Anyway, my other point was that most players will probably carry at least one form of ranged weapon, with at least a few shots. The player gunning everyone down in his vehicle would most likely be taken down by a nearby player with a quick hand after the first couple victims.
I like the idea of some local service comming around and picking up your car, for a price after logout but I also like Atheraal's idea and would really like to see a mix of the two so that maybe after a quick log your vehicle could sit for say an hour and if noone has come along and robbed you blinde then the vehicle would be safely transported to the nearest major city, or maybe the time given for the transport occurs depends on how far into the wilderness you are and how dangerous the area. This would give you more of an insentive to make sure you hide your vehicle in a good spot and may make for some good treasure hunting around areas that could be good hidding spots. Of course the vehicle wouldn't be easily robbed while the player is online because he can watch his stash but as soon as he logs its fair game.
Guys, one thing your losing sight of again is "it is a game". I was an origonal beta tester for SWG and I played that game for over a year in beta and about 6months after release before animals came out to move around. And it SUCKED. Sucked a LOT.
Realisticly speaking, YES I understand vehicles are a rare thing and hard to develop and come by. But you have to think about moving around, if not thinking of it as a storage space to prevent the unrealistic feel and look of a "back pack".
Can you really see your self with a bazooka, sawed off shotgun, and .50cal Desert Eagle moving from town to town on a mule? Err...NO. That would be completely lame. Fallout had it done a nice way. You don't get a car right off the bat, you have to quest to get the car parts and then you have to get it built. With out making the "car quest" as hard as making mando armor in SWG, there does need to be some work involved to enjoy the luxuries in the wasteland life.
But remember, your not driving around in a Ferrari or Porche. Your probibly driving around in a Mustang clone with rivitted steel on the hood and door for armor and a welded .50cal cannon on the roof to take on wandering monsters that lurk in the wastelands sands. (or something)
I PROMISE YOU.....the more people keep talking about realism, the more you will dread the game. This is a bent reality, one that you can emmurse yourself into and enjoy. But, having to spend hours walking, will not be fun. And I can't picture a very well working and easy to use transit system running through the wastelands. So, transport over long distances will more than likely be YOUR responsibility to handle and manage.
Think of it like when Anakin did the pod races. The stadium is secure as well as a lot of the track. But some of the "track" is overlooked by Tuskin Raiders who now shoot down at passer-bys driving by. Same thing in the wastelands. You can have a semi-working transit system for an area, but going over long distances, there is no way to keep it "secure" and working from the evil that lurks in the sands.......
Actually, in the first Fallout you had no vehicle. You walked everywhere. And sometimes you got stopped and had to defend yourself against raiders. The second one gave you a car about 1/4-1/2 of the way through the game (depending on whether you tried to get it right away or not).
I remeber Galaxies before vehicles and mounts (another thing we should have in FE). You ran everywhere. I ran to Anchorhead from Bestine with raiding parties. I ran all the way to Jabbas place before I was even master marksman, dodging creatures everywhere that could kill me. It was fun as hell. Because of that, I found the Desert Maze and the Lars Homestead (before it became a POI). I lived 1km from Obi-wan's House, and had to walk all the way back to Bestine to find civilization. But that wasn't down time because you were constantly doing things: hiding from this, fighting that, running from those. I'd rather see something like that.

I fully understand what you mean. In A Tale in the Desert, I once spent six hours running from one end of the map to the other so that I could learn Egypt up and down. It was one of the most interesting and rewarding experiences I've ever had in an MMO.
However, only a very, very small percentage of players are willing to spend so much time in transit. The other question that has to be addressed is how vehicles will compare to walking on foot - the advantage of speed is gigantic, and players who spend months exploring one region may find that another player does it in a matter of days simply because he or she has a vehicle. Hopefully gasoline will be a precious commodity, and so players will have to conserve it (many will not like this, but I think that it's more realistic and will balance out the game). I think that if you realistically limit players, they will expand to a certain point, but that there will always be a "frontier beyond the frontier" where new adventures await the solitary traveller.

I know the first Fallout didnt have a car. But you have to remember, an RPG has a time elapse according to YOUR game because it is not online. An online game cant walk and have a day go by in 5 mins because it is done in real time. That is all I was referring to as in the need for a vehicle of some sort.
