The reason I love AoC is that this is the most original and "next-gen" mmo I've played. For me AoC is the only MMO I've tried that attempts to pair single-player-gameplay quality with MMORPG scope. Other MMOs I tried are wow, perfect world, L2 and aion .Before I started playing AoC I spent most of my time playing Oblivion, FPSs or console games. Some specific points imo are: 1. Stunning, immersive and brutal world atmosphere
2. Combat and Control System - I'm not just talking about the combo system for melee - the whole movement system is much more responsive than in any other mmo I've played. I actually feel like I'm controlling my character.
3. Open ffa world pvp from the word go on pvp servers - no "get to lvl 25 then you are finally allowed to pvp but only in certain zones" boredom here...
4. Guild-based rather than race-based which makes the game politics more dynamic. I was really impressed to hear about a raid group in which some of the members "mutinied", left the group and started killing the rest of the group - sounds bad, but the point is you just don't get freedom to do this kind of thing in RvR.
5. Interesting zones. I don't care about having a seamless world to explore if after walking for 5 mins all I see is the same flat, generated texture and scenery. Zones in AoC are large, well designed. have great atmosphere and land layout - and being interesting and having atmosphere counts for more than the simple fact of having a seamless world imo.
6. Interesting classes
7. Interesting dungeons
(xibaluku feels more like tomb raider online than a typical mmo)
8. Lack of boring grind
9. Vistrix is possibly the coolest boss I've ever seen in a game.
10. Detailed character customization
11.Boobs and fatalities (I don't care what anyone says about this being immature - I prefer to have them)
edit: edited numbers
Good points! The lack of boring grind is very nice (especially after playing Final Fantasy XI for some time), and the FFA PvP is very important for me. Also agree that Guild based is better than race-based (I hate when games tell me to hate someone because they are another race/faction).
Also would like to add fantastic music and good art-direction to your list
