphoenixlornphoenix Member Posts: 993

    currently

    1) aion

    2) Jumpgate

    For me it would be

    1 Aion

    2 Guild Wars 2

    3 Final Fantasy XIV

  • ZippyZippy Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 1,412

    1.  FF14

    2.  Blizzard's new MMO

    3.  SWTOR

    4.  NCsoft's unnanounced title

    5.  HoT

Besides these 5 games there are no other major announced big budget MMO's in development.  It is pretty much impossible to make a non PvP MMO with any type of quality content without a minimum $25 million dollar budget.  Even with that much and more most games under achieve expectations.  Yes there was Eve.  But for every Eve there are 100 Darkfall's and Darklight.  The 5 games above are the future of western MMO's.  I guess one could add in Start Trek and the Agency into the mix.  But SOE is so cheap and put sout such bad products I can't see them investing any meaningful amount in any game that does not have EQ int he title.  Hopefully out of the above 5 games we will get one or two decent  quality games.

For small budget games I would add:

    6.  Wheel of Time being developed by Red Eagle Games.  Being that they are connected with EA might mean they have a large sized budget.

    7.  Alganon  Likely it will do very badly but I am a fan of David Allen

I am awaiting Champions Online, despite the RMT issue I will give it a try.  Also there is a game by White Wolf that includes stuff like Vampires Masquerade - forget the name, forgive me I am old - that looks good, if it ever gets off the ground.  MO looks good, but I cannot afford it.

Actually one of the few things square has said about FFXIV is that it's going to be geared more toward casual play than FFXI was.  With more ability and content for solo players.
