Gordon: We will definitely have crafting.

STO has crafting - what the devs call crafting, anyway. No one else calls it crafting.

Rich: The core classes we'll start off with will be based off or heroic, combat oriented experiences ... Star Wars, right? We are going to have crafting, because that's a big part of MMOs. We're going to implement crafting in a way that 'feels' right for Star Wars. For the longest time we struggled with that. You know, crafting at its heart is not really what the universe is about.

Not a good sign. People don't build things in the SW universe? Hmm - tell that to Han Solo.

But one of the designers came up with a great idea, which I can't talk about because it's not implemented yet, of how to incorporate crafting into Star Wars without forcing a hero to do something that's very non-heroic.

    So - crafting is "non-heroic".

    But...

What about the tradition of Jedi crafting their own lightsabers?

Rich: With the way that MMOs work, gaining and upgrading loot over levels, you're not going to end the game with the same lightsaber you started with. That might mean a succession of different lightsabers ...

James Olen, Studio Creative Director:  Yeah, our game is about loot.

    WoW! How rare and unusual!

"our game is about loot. "

There are things in our game that as you progress you definitely can tell a new player from a high-level player

End-game maybe focus on Raid-or Die again???

There is nothing in those quotes that made me optimstic about the game.

It sounds a lot like WoW with a SW skin.

Well they do keep saying they have something different than typical MMO crafting up their sleeve. What I expect is something similar to KOTOR. Tinkering I guess would best describe it, think a slicer in SWG. Upgrading weapons with scopes grips etc.. Upgrading armor with heavier meshes, clothing with stealth generators so on and so forth. Which IMO would definitely fit into a SW environment. Han Solo "I've made a lot of special modifications myself" I think in expanded lore he's also modified his Dl44. They want Iconic and that's iconic I guess.

They've stated often that its going to be a player driven economy. Crafting will be there because it's required in a 'good MMO'. That is what they are aiming for remember.

Yeah as a jedi you need to construct a saber. It's part of the jedi training and there may well be a mission when you need a new lightsaber, so they have you scouting Tython for resources and a Crystal. Should be interesting. Just because Bioware plan to deliver on the new, doesn't mean they aren't given you the old too. Thats what those old MMO employees were hired for. They will cover that, Bioware will work their magic on the content.

Longing for Skyrim, The Old Republic and Mass Effect 3
