19 hours to go from 44 to 45... seems normal, I remember classic WoW being like that early on to some degree and EQ as well. But let's talk about the grand-daddy of all leveling times... how long does it take to gain a level in FFXI towards the end game? Since 44-45 is like 54-55 in WoW/EQ and FFXI is like what--- 70s ish towards level max?
Is FFXI a bigger grind than Lineage 2?
Without a doubt. Making a level in FFXI was a joyus event past 20 or so.
Yeah... Lineage 2, gaining a level is great--- but when you gain a level in FFXI, you'd take a long break and host a Rave to celebrate you gained a level. And no one would really complain about how long it takes to gain a level... why? Because the after-parties were flippin awesome!
Errr... Wow. I couldn't disagree more.
You can get from 74 to 75 in maybe 5 hours or so in a good party in FFXI (speaking from experience).
In Lineage 2, getting from 74 to 75 can take all day, if not longer. You're getting like .01% of a level for every 10 kills at the higher levels of L2.
Now.. at the lower levels... up to 60 or so... Lineage 2 has been considerably sped up recently. But from 60 and up it becomes a very different deal altogether, so I guess it depends on what part of the level range you're talking about.
5 hours is possible in a burn party, I played before thoes were around.
Yeah, I didn't mention that... but it was a merit-style party. In a normal, "traditional" party it would take a bit longer... but still nowhere near what it would take in L2 for 74-75.
Relating to another post...
As for grinding music... yes, it's a must.
For me, SYL = my Grinding Music (admittedly one of their "tamer" songs, but the energy is still there).

Grind is an interesting term for MMO's... Be it endlessly slaughtering crabs or endlessly running to all corners of the map for one quest or the other, you're still grinding. Quest grinding or mob grinding.. it ultimately makes no difference. Sometimes there are days where I want to just log in.. go to a zone.. and kill everything I see. Other days I do more quests, my point is who cares what *type* of grinding it is, the better question is are you progressing?
Are you making money? Are you getting XP? Are you fulfilling other featuers of the game (getting crafting materials etc) that you want to accomplish in addition to the grind? If the answer is yes, I fail to see the problem. Even when I'm in a mood to grind endlessly I make it a point to be fulfilling at least one other objective above and beyond the simple acquisition of XP.
Given the way that your ally markoraos and other WAR fans post/feel about AION and its posters and do nothing but come in here nitpick over "No Level 1 PvP!!!" and callously insult because they are going "to the beach".. yeah, I see the irony full well.
It kind of makes everything you WAR fans say in this thread non-valid and look like trolling.
WAR fans? Are you serious? I paid for a 3 month subscription for WAR, but only stayed for barely 2 out of the 3 due to sheer boredom. WoW fan? Maybe. AoC fan? Even greater to a degree, since I got to max level in AoC (unlike WAR) and tried to do some sieges in a guild. I even liked EQ2 more than WAR and played RO longer than I did WAR, so your inference is really out of whack with reality. I even played AO longer than WAR and that game was barely more than auto-attack (although it wasn't too bad back in the day).
I'm still leaning towards an Aion subscription even with the grind, since I'm so sick of WoW. Out of all of the MMO's I've ever played, WoW was my favorite and still is, so if you're going to call me a fanboi, then call me a WoW fanboi.
This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.
20 hours for the last level of the game isn't bad at all; seeing as the initial level cap was 45( its now 50) but its pretty short even when compared to vanilla wow 50-60
Are you serious? I've played WoW since relase and leveled countless toons to 60 and even a few to 80, yet I've never had to grind for 20 let alone 10 hours to get anywhere in WoW. There was always a sufficient amount of quests, so that you never had to grind; though there was a lot more walking back in those days.
Like everyones saying you cant compare game leveling times...they are different games and need to be played for fun. Its the same way I was with WOW, tried leveling the fastest because the top lvl is what you want to gain all your power and gear and pvp at the highest level. Looking back on WOW you see how horribly corrupt blizzard is and how they ruin handful of peoples lives....main reason I quit WOW after playing Lich King you ask? Oh right because you need to sit there like a second damn job gaining gear to be "good" perse. Its refreshing to wait for Aion to come out and begin a new adventure in a game I have never played yet. Anyone great reason is my Girl friends going to play Aion as well. Always a blast incorporating other parts of your life in activities all can enjoy together.
As for the other posts: Yes, my utility function is different from yours. There is no correct way to enjoy a game, but for me grinding mobs without a lore purpose, or slow advancement is a real turn off: Even in WoW, I never stay too long at the end game, due to a lack of advancement and change in game play. I particularly liked AoC, because you could advance quickly despite the lack of quests; the lack of reliance on gear (which is now defunct, since they've gone the WoW route of trivializing players who don't get the good rewards) also kept me playing, since I could still keep up on PvP without having to grind PvE .
The bottom line is: You're not me and I'm not you. I don't give a fuck if you like pulling your nails out, grinding a lot of mobs, or eating mayonnaise; I'm never going to like those things and that's final.

yep - and thats fine.
On the converse, you must realize no one here really cares if you feel 15 hours for a level is a "grind".... and no one really wants to hear the whining about people who DONT like it either.
So, moral of the story.. if you don't like the grind - don't play it.
I played since betaphase 2 and I got really happy becaue the first levels vvas fairly decent to play and i heard tons of people saying it vvould be a insane grind fest..
I got 3 chars up to level 20, some of them 21-23 novv, and i just CBA to do anymore, the grind is already so slovv and boering and like 3-4 levels betvveen getting nevv skills, im totally not saying i vvant a ezmode game vvhere i can instading to the cap, but at least throvv in some carrots, playing for tons of hours vvithout much revvard at all is just demoralizing, I vvas totally eager to start playing this at launch, but after beta, no vvay in hell! :P
Are you really comparing 19 hours per level, with an average of 5~6% per hour to a Lineage 2 grind? You should play RF Online, Ragnarok Online, L2 or *insert asian F2P game here* on 1x rates to see what's a real grind, way less than 1% per hour. What's next, if I don't make 50% per hour (or I can't purchase the level from an item mall) it is a grind fest?
For me this wouldn't be a turn off, however the fact is there are various "improvements" in leveling from 1.0 to 1.5 (for some this is not an improvement, just dumbing down the game for people who want easy quick stuff in a RPG), so your statistic is no longer accurate (actually, your base is just someone posting that made a calculation and you believe it, no real data behind it there).
Respecting your opinion, if grinding is really a turn off for you, I suggest you cancel your pre-order and wait until the game releases and real information regarding leveling on 1.5 is released. Obviously that will take away any kind of "competition" for being a "pioneer" in the server, if you enjoy this kind of feeling that only happens once per server.
On the converse, you must realize no one here really cares if you feel 15 hours for a level is a "grind".... and no one really wants to hear the whining about people who DONT like it either.

This a forum. Nobody has to listen to anything. If you don't like it, then don't click the fucking thread title. It's not very hard.
I'll continue to "whine" about things I don't like and tough shit if you don't like it.
Welcome to ignore.

hahaha Im so glad.. because you sir... are a joke.
That... doesn't seem that long? Considering that Aion has 30 levels less than WoW has of course it will take longer per level (on average) than it would in WoW. Also that is pretty much just all speculation on his part. I would wait and see how much it actually takes with patch 1.5
Still compared to Lineage II that is nothing. Lineage II higher up was like 19 hours for like 5%.
Yes, but it still is disconcerting. I remember reading a post on Aionsource that had a bar graph with the exp from quests next to the required exp to level and the bar for required was quite a few times the bar of exp obtained from quests.
I also understand that quite a few quests will be added in 1.5, but even if they do add a lot of quests it is hard to imagine them making enough to fill such a gap when the exp requirement is so high to level.
So, yeah I'll probably hold on until release. Lineage II was a combination of hyperbole and ignorance, but still drives the point home, since a lot of the most popular p2p games don't have those kinds of grinds.
This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.
Ok. Are people really complaining about not getting instant gratification? Heaven forbid someone work for an accomplishment. If you work/have responsibilities, like alot of folks with MMOs, then you have to put in more time. This self righteous entitlement of getting levels/things as fast as possible with little effort is just plan and simple pathetic.
Also, just because WoW is high on the ladder for examples don't keep tossing it out there as the format for all games to follow. It is but one. Yes, leveling was horribly easy to accomplish in the WoW setting and it set a bad example for those coming in to MMOs to expect. Look at it like this. Not everyone makes a 6 figure salary in a company, but beings you are part of the company you should just have a high salary right? No real work required to get there right? No. If you want a game that gives you everything go else where. I for one, applaud AION if they indeed are giving the grind to get to the top level. It will seperate the men from the boys so to speak. Quests should only take someone so far not carry them the whole way.

Wait, so some of you actually like a grind? No wonder this genre is always in the shitter.
Actually I prefer to log in - be top level/capped and have the best loot as soon as I create my character
Its actually called Guild Wars (only.. its about a day to do all the above).
If your interested, you can check it out. It might be right up your alley.... I actually liked it very much when I played..... very good game, great PVP.

You might want to reread that.
No one called YOU a WAR fan. But it appears that you certainly are allying with some in this thread pushing very small insignificant points about things in AION that most people find picayune.
PvPing from Level 1 is a non-issue, non gamebreaker... but it seems that the biggest bat haters can find to swing. And what game recently allowed you to do that? Warhammer. There aren't many games, especially recently that allow you to PvP from the start. Some of the people posting are well known WAR fans like markaraos who were saying nutty stuff on that forum, and now just repeating nonsense here.
I am not calling you a nut to be sure, but you certainly are pushing their points to a huge degree with much ado about nothing. I think you'll find when you hit endgame that you'll see 19 hours (and it won't be that) isn't that big of a deal either and you'll look back on your thread and wonder how you got conned into pushing it. Some of us who have played real grind games think this is really lighweight and about average for any non-grind game.
AION isn't perfect by any stretch, but there's certainly no need for people to invent issues that really aren't important to gameplay overall.
I'm sorry I don't consider participating in very interesting fun quest grinding, and that poster isn't being honest Questing does not take longer, In the Korean version when I leveled my Ranger from 44-45 it took about fourteen hours give or take. The poster on Aion source is obviously pro grind and is doing every thing in his power to present the game as a grind fest in hopes of turning off what he considers the wow crowd. This is a case where folks need to ignore what is being said and experience it for themselves.
This sword here at my side dont act the way it should Keeps calling me its master, but I feel like its slave Hauling me faster and faster to an early, early grave And it howls! it howls like hell!

100% agree. I have leveled several characters 44-45 in the Korean game it is fifteen or sixteen hours tops through questing, I don't know what that tard is smoking on Aion source but he needs to cut the dose. Only a idiot would grind levels in Aion when there is a cool quest system that gives you decent loot.
With great work comes great rewards, but I see your post more like you wanna show that this game is a grind game which its not. Play Lineage 2 and you will see what a grindgame looks like. If I died at my level in L2 it took me 8 hours "to get back exp" I lost when i died. So 19 hours is not grind, its a challange
Hopefully they will add more quests tho.
This game is a grind game when compared to the western MMO's. I'm sure this game is standard fare (or even easier than what Asian mmo's are like from anecdotal evidence), but it's really pushing the envelope when compared to other popular western MMORPG's like LOTRO et al.
Yes might be but not a huge leap, I think the "kids of WoW" need to grow up and do some work for a change, so it might be a "healthy bridge" right?
I think we will see more of these mmo in the future.
"need to grow up and do some work for a change". Last I checked, I'm paying to play a GAME, not WORK.
Disillusioned MMO player: "This game is too grindy. If you change it, I'll think about subbing."
NCSoft: "We have significantly lowered the amount of "grind" that we have put in AION compared to our other games like Lineage I/II. We think most players will be pleased."
Disillusioned MMO player: "Really? I didn't know that. But it's still way too grindy. I won't sub unless you address it, and neither will my friends."
NCSoft: "Well, we specifically tailored AION's experience and level rate to Western gamers likes of less grind. We did research and found that this was important and we addressed it accordingly and the response overall has been very good. This is something we really wanted to do because we'd like them to be involved."
Disillusioned MMO player: "I don't know who you asked, but I'm just not feeling it. I read someplace where it takes 19 hours to get from Level 44-45! You call that no grind??? WTF?"
NCSoft: "Well, if you take the average gamer, for them that is only a net amount of 3% of their overall total gaming time. We feel 3% is an acceptable amount of time to spend at a higher level."
Disillusioned MMO player: "Well, it's not and I've been gaming since.. before they made computers and the internet. And while we're at it... why the hell can't I pvp when I make my character from Day 1? I played Warhammer and they let me pvp right from level 1!?!? I thought this was supposed to be such a "new game" but you don't even have that! This is a mistake and you won't get any customers."
NCSoft: "We feel the early levels aren't suited well to pvp due to players that may be new to the game and they simply need a break from unwanted attacks and ganking. There will be plenty of time to pvp once a player hits gets past Level 20. We currently have around 4 million customers and have tons of pre-orders, very few have said that was an issue."
Disillusioned MMO player: "I've talked to plenty of my other friends from Warhammer and Wow and they said they aren't coming to play AION either unless those things are added; especially the PvP thingy. Plus, it's too cartoony and looks like anime. You need to redo the art and make it "grittier". It's too soft and ghay looking."
NCSoft: "... We feel the art direction is in keeping with the storyline and you can tailor and highly customize your character to anything you wish if the base model is too.. "androgynous". You can spend as much time as you like with the sliders and make goblins, orcs, demons, tough guys, whatever you like. You are only limited in your imagination as to what your character looks like. We force nothing on you.

NCSoft: ... You aren't playing our game now. You aren't our customers as you yourself stated earlier.
Disillusioned MMO player: "Well.. we MIGHT be one day. I'm serious. If you want MY sub money, you'll have to change some things before you release this game. And I know you still have until September 22 because you are in beta, so you have NO EXCUSE to not put in what I and my 4 friends from Warhammer want. If we like it, we might bring over our guild. If you don't, we'll hit the forums and tell everyone how much crap this game will be, and wait for something else. Maybe Star Wars TOR. Then you'll be sorry!"

I don't really understand what the point of this post was.
If someone says they don't like the grind in Aion, they're "disillusioned"?

This a forum. Nobody has to listen to anything. If you don't like it, then don't click the fucking thread title. It's not very hard.
I'll continue to "whine" about things I don't like and tough shit if you don't like it.
Welcome to ignore.

That... doesn't seem that long?
Considering that Aion has 30 levels less than WoW has of course it will take longer per level (on average) than it would in WoW.
Also that is pretty much just all speculation on his part. I would wait and see how much it actually takes with patch 1.5
Still compared to Lineage II that is nothing. Lineage II higher up was like 19 hours for like 5%.

hahaha Im so glad.. because you sir... are a joke.
Good riddence...

Thumbs up AION, once again I'm liking you more.

I you... and completely agree
"TO MICHAEL!"
PvPing from Level 1

No to both.

Beware of the bureyku...Aionfanboi
I'm sorry I don't consider participating in very interesting fun quest grinding, and that poster isn't being honest Questing does not take longer, In the Korean version when I leveled my Ranger from 44-45 it took about fourteen hours give or take. The poster on Aion source is obviously pro grind and is doing every thing in his power to present the game as a grind fest in hopes of turning off what he considers the wow crowd. This is a case where folks need to ignore what is being said and experience it for themselves.
This sword here at my side dont act the way it should
Keeps calling me its master, but I feel like its slave
Hauling me faster and faster to an early, early grave
And it howls! it howls like hell!
Idiot.
Disillusioned MMO player: "Yeah.. well, but I still have to look at other people who made ghay characters and I don't like that, so it's the same thing really. It's ghay. Mythic at least listens to us when we tell them to put something in. Anytime we say "put this in", Mythic does it right away! They really know how to treat their customers unlike you, NCSoft."
NCSoft: "Sorry to hear that. We wish you well in the search for your game. Have a great day!"
"TO MICHAEL!"
I don't really understand what the point of this post was.
If someone says they don't like the grind in Aion, they're "disillusioned"?
