I have been thinking about playing another MMO and this one keeps getting my attention back. I have a level 80 in WoW but I am not sure if I want to keep playing WoW or not because I am getting bored with it. Should I resub to AoC or not? If not what is a good game to resub to.
*I will definately sub to SWtoR when it comes out, no question. I need a time occupier.*
Thanks!

Aoc is not a bad game these days, the quest gaps that was earlieris pretty much extinct. Raids and endgame content have been improved and fixed for a lot of bugs, sieges are still laggy, from the forums it seems like they managed to fix the crashes but introduced the old bug where defenders would respawn 800m away from the keep. So sieges is a bit fubar atm, but the rest of the content is in a decent shape.
If it is worth resubbing to is always the 1 million dollar question so to speak, because what you like might not be the same as I do, but if AoC keeps getting your attention I would say you should give it a try. The worst thing that can happen is that you find it to be not for you.
Testing the wotlk trial atm myself since I activated my wow account to see the status of it the other day and playing around with the deathknight on a PvP server, kind of interesting to compare the 2 games directly since it's like 1,5 year since I last played WoW. Both have pro's and con's, and the combat system in AoC does feel a lot more involving specially when you consider that you can fight more mobs at once. This was a lesson I learnt that wasn't too easy when starting the death knight. :P
Playing: Battlefield - Bad company (Xbox360) Arma2, DFO (PC)
On my radar: TSW, MO
MMO's played: SWG (pre cu/cu), WoW, AoC, WAR, DFO, Planetside
MMO's that I have tested: Lotro, L2, Aion, Ryzom
I would say: "Yes, resub to AoC, it is a great game.", but honestly, you need to decide for yourself.
AoC can be fun for a couple of months but its not the kind of game to be your main mmo for the long haul. Not sure when TOR is coming out but if its more than a few months, AoC probably won't tide you over.
That of course is only my opinion. However I venture to say that comparing the numbers of people who've tried the game to the numbers that remain subscribed, significantly more people than not agree with me.
I dont think you would be happy based on others expriences if you dropped WOW for AOC. AOC is still 98% the same game that it was at launch. They have a DX10 beta which plays like crap for most, and a stable DX9 client. Most players that came back for the free trial did not re-sub. Things that were broken or just annoying before the latest patch are still here. I would advise you try the free trial if you can but I would advise against re-subbing based on others and my own exprience.
Its a fun game to play for levels 1-20 and its pretty to look at but it has nothing under the hood and it gets boring and cheap realy fast.
Ive been resubbed for 3 months now after 2 previous sub cancels. The game imo has improved dramtically and Im having fun. It still has its issues, but all in all I'd say give it another try.
Played : WOW, LOTRO, COH/COV, EQ2, SWG, and WAR.
Playing EVE Online and AOC.
Wtg for SW:TOR and WOD

The above would actually be incorrect. How can a game be 98% the same when the stats and combat systems have even undergone total revamps.
Content has been added en masse and changes to performance have created a game that runs smooth for most. I have an E8400, ATI 4890, 4 gigs and run Win 7, and can hit 60fps steady and regularly in DX10, so this shows that DX10 is pretty ready to go full if it wishes.
There is a lot of conjecture in the above post, but, look at it this way. I currently play the game, and I am unsure of where the above poster is in his subscription, so just decide based on that data.
Cheers.

Yes I guess my electronic penis is smaller than yours. Good for you glad its working great. Were it the case the game is radically improved from launch you'd be able to point to the massive resurgence of the game inspite of the difficulty of launch. Given that is not the case I'd say that is because what was broken before the free trial and at launch is still largely the same broken mess. Those things which were missing, features, ideas, implements, are still not there. Save the two things I've pointed out, DX10 which is in beta, and stable performance. DX10 may work for you, but it doesn't work for a lot of people including me. I have a 9800GTX+ and do not have acceptable fps with it, while I have more than acceptable perf in Crysis, as well as in the DX9 client. The lack of voice overs, a 50 slot guild bank size, the lack of a mercenary system, or a pvp system which prevents ganking constantly, the lack of any improved AI, the lack of a community which groups, and game design which is really geared towards grouping on the same level it is geared to gimmicky single player play is a big let down. I was speaking to the OP who comes from WOW, and while WOW is dated, and doesn't look as shiny obviously the level of updating, performance, quality, size, and scope of WOW is much more valuable than AOC could be when compared. I haven't played WOW but there is no way that it could be a piss poor exprience and still hold onto the numbers of subscribing players as it does. The same is obvioulsy not the case for AOC.

I did understand. 98% of the game as it was at launch = unchanged in my (and probably most peoples) perception. So no need to re-read your post. But anyway, if you wanna nitpick, "98% the same game" is also quite a ridiculous claim. The addition of hundreds of quests, tarantia commons, Ymirs pass, PvP experience, new dungeons and raids, new game mechanics etc etc only count for 2%?

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.
I have both AoC and WoW accounts. AoC is a nice change of pace from Wow for me. AoC is a more relaxed enviroment (at least on Wiccana for me). AoC has evolved alot from its initial launch. The game is fun now.
I would recomend that you try the game yourself (free trial). I wish you good luck in whatever you decide. Btw, I am also heavily looking forward to SWToR as well. Bioware has made some great games so that gives me hope.

What percentage would you put on it? Do you think 98% is too much? How about 97%? I'll give you performance has been stabilized if you aren't doing Raids which have lag spikes, and if you aren't doing sieges which are prone to crashing, reference 3 second siege, So that's 1%.
Another thing is the stats which went from basically unintelligible and meaningless, to understandable but still mainly meaningless because other components of the game remain radically unbalanced and their passion for tweaking the balance on every patch is only exceeded by the piss poor underlying mechanics which is making those balance tweaks totally moot. So I'll give you 1 more % here.
As for new areas, well can't say the game really needed them as a high priority unless you had already tapped out all the other areas to go. So for me that wasn't a selling point. I was hoping for some features to be added, like the years supply of player suggestions they have in their very own suggestion forum which is completely ignored by the devs.
They are also still missing layers of polish when it comes to NPCs, and AI, which is weak, voice overs, hmmm 85% of quests have no vocals and yeah the immersion just drops off after tortage like a brick wall. Even in tortage the PVP system which is designed to curtail the ganking, well it is as bad as it ever was.
So want me to stop or keep going? 98% of AOC now is the same as it was months ago. AOC dev team chose to fix 1 major issue, while ignoring a whole slew of other major and critical issues, and passed the buck on smaller issues which could be fixed in a few weeks. Patches also take 3 months for delivery wat the fuck is that about? Its a monthly subfee, sholdn't we be getting monthly patches?
What new game mechanics are you talking about?

So voiceovers are more important than new zones and dungeons? To me it seems like quite a minor issue. What other MMORPG has full voiceovers? And what "other major and critical issues" are there now? The only I can think of is the Siege bug, which will be patched next week.
Also, I think it´s hard to discuss statements like "piss poor underlying mechanics" and "other components of the game remain radically unbalanced". What mechanics? What components? Why is those components unbalanced? What are those missing layers of polish on the NPCs?
With new game mechanics I was referencing to the PvP consequence system.

Wow. No one said "subscriptions" for the answer of what's going down. I'm mildly surprised.
I am a first time player and am really enjoying it. Have been playine WoW and EQ2, quit both of them. Even my 17 yr old came over, played it and got sucked in.
Very fun game, so far. We will see in the higher levels if it keeps my attention.
I was also looking for: Everything
Sorry OP your question was a fair one but if there is ONE thing Funcom did right it would be: Stir up a lot of feelings about their game - Flamefest ahead
I can only answer for my self but I suppose you wanted different peoples opinion and not a yes/no answer.
I do not consider myself a great AoC fan but I do not hate AoC either. (A few people here would probably label me as hater though.)
Originally I preordered AoC but left a week after launch in disgust. Re-tried the game 2 times (fall/winter 2008) and decided that AoC's version of PvP was just not my thing. (I enjoy GW 's version of PvP. WoW PvP not so much and AoC gank/zerg potion-popping PvP not at all.)
I re-subbed about a month ago, intending to give AoC one last chance. So far I am overall pleased with that decision. I rerolled on one of the less populated PvE servers as PvP in AoC is not my thing. I also wanted to try a server that was not too "progressed" and everything revolving about endgame and nn'th alt char.
When I logged in for the first 2 weeks I was: Hmm this server is DEAD! Basically global chat was very quiet. Maybe 3-4 players typing 2-3 lines in 2-3 hours: Dead!
But then I ran into a problem. Basically I was stuck but I did not feel it was a GM-material question so I tried global... Not a single answer in global but 7-8 people (I had never met ingame) sent tells and offered to help. VERY different from my november trial on Fury - Ask a question there and you are lucky if you get 1 decent answer. (You will however, get 3-10: L2P NOOB/Go back to WoW global responses)
Finding a server that suits you is essential. My advice is if the community annoys you in your first 2 hours on the server: Reroll on another instead of wasting several hours and leaving the game alltogether just because some servers are more "special" than others.
AoC is still (IMO) a long way from being a "great" game in many respects. A lot of people talk about nothing to do at endgame... I only have midlevel characters so in my case that does not apply.
I still have the newb-perspective on AoC. While I do acknowledge that a lot of players really like the game, it is fairly easy to see why a lot of trial players never subscribe.
AoC is basically unpolished once you get over the initial: Ahh nice graphics:
Graphics are mixed - Some great animations (most emotes) others are just... Aaaargh: Try a climbing as a mage with a staff - Staff is magically hanging unattached 40cm from your back. You are magically hanging on to a wall that is 40cm away from your hands and feet and if you change the camera angle to look up under your char you will see that there is NOTHING that attaches your lower legs to your body. (I guess the 40cm rule demanded that your thighs disappeared.)
All these "complaints" but I still resubbed? Yeah AoC does (imo) do quite a few things quite well. In its current state (still imo) AoC is ok for some casual fun for a few months.
I do no longer expect Funcom to be able to add the amount of polish I would like to keep playing for something like a year but for the next few months AoC will do with its multitude of minor annoyances. Even after that I could imagine myself resubbing in a year just to see if they ever got around to adding a customizeable UI with a better mouse-event registation.
Currently: I would say give the free trial a shot. Instead of playing maniacally to get out of Tortage, roll chars on different servers to see if there is one where you like the community. After that... A full version of AoC is cheap these days: 5-10 $ or €'s.
We dont need casuals in our games!!! Errm... Well we DO need casuals to fund and populate our games - But the games should be all about "hardcore" because: We dont need casuals in our games!!!
(repeat ad infinitum)
I love posts like this.
there is a lfg function, people use it to see who they can pvp on a map however, lfg in chat works just fine, or you can search for players to party with or be searched.
you dont like the chat interface? i kinda like how i can make multiple chat windows, other than that its pretty standard. people dont go into a game looking for the best chat system.
theres is tons of in fo about the mechanics. some dont get very specific because its really reasy to respecc and this isnt rocket science. a little trial and error never hurt anyone, and if you want to take the lazy way out, other builds are availible on the in ternet.
petty point #4 the website isnt as cool as you like....
Still havent figured out where to buy crates of 100 pots i see.....youll get there dont worry. lets not forget to try to let the logout time run out and see where that takes you...its only a 15sec wait, should give it a try once....
the ui is customizable more so than most games, very customizable, and the map is functional for anyone with half a brain.
congrats on a great petty points "i didnt bother to figure it out myself" gripe list..
lucky the game itself is fun and the pvp is intense.
if you want to know whats change in the game...heres a generalized summation:
fixed content gaps, added tons of content and are still adding more endgame contnent. complete rework of how stats and equipment work. if the game was really buggy and glitchy at launch, 98% of those problems have been fixed...the seige problem is the only standout problem left and it doesnt always happen. a rebalance of classes (vets didnt like seeing their op class nerfed but new players wont be effected)
they are patching the game like crazy, way too much to list. they plan on adding a guild leveling system along with a ranking system tied into this. more endgame content is comming. expansion is on the horizon. also we all know that funcom sticks with their games a long time which some people like.
a really fun game if you dont mind getting ganked in hot spots. pvp server is the way to go, the pve servers you level too damn fast and its missing that element of fear question alone. great pvp combat as well. roll a few characters and give white sands in tortage a spin if you want a taste of pvp hotspots in aoc...wont take long to get there and its a great place to work out the mechanics of how to pvp.
AOC is not an awful game. The company runing the development is. Their programmers are not very skilled and their team as a whole is not motivated and not being motivated to move the game along.
Critical unaddressed issues I have with that game begin with casters not having to actively manage the button pushing like melee. Additionally they are overpowered beyond that and its also a paper rock scissors balance chase with the developers. This doesn't make for a level playing field at all and all the balancing in the world isn't going to fix it when the underlying mechanics are fuxored.
The PVP consequence system is totally lacking the teeth to deter ganking. There should no murder penalty and massive XP bonus for the first atttack of a new enemy. 2nd attack should be half the XP, with a murder consequence. 3rd attack should be no XP and instead of 120 seconds of murder it shold be 60 minutes. You start ganking and you ought to be smacked for it. The murder penalties outght to be real penalties as well, and they ought to be cumulative. If you want to gank folks, you shold be paying for that for days not minutes. Of course keep the part of the system where questing and generally leaving folks alone works off your murder status. I also think that player both on PVP and PVE servers should be able to enter into consentual duels and kill each other as many times as they want for no penalty. Of course Funcom is never going to get around to that. How do I know? Because of all the other things they haven't gotten around to starting with things they promised and then just never bothered to deliver in the first fucking place like drunken brawls. Or they could implement a bounty hunters system which they havent.
Major issues...
Players have been asking since the week of launch for a bigger than 50 slot guild bank. Hasn't happened yet. A mercenary system in order to support sieges, and keep them full with 48v48 doesn't exist. The only way to get in on these sieges if your guild isn't in the top 10% of guilds with PVP points and size is to drop your guild and join a guild actively involved in a siege. WTF is that. Add to that there is no real guild customization in the game, you can't customize symbols, order of building your city based on your guilds needs, you can't set taxes or fees to help pay for resources for the city, you can't recruit with an ingame system of recruiting except for spamming chat and doing chat bots, you also can't set permissions for each rank or choose how many ranks you want for your guild. Basic stuff that has existed in MMOs for the last 3-5 years.
You also can't group for shit in AOC and because the advantages to grouping are so piss poor, substantially lower xp per hour, group areas take 2-4 hours to complete, and with only 6 members in a group instance, that is too long!
Other issues...
Siegs Instability
Lag spikes 500ms redbaring still fucking occurs.
Ability to skip tortage for you know in case you are playing it for the 15th time
Resource balancing, why does it take 7 days to harvest enough stuff for the T1 city, a month and a half to get the T2 city done, and 6-9 months for a T3 city?
AoC is still a very competitive game for a casual player, it lacks serious Hardcore lastability right now but in time if they expand it right who knows
I would like to know from the AoC haters what is this amazing game they all play that is like paradaise of MMOs because I would love to come play to.
I played a great many MMOs over the years..they all fail eventually because everyone gets bored at some stage of the same thing every day. AoC is a fun game it just lacks depth of a 20 expansion EQ or WoW at present. But it definatly has the potential to get there. Its a game I resub to and would continue to come back and see just needs to get to the expansion stage add a new race and so on..
Conan also has a film coming out next year that may help rehype the game if its in a good state by then.
Thank you for responding. Yet it seems you missed some points entirely: I re-subbed to AoC despite my few "petty points".
IMO the PvP in AoC is not interesting at all. Great that others enjoy it but to me it is not the kind of PvP I am looking for. Because of that I deliberately chose to play on a PvE server.
You actually managed to point out everything that I was wrong about, calling me lazy and unintelligent in the process, yet not providing one single solid answer. I guess that may be considered an accomplishment by some.
We dont need casuals in our games!!! Errm... Well we DO need casuals to fund and populate our games - But the games should be all about "hardcore" because: We dont need casuals in our games!!!
(repeat ad infinitum)
This game has suffered from "hype" from the very beginning. The last thing it needs is more "hype".
What the game needs is a decent community, better programmers and a company to run it that won't lie and overhype the game into oblivion.
Oh, did I mention community? That is the worst feature of the game.
I recently started playing and was having a grand time, the game, for me anyway, was a blast to play. After 2 days though I have spent the past week trying to get the game to work again...when it does start working though I will be right back in it and enjoying the time.
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
Well things are diffrent on the pve servers. Its a much diffrent game without open world ffa pvp. The picky gripes i was commenting on was more aimed towards people who do that with any game, you guys take the game so seriously, if you play the game to just have fun then a lot of little things go unnoticed. Also with a lot of gripes about aoc, such as the mini maps and customizable ui are things that make the game unique. Its like (not saying your doing this) complaining that you want a game that isnt like wow, but then bitching about how the games features are not like wow in every way.
wasnt trying to say you were that guy, its more a general comment.
Who cares? G4 is playing Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer right now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
