I understand that for the purposes of the story for FFXI on van'adiel the male mithra's, and female galka's were excluded from the game. While it did make the game more dynamic in a sense, it still felt limiting. Now in FFXIV it looks as though there will be no male Mi'Qote and female Roegadyn. I wouldnt have so much of a problem with this if it were a sequel to FFXI, but its a completely different game with a different story line. Is it too much to ask to bring in the male and female counterparts to these races we never saw in FFXI?

I would also like to see male/female counterparts of those races. not me but i know a lot of ppl who would like to be a male...cat thing ( he wants the agi and everything without being a chick). Although if u look at the lalafells the descreption(sry might have spelled that wrong, not very good at spelling) it says they r very quick and stealthy. But they might have said that about tarus in ffxi idk.
Maybe they'll add lore in stating that whenever one of those 2 races mates with a member of another race, except for eachother, the baby is guaranteed to be of their respective race? Would hate to see them just use the "catmen stay at home and play chess" excuse, or the "big guys reincarnate unless killed" story. It was nice in FFXI, but wouldn't work well if used again.
yeah the story for y there is no female galka and no male mithras was kinda lame. but w/e i didn't pick my race for stats i pick my race for looks. I had a galka and a hume, the galka had better str and def but not enough to really matter. and i seem to remember reading somewhere that the race stats r going to be even less of a differants maker in ff14.
I've had it with this topic. I wouldn't be so flame-ready if it were posted in the many other threads that discuss this already.
I mis-edited a former post in one of those threads, so I'll just repost it here:

It never bothered me for a second that these races were only male/female in XI, and I'm not bothered by it for XIV. It shows Square-Enix is NOT catering to every whim of crybabies out there that make big deals out of nothing, which gives the rest of us hope that they haven't comletely sold out to casual solo crybabies either.
Adding male mithra or female galka really is NOT too much trouble, but it IS too much to ask on top of everything else. I would rather see a brand new playable race than either of these counterparts. Maybe even a completely genderless and androgynous race just so people can't bitch male or female versions.
Abraxas [365]
i didn't have a problem with it either. i just played ffxi with ppl who did. And i thought they where kinda silly.
It's not catering to every whim of its player/fanbase when it simply adds to the diversity of the game. They have a male and female counterpart for the other races, so its not like they're afraid of including that component for their playable characters. The reason there were only female mithra and male galka in ffxi was because of the story-line/plot in that game. This isn't FFXI, its FFXIV. FFXIV is a different game, so why would they maintain the same race plot? unless they're purposefully TRYING to impose these limitations simply for the sake of imposing limitations, i guess my voice can't change that. But leaving things the way they are simply because thats the way it was in FFXI and its easier that way, is kind of pointless. your argument doesn't really hold any ground here.
I would however also like to see a new race added to the mix, androgynous would be cool.
I honestly don't see why people are making such a big deal about this, the lore of the FFXIV world doesn't have the gender counter part to those races as far as we know. FF titles being really big on story lines obviously doesn't want them there or doesn't have a place for them. Does it really both you guys that much? I honestly just think this is something to 'nit-pick' at because it isn't 'quite' every perfect little idea someone had in their mind that might be a nice addition to a game. If it wasn't this it would probably be something else I guess...
We shouldn't make this issue bigger than it already is, seems I can't read a FFXIV without seeing someone complain about this meaningless 'have-to-have' addition.
I wanted to play a Mithra. But i hate playing girl characters. Cause when i see girl characters in game im assuming they are chicks playing. (Guys really dont need to be making girl characters)
Your right this isnt FFXi why are they making it like that game. I want to play a brand new game not recycle content. If they dont add new player characters to this game i will be in aww.

I really wish they would add the femal Glaka's and Male Mithra's to. Daughter wanted to play a Galka in FFXI but didn't want to be a dude. I wanted to play a Mithra but didn't want to play a chick char lol. Not sure really why it would be that important for there not to be male mithra's and female galka's (Or w/e there called now). It didn't make sense then and it doesn't make sense now even from a lore perspective.

SE is the one putting the constraints on us, not us on them. I'm just saying that I, as well as many others, really think the Mi'Qote race sounds fun and interesting to play, but those of us who are in fact male might have a hard time enjoying the role playing experience in that race as a female. if someone is a male in real life and associates their identity with that, as one usually does, its hard to expect them to be comfortable projecting their identity through a feminine avatar. it becomes this uncomfortable psychological role reversal every time you log-on.
the thing is that by adding the gender choice option for those reasons, it only benefits the gaming experience. so for those of you who argue against it, you really don't have a legitimate reason other than remaining stubbornly dogmatic to the way things have been done in the franchise before.
and even though the Final Fantasy franchise is known for its characters of different genders and classes, that philosophy gets skewed when applied to the MMO online permanent avatar setting.
I'm not going to pretend I don't like the Mithra / Miqo'te. I like them very much. I think they're fun and they contribute to diversity and add an interesting dynamic to the game. And HALF the reason I don't play as one is because they are female. But it's not because I'm "dogmatic" to their successors as much as I believe Galka / Roegadyn and Mithra / Miqo'te are more interesting for being gender-exclusive.
Did it ever occur to anyone, for even a second, that perhaps only females were ever expected to play as Mithra in the first place? Within their lore they're a very rare and immigrant race. Sounds like female gamers to me...
(And I don't think it's any coincidence that I've only ever befriended three actual female Mithra across three servers in my three & a half years of playing. The rest were men, and over half were homosexual.)
Even if they added four or five more races to the mix, I don't care to see the current ones modified any more than they are now. They're unique, and IMO changing them would only take that aspect away from that.

To Baghira87,
It isn't that I am against there being a male counter part I just don't see why people 'need' the male counter part and why it is such a big deal that there be both genders available, if Square doesn't want the male counterpart playable / in lore then it isn't a big deal honestly.
You forgot that Humes also appear as the most common race in Ivalice; Ivalice games include FFXII, FFXII:RW, FFT, FFTA, and FFTA2. FFTA is debateable since the world was created by a little boy's wishes, and the town where it began was St. Ivalice; however just for the sake of argument, we'll count it.
Sorry, couldn't resist the correction, but happens when you've played literally every FF game.
I was honestly extremely excited about all the announcements that were recently posted on the FFXIV homepage.
Until I went to the races section and saw that they had given up on trying to add in even a hint of origionality to the game.
Oh lets flip over to the world tab and see the kingdoms that look pretty much like San'doria Bastok and Windurst.
No longer interested.

Still hoping they add some new race since no male mithra and female galka.
Maybe 2 new races one female which has similar stats to a galka and another male race with similar stats of a mithra (monkey race ff9 pls!!).
That would make me happy :P
I'm sorry to say that I agree with this comment a lot. Although I am still excited to play the game, I find it sad that they are not trying to be more original. The nail in the coffin was that they couldn't even do male Mithra or female Galka! It just seems like too much of a clone. Unless this is really Square's way of trying to say to FFXI players that this game is truly a sequel.
Anyway, I sure hope they decide to add the male and female counterparts.
I guess I was just hoping for a truly new feel to the FF universe. I thought for sure they would take this opportunity and introduce the Ivalice races. I thought for sure they would let us play as a Moogle or Viera. Ah well, Istill look forward to the game but am just a bit disappointed right now
Eh, game's going to be different enough with the armory system and such, I'm thinking they kept the races and some of the look to keep it from becoming too different all together. It didn't even have the FF name to start with...probably a reason for that.
There's always a chance that they will announce "new" races at a later date. pretty sure I saw someone that looked like a Gria in the Guild Leves section of the site's artwork.

All I'll say, as I said before, playable races - while the most "important" and "personal"- to the players, are only a small part of the world as a whole. There are all the different environments, a whole new bestiary, new cities, towns, quests, storylines, dialog, NPCs... and on and on.
To each their own, but to say the entire game is a "clone" or "unoriginal" because the player races are similar seems short-sighted to me.
Also, SE has already explained why they're similar - so people who might otherwise wish to carry over characters from XI that they spent so much time on can at least "recreate them". To people who never played XI, it won't make a difference; they'll be new anyway.
All I can say is, to me, to pass up on a potentially fantastic MMO experience because there's no female this or male that, or because they kept the races similar is kinda silly (again, not aimed specifically at you, Kupo).
Anyway, I sure hope they decide to add the male and female counterparts.
They just might; who knows.

Errrr... You kinda contradicted yourself there. You were hoping for a truly new feel to the FF universe... but were hoping they'd introduce Ivalice races...? If it were Ivalice races, the game would likely be on Ivalice.... which wouldn't be a "new feel to the FF universe".

I don't think anyone else has suggested this before, but yet another reason to stop complaining about character races is this:
If you were, or still are attached to your character in FFXI (or any game for that matter, since the point I'm about to make is clear and indisputable) would you rather abandon your beloved character and play something estranged and unfamiliar, or would it make more sense, being so attached and devout to your virtual projection, to want to bring that same person who has essentially become you into a whole new world to experience whole new things?
Every current and former player in FFXI has a history. What race they were, where they began their journey, what they experienced, what friends they made, and what memories were forged. And for what? To discard like yesterday's newspaper, or to carry into a brand new world? Granted you'll be starting again at ground zero, but your persona, and your experiences in FFXI remain intact. Though it's not as direct as a "sequel" being in this new brilliant world, it's as close as any devout player could hope (who heavily outweigh the one-timers & fleetly FFXI players who complain that there's no originality left in SE).
Truth be told, while SE might recycle certain themes that have become their crutch, they have the most originality and the best representation of that originality compared to that of any other company in the market. It's not a matter opinion. It's not at the sole disposal of the Final Fantasy franchise. It's one of several series of games that they have gifted us with. And we should be so lucky as to have something familiar that we can take with us on this new journey, where everything else is unknown.
That's all I wanted to say.
Quityerbitchin.

Some choose another race since for example galka and mithra were female/male only so that doesn't make sense. You said it this is a new game I don't know you but I don't always pick up human just because I used it in an earlier mmo I choose the race which is most apealing in my eyes.
And by reading the race information of new "mithra" they didn't say anything about the male only that they were small in population so there was no reason to not add them now.
I think it comes down to why you chose a particular race to take to endgame. For those reasons, people are likely to choose them again. Humes were all-round okay at everything, just like they are now. People who chose Mithra because of their DEX are likely be reborn felines once more. Some players will choose differently, but even for me, The Elzen are tallest and slimmest and it will most likely be my choice. But that is irrelevant. It's the fact that players become emotionaly attached to, and/or intimately acquainted with their most recent character.
My last post wasn't neccessarily denouncing the addition of male Miqo'te (come now, they've released the racial information, might as well get used to calling them what they are), but more in regard to the claims that SE is being unoriginal.
Anyway, since you brought it up, be realistic people! There is a point where hope becomes hopelessness. Optimism becomes denial. Just because the specifics of male/female exclusive gender are not explicitly noted, some are still holding out for the possibility, a few probably even letting that be the deciding factor in whether or not they play.
The races are there for all to see. Male and female versions, for those that include them. While reading their information the Hyuran, Lalafell, and Elzen all toggle between male/female while the Roegadyn and Miqo'te do not. Accept it. Complain all you want, the decision has made. To release that information publically is proof enough. And not unitl drastic changes are officially announced can I respect any statements alluding otherwise...

In FF Xi I would have chose elven only if i could make them shorter(don't like tall characters) and if i'm not wrong they were better in intelligence and I prefer melee :P
I was checking out Eorzeapedia and found this. Sounds like they are holding back with a purpose. So those of you who are asking for Male Miqo'te and Female Roegadyn may just get their wish. Just remember to keep an opened mind when reading this as some of it is speculatory. If you should have any other questions I would suggest to read the article here..... http://www.eorzeapedia.com/2009/08/09/taking-a-closer-look-dengeki-playstation/#more-391
"People are still hoping for male Miqo’te and female Roegadyn. So far there is nothing released about the background story that could keep that from happening. In their mini Q&A with the developers, they ask about the possibility for both of these races. Their answer: “In regards to your question about different genders, that is still a secret at this time.” Keep your hopes up!"
