Not being able to jump over small objects or onto low ledges was the main thing that put me off GW... I found it so frustrating it quickly turned me off the game. If FFXIV is the same I won't waste my money as I know ahead of time it will frustrate the @#%$ out of me.
Jumping is not needed it is nothing but annoying. I do however agree with the step up idea because I hate running around in FFXI hit something around a foot tall and having to go around.
I guess it depend on whether the devs want the game to be immersive or not.
Jumping is part of being a mammal. Think about it a sec.
True, so's taking a dump in the crapper, but I don't want to do that with my toons.
Jumping is mostly useless in a PvE orientated game so I necessarily wouldn't want them devoting a key to that I would have to swap out later. It's not like it gives you a real battle advantage in most games either.
It's a "fun thing" but they have emotes for that. Mostly I always found it annoying standing around at an auction house, buying from a merchant or trading with someone in game and some loony kid would incessantly jump all around you in constant circles for attention because he wanted to "duel".

I'm flabbergasted that there are so many people who wouldn't play a game over something as petty as not being able to jump. That's akin to not playing a game because you can't pick blue hair for your avatar, or you can't run backwards at full speed. It just goes to show how illogical people's purchasing motivations are.

Its nice that outside of Off-Topic we can agree.

Even disagreeing is fine, as long as personal insults don't accompany them. That usually kills any discussion trying to talk about a point.
I think, even if there is no tactical reason, jumping is a big thing. it's just providing more freedom to the players. some of the things that offset a lot of games for me is not having freedom. you want to walk down this hill? too damn bad, walk for 12 hours to go around. thats why I liked WoW, even though by todays standards it looks awful, it had no limits to the players freedom.

Wtheck are you talking about? Wow Had TONS of restrictions. Was it more open than Lots of MMO's? Yeah sure. But Vanguard Blows it outa the water. FFXI and Most games had these Restrictions Because they needed to keep you in a given area. Just like wow and other games. There is only so mutch world they can make and let you play in.
Which is more anoying, Not jumping and Unable to get over the fence, Or Jumping and hitting a Invizo wall?

No, Square-Enix is just as bad as SOE and not to mention if it's anything like it's predecessor it will take 18 hours to kill a single thing. Good day.
When did you start playing "old school" MMO's. World Of Warcraft?

is the lack of a jumping ability really go to "kill it" for you?
is the lack of jumping/hoping really going to make you snap out of the game and say fuk this i don't need this i cannot fully enjoy a game that does not allow me to jump.
if this makes or breaks a game experience for you than your right you toon should jump... off a cliff.

If anything Jumping itself is the Immersion breaker.
Honestly how mutch does anyone here jump IRL?

I spend a lot of time driving my car in real life and it's pretty immersive.
They should have mounts that look like cars in FFXIV for that extra immersive feel.
And they should also charge a surcharge every week for mount insurance in case your chocobo hits someone else's chocobo, or runs over someone else while they are farming or walking around.
After all, it took me months to breed the perfect chocobo and I don't want it wrecked or have the Jueno guard come arrest me.
inviso wall? there were like 3 in Wow. mostly because of instances & portholes (like to outland) I have NEVER hit a wall from jumping. EVER. I've hit those annoying fences. if the Devs even know how to make a game, they won't have an annoyance of invisable walls. If you need to keep people in a given area, you shouldn't make it an MMO. I know I'm going to get flamed for saying that. Seriously, it's a freedom thing. I don't want to be stuck in an area where I can see where I want to go, but have to walk around for an hour to get there. god forbid with 20 people waiting for me or with me.
I kind of doubt it will, anyhow i have never seen jumping come of any use in games other than players goofing off with it.
Jumping was a useful kiting technic in eq1, wow, and vg. That is run, jump, turn and fire over your shoulder, keep running. That it was clumsily negated in lotro is one of the few things I have against that game.
In my opinion, there can be a form of jump...and that's not the kind of jump where you do it freely with the spacebar and annoy the hell out of others.
I think we're all forgetting that in various FF games, "jump" is a very useful attack. It allows you to inflict damage while the opponent couldn't attack you. Now, if the attack ability "jump" was in FF XIV, it wouldn't make you invulnerable to damage. You could get shot out of the sky by a ranged attack of some sort.
I remember "jump" best from FF Tactics (on my PSP). It was the Dragoon's specialty, and was very useful. That attack has potential inside FF XIV.
Although the presence/absence of jumping isn't a game-breaker for me, i can understand the 'immersion' argument that many proponents of jumping seem to use. Put simply, there are things that a normal, atheletic person should be able to do on certain types of terrain. If there is a waist-high rock or a low fence or a small shrubbery blocking your path, you should be able to hop/ climb over it fairly easily. If there is a slight incline, you should be able to negotiate your way up and down it without too much difficulty (though fighting while doing so might be a problem).
The lack of jumping in MMOs tends to foil these preconceptions by turning every rise and curve in the landscape into an impassible wall; it makes many players feel like zones are flat and linear (which is not always true). Introducing 'free' jumping, however, can annoy some players (or most FFXI players, it seems).
One alternate solution to this might be introducing an environmentally triggered 'autojump,' such as is featured in many recent console platformers; i.e., if you try to make your character negotiate obstacles or inclines, the game engine would automatically start a 'jump up/over' or a 'climb wall' or a 'skid down the hill' or a 'fall to your death' animation. I think this would be an acceptable compromise, but i'm not sure how hard it would be to implement.
Edit: Meh... should have read back and noticed that a feature like this was already suggested by Gameslave >_>;... Has there ever been an MMO created with this sort of thing, though? It might be a bear to code well, with sensible animations, unless all 'passable' obstacles were designed at the same height...
It doesn't matter that jumping isn't useful, being able to jump adds a more realistic feel to an MMORPG(Any game) wether you like it or not. Why do we jump in real life? probably 50% of the times just cause we feel for it, it's the same in-game.
muahahaaha! it would be funny if it weren't sad...

Jump is in FF11 as a dragoon ability now for that exact reason.
EQ1 had a decent solution to the over-use of jumping. Make it use up a portion of your endurance to jump. That way it can be used not abused.
If there were some sort of 'Endurance' metric in FFXIV that affected how your character functioned in a meaningful way (i.e. Endurance is expended in the use of skills), that might be a way to go, but that's adding a layer of complexity that the designers and players might find undesirable.
