Tournament of Champions: arena 5v5 "indoors" PvP zone This is a localized instance you have to queue for.
Apocalypse: they are scenarios that pit 2 teams of heroes against each other. They have PvE elements to them as well as PvP. Think of it kinda like the "Danger Room" from X-men. Different Apocalypse maps have different objectives, and different ways to win. They also have various game play mechanics like reinforcements, control points and triggered events.
There is currently one apocalypse scenario planned for release, with more in development. It's called Stronghold, a maximum security villain prison. Two teams take each other on, one team takes the role of the villains trying to escape, the other the role of the heroes trying to prevent that from happening.
I don't believe they have released numbers on the amount of people that are allowed on each team in Apocalypse scenarios. It's possible that it might change from scenario to scenario.
Open world PvP is always a possibility in the future, and they've expressed that they are open to the idea if its what their community supports. It just doesn't make much sense w/out villains in the game at this point.

You would have thought they would have learned with CoH, and the eventual implementation of CoV, that the overall community desires it.
Even Cryptic appears to recognize it already. Of the 17 videos they have on the official Champions site that advertise the game, 6 of them are PvP related. It's as if they are purposefully trying to accentuate the fact that there is PvP in the game, to cover the weak point of no open world PvP.
In my opinion, it was a poor design decision in not having villains or open world PvP, and it's probably one they regret.
I think its rather smart of them not to included villians or open world pvp personally. Its a PVE based game they've said that from the beginning. Trying to force PVP onto a PVE designed game always equals...well..Crap..hell look at WAR it tried to do both things and they were both pretty damn crappy.
Its rather smart from a design, time, and money stand point not to release with the villians. When people get bored of being the hero or the anti hero they'll likely have the villians content done and released as an expansion. They'll have to stretch out their teams less because you do know when you work on a game they break everyone into teams? A Hero team a villian team, various art teams etc. Watering it all down more would well...you can maybe imagine? Cryptic isn't some giant company the less they have to stretch their teams out the better for us and the game.
Personally this fabled PVP from COX that you speak of is pretty weak from what I hear not much PVP goes on in the Open PVP zone anyway.
Going with tournaments and challenges between heros fits the world rather well. If they release an open PVP zone expect it to come with a villians pack..doesnt make much sense for Heros to actually fight each other. Personally I think if they do villians we'er just likely to see more battleground style combat over open pvp.
In all honesty if you really think about it what game has large scale open PvP that truely works as intented? WAR's pretty much went to crap thanks to lag and well there just weren't enough people. WoW's doesn't really work most play arena's. I hate to sound cruel or whatever but Large Scale PVP isn't as popular as most people try to think it is. People want it but ..usually what they get isn't that great.

Show me the quote where they said it was a PVE only game.
Once again we will see them try to add on more pvp features (just like with CoH) once they see the carebears have once again let them flop around 100k.
Not sure why Cryptic is always so content to live in EVE Online's shadow

2. Were you ever around during City of Heroes?
I was there. I watched our server get smaller and smaller (Liberty). I was there PRe-ED and watched people demand more pvp features. Yet the PVE'ers were like 'this is a PVE game!". Yet, once they hit max level and maxed out a few alts what you think happened? They left. City of heroes was only 200k at launch and like most MMOs it just plummeted since
And again I saw this same shit with Tabula Rasa. The carebears were like, "we don't need PVP!" And here we are bout a year later TR is dead and gone
PVE is great- but thats static. People will get tired of running the same content over and over. Cryptic is not a big team like Blizzard. They really should try to get better and try to appeal more to everyone. Focusing on PVE niche isn't working and never really has for Cryptic.

I wouldn't make much sense for heros' to run around killing each-other would it. That made a design decision to focus on the hero element first, and then possibly (if the game is a success) add in a Villain expansion. I can very well imagine that if they add in a Villain expansion, open world combat will exist.
And you'd be surprised how many people dislike open world PvP to be honest, I personally support Open world PvP.... but you take a lot of liberties thinking you speak for the majority.

They've been pretty emphatic about insisting PvP is a huge part of the game. I really don't think you need to worry about it. The PvP system is there, along with competitive rewards to go with it.
When they can put in the time to do the Villain side properly, I'm sure open world PvP will exist in some fashion. Probably contested zones.
I seem to recall an interview where they said that something they regretted about City of Villains is that is was so very similar to City of Heroes. It makes me believe that if they are eventually going to put in a Villain expansion, they are going to go out of there way to make it a unique play experience and do it justice.
Besides, its a lot easier to release a new game with controlled PvP environments where you can really tweak things and control situations instead of an Open Ended environment where all manner of things can be exploited(especially in a game where people can burrow, fly, superjump, superspeed, etc). Once they get the crinkles really ironed out and the PvP system because solid, I think thats the time to look into expanding to open PvP.
I'm glad this game isnt PvP based... I would rather play something like Tabula Rasa where we as the players strive to live in an npc world. Where we band together for once against the AI all as one..
It seems that everyone just wants to fight each other. why cant this game be like Lotro and perhaps have a single mode where a player can control a thug like minion against super heroes, but I would shit a brick if they ever do what happened to CoH when CoV was released. It unbalanced the hell outta the game and made the game world seem so disconnected as well as other players.
If PvPvE is what you want Aion is your game.. If you want a good co-op experience where its naturally good versus evil then CO may be a proper fit.
I need to read up on these different travel modes. All I remember from CoX we just had superspeed, fly, teleport, and superjump. Didnt know anything bout this 'burrow' skill that sounds wild....

1) No i don't know you ... so? You started the name calling i was just purile enough to continue it.
2) Yes i was 2 years on Defiant and Union and no they didn't hit max lvl and leave cause there was no PvP as your suggesting, they hit max lvl and left because they ran out of content. 200k at launch and like most MMO's plummeted since ..... you need to think about this statement, because your right, your just wrong as to why you infer why it happens. It happens because that is the current model for MMO customers ..... when 98% of games follow the same path it isn't bad game design.
Yeah i know what you mean about Tabula Rasa, some people whined and a year later the game died .... but the two events arn't linked, trust me if that was the case EvE would have died 4 years and 11 months ago. In fact in EvE the pvpers are still claiming that Empire space is the ruin of the game and should be scrapped .... despite it is about one of only maybe 3 games who's playerbase has gown year on year ... in fact i may be wrong but i think the size of the payerbase hasn't decreased month on month in over 3 years and yet they pvpers troll out the same old argument of doom and gloom.
Yes PvE is great and yes people will tire of it and want a distraction, but that is all PvP is to the game a distraction from PvE. Get over it and move on.
The PvE niche isn't working and never really has for Cryptic ... why because the size of the playerbase follows the same pattern as 98% of the market? That's like saying "lets breathe through Gills, cause we've been mouth breathers for a few centuries and were still dying"

I never said that they said it was a PVE Only game please dont put words into my mouth or atleast try to comprehend what I'm saying. Its a PvE Based Game. Meaning at its core its design is for PvE. Like WoW at its core is a PvE game with PVP activities. The problem with WoW is it had enemy factions at the beginning so you would think they'd of had more pvp at launch instead of a year or less later. But by focusing on the core nature of the game WoW's PvE (even in its drollness at times) is pretty damn well done (even though i personally don't like the game). Cryptic is building a game with a core of PVE this is pretty obvious by all their larger design choices with the launch state of the game. There's more PVE areas then PVP, it has the omega system and the nemesis system, the PVP aspects is an 'game' for the heros and they're not techincally fighting for control over anything. Its basically alot like WoW's mostly meaningless pvp sports which are incredibly popular.
I have no doubt they'll put in a Nemesis expansion where we can play the bad guys. Will they keep the e sport or go open? I'm betting it'll be more E Sport then open PVP unless they can fix the issue of people trying to escape Open PVP fights by changing Zone instances. Look at the facts with their design choices its a PVE game with PVP sport.
I think PVE'es and PVPers who think only their way is right are what keep destroying games that are coming out. A game should have a good balance of something for everyone to do. So Cryptic took the lesser of two evils and started out with some E Sport PVP so they can ensure their PVE experience is good? That keeps Both sides happy in the end since you're not going to PVP or PVE 24 hours a day. It leaves room for growth at a better pace then crushing everything and the kitchen sink onto a game in time for launch.
Adding on PVP that utterly sucks due to poor timing and design issues won't add people to their population infact it'll eat it up and destroy it much like the Poor Design to WAR gobbled up everything but its most rabid population. Like I said I think its smart they're doing things in peices. Their mistake with COH was not in waiting to release a bad guy side with some PVP their mistake was having utterly no clue on how to handle PVP.
Show me the quote where they said it was a PVE only game.

Okay so show me the post where the developers said this. That's all I'm asking
I think that If PVE was the primary focus of the game, there wouldn't be three different kinds of PVP, team vs team, free for all and the objective-based PVP maps, which they stated they were going to expand on soon after the release, nor would they have XP and unique item rewards for PVP. They also went through the trouble of addressing the major balance issue between melee and ranged characters. I think they learned a lesson from CoH and are making sure the PVP is locked in, and that there's a good balance between the two playstyles.

Exactly! The pve'ers ran out of content and blazed. That's what I've been saying. So who was left???
Drum roolllllll.......
PVPers
PVPers have always been a major part of the community hence why they had over 2-3 forums dedicated to us. Trust me, the only reason why the devsw saw so much activity in the pve areas cause PVP granted no XP
But now that will be fixed it will be telling for the devs which activity alot of players prefer. Many will choose PVP for XP as long as its decent enough quantity

I Know i play MMO's to get away from the Real World, but there's something very troubling about someone who has made there own make believe world inside a make believe world ..... seek help
look, all they have to do is create some sort of dynamic PVE content. Stuff that changes the world and the enemies alike. PVP doesn't always make a game dynamic. Eventually PvP based games tend to favor one or two builds that work and it becomes E-Sport where everyone ends up being the same anyway...
Dynamic PvE content is all any PvE game needs. The A.I. needs to be aggressive.. Attack human safe areas and take control of starter towns or certain towns randomly, migrate to different area where they are uncommon etc..
Getting to max level and making alts is not all a PvE game has to be, but developers need to think outside the box for once to achieve this.

Once more another griefer preaching that PVP is the only thing which will make a game a sucess
1. You don't know me
There are a couple types.
Dueling-1v1. Can be initiated anywhere
Bash- Free For all "outdoors" PvP zone. It's a localized instance map you queue for that mirrors the "West Side" area of Millennium city... Last I read it supports 20 players.
Bash sounds like my style but it needs to support a lot of people like sirens call did at least

I never said that they said it was a PVE Only game please dont put words into my mouth or atleast try to comprehend what I'm saying. Its a PvE Based Game. Meaning at its core its design is for PvE. ...

Wait til you try swinging. Ever played a spiderman game?
I just watched a film that had all the travel powers that looked really wild
And yeah I saw the Swinging travel power and it reminded me of Spiderman 2. Looked really cool I must say.
