This comes down to personal preference. Some people are ok with instanced zones, and some are not. I personally cannot tolerate it because it constantly rips me out of immersion in the game world. I hate talking about the mechanics of the game client while I am trying to escape into a virtual world. When I am having to ask my friends what "zone" and "channel" they are in, I have trouble staying engaged in the game world. It also takes away from the persistent world aspect of the game in my opinion, and it lowers your ability to meet people and have random adventures with strangers. I understand this doesn't bother many people, but for those of us who long for game devs to get back on track developing large open persistent worlds again, this is a smack in the face. I was seriously considering trying this game out for lack of anything else to play right not, but this pretty much put an end to that idea.
I'm sorry you have such a fragile imagination. Hope things work out for you.
Hahaha.. 'fragile imagination'. It's like being at the movies and having some douche bag using his cell phone the entire time. It's an annoyance, and since I'm spending my money, I am free to choose whether or not to play Aion based on instancing. You are welcome to your opinion, even it if it simply rooted in fanboyism. Some of you have the hardest time accepting that other people do not like EXACTLY what you like. It's actually quite sad to watch you all bicker with each other because you have ZERO tolerance for opposing opinions. Talk about dysfunctional.
A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.
I prefer open world to instances (although I understand the dev's views on why instances are "better") because of the sense of competition, but I'm not going to voice my opinion vehemently like it's a game killer. I just like the fact that everyone has the same chance at everything but to the victor goes the spoils. It eliminates ALOT of farming for it and makes every piece of armor/gear you get that much more important.
On that note, one HUGE thing I like about Aion is the ability to transfer gear stats to different looking gear. For an RPG aspect it gives me an idea to get the most threadbare looking cloth gear stacked with the best stats that I can. Might even help when people scope me out for a ganking.
So many possibilities... but I digress.
When you have multiple instances of the same dungeon, you take away the glory. The only real worth if it's a server first at that point. Competition keeps it live and everyone being able to kill their own eliteboss01 at the same time just... cheapens it. Makes you feel like you are back to "end game only" mode.
I am glad there are channels for the first two areas. its not hard to switch channels if your legion mates are different channel than you. The last CB there was over 40 people at the starting area, most of them playing with emotes. So I switch channels, switching channels is great if you have to do an escort quest but someone already took the NPC. Instead of waiting, Switch channels and start the escort quest myself.
I personally hate the instancing of a world zone. But seriously...YOU CAN SWITCH CHANNELS. QQ less, pew pew more.
And on a side note: Friends lists helps those 'relationships' flourish. Just because there's 'half' as many people in one channel doesn't reduce your chances of finding a friend.
Do you have the willpower to delete YOUR wow toons? XD

The channels in the game are for levels 1 thru 20. After that there are no channels. Patch 1.5 does bring in some 6 and 24 person instances.
World bosses in the abyss are still there,. To access alot of the instances your guild must own a fort.
To take a fort you will be doing PVP and fighting the Baluur. Baluur will also ty and take a fort you own sometimes.
