I paid early with the knowledge that they might not deliver. Historically, most MMO's do not deliver what they promise really. I am a fan of this niche of MMO's though, and can spare the money to support it. Even if the reviews and reports are bad upon release, I would still feel obligated to try it for myself out of sheer curiosity.
Being able to take a sneak peek into the beta just gives me more time to decide if I should drop other games to focus on this full-time on release, or if it won't be worth diving into so hard.
I already had a Block A box reserved which I hadnt paid for until yesterday, after some discussion with my guild mates that have bought it, I decided I would just go for it and bought the Block A box and... .
Edit: edited some bits cause im not sure what really MMORPG moderators will see as NDA violation.
I am also stuck with a box version for block B because I couldn't take it out of the basket after I was just medling around with the market. I have already bought a Digital download version but now the wait for Block C is getting unbearable. I`m seriously thinking of finalizing my order for the Boxed Version and use it to login to Block B...

I just think it's kind of a shame that they don't have the resources to support giving everyone who's purchased a copy access to the beta from the day they purchase it.
It's a real turn off for a company to expect me to pay for an unfinished product, and not even allow me to participate in the testing of that product.
I know when you order it before release, you get 'free access' to upgrades and everything in the future, but for all we know at this moment, there might never be any upgrades. The whole game could come crashing down after 3 months, the developers could go broke, and the promised extras for buying before release could never eventuate.
From a business perspective, it just cries out 'cash flow problems', especially now that they've moved the beta entry back for so many people. They're continuing to receive cashflows whilst minimising their expenses by not allowing the next block into the game.
I'm worried that if I buy the game now, either a) they will keep moving the beta block I'm in back further and further so I'll play the beta test for just a few weeks before the release build comes, or b) I won't get to participate in beta at all and I'll just end up with a game 3 months before I can actually play it. It would like buying an Xbox 360 game today because you plan on buying an Xbox 360 3 months from now.
The game looks great. The dev team looks very professional. I'm just worried that they're dangerously under-capitalised.
It's bad enough these companies expect a monthly subscription, but soon they are going to expect people to pre-order their products. I mean look how Darkfall launched, selling only 5,000 copies at a time or whatever. Who puts up with that? Nobody should.

There are many worries about the feature of MO. But as well there are tons of hope put on by ppl interested in this title, as almost all its mechanics are the ones, who were expected to be seen in mmos for last 5 years.
Look how successful are single player games like Dark Messiah or Mount&Blade. Plenty of working solutions in those 2 are being ported to a mmo game. SV is breaking grounds, both by trying to gather good solutions into 1 bag, and the same goes with technology they are using (beside UE3 they use grome, epic's atlas, and newest net code & server side solutions in a seamless world)
Tell me, who is going to make another try to invent a full loot game again in next 5 yrs if SV dies and AV goes bust ? Money making blizzard ? Yeah, they could create such game, tell their minions to play it instead of obsolete wow, and start dumbing it down like EA did to UO.
As for the under-capitalised question, SV is on stock-exchange for over 2 yrs. They got enough investors. But as every stock investor wants to earn money. With the influence of funds coming from preorders, development situation is stabilized for this year, and I hope they'll release MO before x-mas. As it will be the best time to release a new game.
So if you aren't interested in preordering, but have some spar cash, you can always buy stocks

Well, there is a group of people who think asking for money before you launch a game (and in some cases, allow free trials) is bad form and as such, developers should be discouraged from asking for it.
They view people willing to spend money on such pre-orders as contributing to the problem and therefore must try to convert people to their way of thinking.
Not an entirely unreasonable position from their point of view.

I have seen one too many insulting comments about people who took the decision to pay up. While I personally did not, I applaud those who would support a small developer to make the kind of game all of us say we want. It was a brave move, which bespeaks of the courage of their convictions. To the mockers - Have you ever tried to raise finance for a worthwhile project in this climate? It's a bitch. Have you the guts to put your money where your mouth is? If not, shame on you for mocking those with the courage to do so. If prospective clients think this game has promise, and that the devs are trustworthy enough to deserve a break, good on them. They are patrons of the arts. I wish them success in their investment - however long it may take to come to fruition.
Its simple you buy the game or you dont buy the game. No point on trying to change people opinion when they are already 100 % sure they are right. For intellectuals discussions are for getting wiser, but when I look at these forums it looks like they become more stupid. I honestly start to wonder why I even post on these forums anymore. Seem more like people come here to argue or release steam because they got so much anger issues or lack of money. Nothing anyone is saying on these forums is going to change anyone with a brains mind. Trying the game for yourself will. Which is why I am buying it tomorrow. And half of the people posting about a game seen like 2 screenshots from it and 1 video and thing they know everything, and 70 % of what they are saying is pure speculations. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts.
Can I have your stuff?

If they were making a new share issue to increase their capital, I actually might do this. But buying stocks off the secondary market doesn't put any more money in their pockets. The only way me buying their shares on market would have any benefit to them would be if they have debt convenants in place that trigger if their market capitalisation falls below a certain level, which would be a really bad position for an MMORPG maker to be in.
Yeah, according to your line of thinking the Medici = biggest suckers ever... and I, and the rest of the world, are grateful for that.
Their willingness to comission great works of art without any idea how they would turn out changed the world. Of course, I have no idea how all of this will turn out vis a vis Mortal Online, but people paying in advance for the promise of something to come is a good thing.
Sure, some get taken to the cleaners for their troubles (moreso than not in this particular gaming genre), but some also get a sense of satisfaction when gazing at some masterpiece that their faith and support helped bring into the world.
Sometimes helpling an artistic vision come to fruition is a sucker's bet, and at other times, you come out of it looking like a genius and the world owes you, and the artist, a pat on the back.
yes, because I'm sure the Star Vault devs have zero prior experiences in the gaming industry that we can look too. And while the Medici could look at past works, they still took gambles when comissioning artists to work on projects that weren't exactly in their field of expertise (e.g., the Sistine Chapel painted by MIchelangelo, most noted for his work in marble/sculpture, not painting).
My point is that there are many cases of people supporting the arts on little more than faith. Granted, you can look at the artist's prior works (as one could probably look up the resumes of individual Star Vault devs to get a sense of what they have already accomplished), but past performance is by no means a guarantee of future success.
Whether you are supporting a relative unknown, or an established great, supporting the arts = an act of faith. That was the only point I was trying to make, chasing parked cars or not.
As far as Star Vaults previous abilities, I have never played an MMORPG that they have published....so they have no track record in this arena. They are certainly not a Michealangelo of the gaming world, since you threw his name out there.
So, giving this company cash for a game they have not finished is like the medici's giving cash to a completely unknown artist. Its a huge risk, (huge is a relative term, depending on how much this money means to your monley expenses).
I do feel that comparing this to art that has lasted for centeries to be a bit rich. This game will likely not even work in 10 years. We aren't the medici's here, commisioning noble works of art, we're just a bunch of nerds who wanna play a game

This Dark & Light all over again. It's sad, but I've never seen an MMO from a small company amount to anything but poorly-balanced, poorly-programmed junk.

The medici's did not invest in artist's with no work history. They could afford the best....meaning they knew what they were getting for their money.

O yes, and I just got done playing a round of tabletop based on the Mortal Online mythology that has been around for 20+ years.
I just hope that everyone that bought a pre-order will at least be able to play their free month in the future.
