Ok lets give this char a rest and change to my other char... Ahh I have to quit the game entirely and restart to change char?
What about waiting for that 15 seconds logout sequence to end? Amazes me how many people have not figured this. Even the columnist on this site. Do not be afraid to ask. Guild members are usually valuable source of info usually.
For the best Conan experience, the choice of the server is extremely important. Gameplay and community can be different like night and day on (RP) PVP and PVE servers. Also the size of community does wonders. Less populated servers are by no means less valuable.

Ahh nice with the 15sec logout screen. But my point is: Why the **** do we have to figure something like this out? Where is this documented in the online manual? What is the point of a 15sec logout timer in the first place?
About server choice: Agree 100%. I am happy that I chanced rolling on Blackscar. (PvE server considered dead by most.)
@crunchyblack: Sorry if I sounded offended. I am not. I understand what you are saying but please... In my opinion, there are quite a few AoC fans that have turned completely paranoid and just NEED to be able to pin that "hate" badge on anyone not seeing things their way. Sadly they (imo) end up scaring more prospective players away than they lure in.
Oh and about the UI: I am extremely unimpressed by WoW's builtin UI. But the AoC could (and should) have looked at and stolen ideas from EQ, GW and more. There are a lot of older games out there with FAR superior UI's and chatinterfaces.
While drastic changes might be impossible at this time (hardcore fans are used to AoC's look and feel) their current general UI and specifically their chat interface will NOT impress any newcomers.
We dont need casuals in our games!!! Errm... Well we DO need casuals to fund and populate our games - But the games should be all about "hardcore" because: We dont need casuals in our games!!! (repeat ad infinitum)
Timer is there so the people can't jump out off combat (whether PVP or PVE) without consequences. I think everybody understands the reasons. If you choose to skip this sequence, your character would still end up hanging in the world for some time.
MMO's are usually pretty complex and ever-changing. I am not sure it would be possible to maintain complete up-to-date documentation about all the features, and that you would really read it. RTFM is just a myth

The 15 second logout is something I have always believed was intended to avoid players from abusing the system. If you could taunt another player and in a second log out, and then log in with your higher lvl to whack the mole you would get heeps of complaints from tricked players.
Another reason could be that it would reduce immersion into a character if you could swap around too fast.
I always start tapping my fingers when waiting for logout, but I still believe it is working as intended. Maybe I'm just a too compliant customer.
To OP, Personally I'd say go for it! I also look forward to trying out SW:ToR when it launches, but I feel that AoC is much more than a temporarily game for my mmo fix. After being a guild officer and 24-7 raider in WoW, I enjoy the way AoC let's you log in for some quick action without spending hours on organising a guild happening. With the rate that AoC has improved since it's botched launch, I am equally stoked on what they will bring next as I am on a new game taking my interest.
Edit: I seem to have fogged up the quoting in an attempt to compress the text. Sorry!
Do not worry about subs, servers are far from deserted. General servers if you like higher populations, RP if you prefer more subtle communities. I have no experience with those fresh start servers tho.
I would definitely recommend AoC do anyone. It is a very decent game to pass some free time with.
Think of AOC as a burning Japanese Zero in world war II. The pilot has a choice of jumping to his death or riding the plane down and crashing and burning. So far Funcom is riding the plane down.

The trouble for AoC lovers id that the end result is the same, you have one dead pilot and a crashed plane going up in flames. But if we're going to use WW2 I'd compare the situation to the battle of the river plate. The captain of the Graf Spee has three choices,
1: Surrender to the British (F2P)
2: Scuttle the ship (shut down)
3: Make a run for it and fight his way out (get blown out of the water then go to choice 1, or maybe win and/or get home)
At the moment we've had a change of Captain and he's making a go of running the blockade. However his ship is losing men fast and taking heavy damage from the British warships chasing him. He can out run them for a while but his long term problem is he won't be able to navigate his way to a friendly port before the British sink his ship, and he knows it. He has too many minefields to negotiate, enemy ships waiting for him ahead, he can't turn back as he's being chased and he doesn't have enough crew to initiate repairs on current problems let alone a future breakdown that he knows is inevitable! Fuel and ammunition is running low and morale has hit the floor, Craig is also worrying about a possible mutiny and that the Fatherland no longer cares about his ship as they're concentrating on building the Bismark and him getting home is merely a minor plus now.
Also his first officer is getting ready to jump ship onto "HMS Mortal Online" at the first opportunity!
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"

I'll summarise for those who couldn't be bothered reading Agricola's post:
"I know nothing whatsoever about the game as it is now or it's state, but I made up a little story!"
The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

To me, it matters less that it is possible or not. The problem for me is that it is not documented or explained anywhere that this is possible. I shouldn't have to ask other people for help with such a simple thing. This should be made very obvious by the interface. You shouldn't have to wonder. And for that matter, it shouldn't be such an odd thing that you need to do. Do the thing to log out, but if you wait instead of exiting straightaway, something totally different happens. It is stupid, and it was added in as an afterthought because they weren't clever enough to think of this need. It's not a great game. It plays well, and the Tortage quests are fun, but afterwards it is quite dull.
Worse than that is the community. They are the most depraved, rude, horrible people I have ever seen gathered together. There will be constant invitation to join guilds, just because they want to increase their numbers, not because they care at all about helping people. And you can't ask questions, or talk to anyone, because the community seems to be composed primarily of small children and angry basement men.
I beseech you not to waste your time.

As Davit says Pop is pretty good at the moment on most servers.
There was a 24 hour demo at release called tortage that did nothing but mislead people as to what was comming later.
Also Davit is a liar and his job is in jeapordy if he works for Funcom, you demonstrated 100k + people came back during trials, even more during win backs. However, 100k+ people then left the game because of it's shortcomings within weeks of trying it. All of these people were mostly on 3 USA and 3 EU servers so today all the three servers are half full? Just wait till after the X pac for the next server mergers.
IDK if I could call half full at best servers as only 2 are, the rest are basicaly empty. In business school I learned this:
Guy 1 tells guy2 OMG your storage sheds are almost sold out you have 75% of them sold!
Guy 2 says: the profits are in the "ALMOST"
However, in AoC's case the serveres are not even close to almost anything, pop wise.
------------------
Other MMOs that were made good are comming out so AoC's small pop will contionue to decline because aside from a few forum trolls few are loyal to this game.
