i have mixed feelings. sometimes it feels too linear, other times i can really tell a lot of effort was put into the game. if it was F2P i'd be all over it, but i'm unemployed right now so i can't afford it.  the thing i don't like about aion is how all your skills are pretty much handed to you and your character is exactly like everyone else's. it's not really a thinker's game, it's better suited for spacing out and killing time mindlessly. overall as far as MMO's go i would say it's a little above average.

EDIT: i'll also add that i played lineage 2 at release and for 3-4 months and had a lot more fun with it. WoW and Lineage 2 had a child and named it Aion.

This I can agree with. I suppose Im getting too old, because this game just feels like deja vu to me. At first it feels kinda like wow with the questing, and then after 20 it feels like DAOC. Its an enjoyable game, just feels like what they say it is, nothing really new, just a whole lot of polish...

    Cheers!

Having fun. And the game gets even better with the 3 major patches we will get at release.

I played for the first time last night. Played for 7 hours and loved it!

I am a big fan of old Camelot RvR... so I am hoping to really enjoy the end game here as well with fortress and keep sacking and defending :)

Will have to see how it all pans out, but so far so great for me!

I love this game... so far.

I understand alot the gripes people had about it tho.

The no swimming thing, is kinda annoy but hardly worth complaining about.

The starter zones are kinda linear, and the quests without a doubt are.

The starting flight time of 60 seconds is kinda short. Gliding should be unlimited.

I don't like the fact that there is only one starter per side, and they feel kinda same-ish

I thought levels 1 thru 10 were ok, but the game didn't hook me until I hit about Level13 with my 1st toon.

I don't like the idea having to run the starter zones again when leveling another toon, because they got old fast.

Ok the 1st time thru, no so much later.

I love the combat in the game, how it flows, it's just fun.

The Graphic are good, and the client is well made.

    Flying and gliding is fun.

I like that encourages grouping without forcing it.

Ok this made me feel much better, because I'm about to die of boredom in these first 10 levels and I had heard it gets much better.  I'm just a MAJOR group person and the first 10 levels in that zone and solo are boring me to tears, but I'll keep going cause I've heard after that its much more fun.

I pretty much agree with your statement except for two things:

First, I don't  like the soloability of it.  I really don't even see how grouping is even encouraged because unless you're with some like minded, reasonable souls that don't feel like trying to fight each other over kills or you're playing with friends why would you?  I'm not saying that I want it the opposite way either but I think you could be eased into some group content it a bit more than they do in this game.  Really feels like you're playing a solo rpg game for the first 17 to 18 levels.

Second, I like this game not love it :)

Other than that I think your post covers things quite well.

EDIT: Eh, I don't think the combat in this game really stands out.  Even with the chain skills it still seems like the same old rigamarole to me.  Which is fine by me but I don't find it to be anything real noteworthy.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

I must say, I really loved my experience. From the grouping (which, even at a low level I found was TONS), the graphics, animations, game play, community (actually good? in a MMO?), almost everything I just loved. My Girlfriend sat down (I plan to be rolling with her) and I had to fight her to play... they just did all the little things that makes it great IMO.

Its not revolutionary by any stretch... and I even found that the wings did little/nothing in terms of actual/normal game play (With a few exceptions). Overall, although there was a few bugs I noticed I was so impressed with the gameplay that I have zero regrets about preordering. Honestly - I can see how its not for everyone. And even the first 10 levels are fairly slow going... but once you get the hang of it and get out to 10+ its just fantastic. Its what I was looking for in an MMO.

There's a few things that kinda annoy me (no swimming for example) but they aren't enough for me to warrant not playing the best MMO I've played since I can remember....

I'm enjoying the game so far, but the lag is really killing it for me this weekend.  I wonder if they'll have that sorted out by launch.

I had random lag on occassion but nothing that totally drove me crazy. Worry not Im sure that'll all be fixed by launch.

The game still has a month before its released... Im not concerned at all - and in fact I have a feeling it'll be even better come September. I can't wait for the pre-start :)

It is too soon to know if I will stick with the game but for right now it is fun and enjoyable and worth my time to play it. Sticking with it will depend upon how well the high end of the game flows.

For people that complain about the lack of low end content that is fair enough but not really the point. Look at all the awesome and mostly empty zones in WoW and while it made it a lot more interesting for leveling my alts outside of that the low end zones in any game really are a place where you shouldn't be spending all that much time.

The racist or at least very poorly phrased questions about how Asian the game is are just tiresome. Yes the game has an Asian feel and influence and if you don't like it then that is fair enough but it's a bit like complaining that Night Elves are too tall. To a certain extent game developers can't win with some people right now. If they game uses fairly standard western mythology and character design they get accused of cloning WoW and if they go with something else they get accused of not catering to the Western tastes.

One aspect of WAR that I enjoyed early on were the RvR battles and had a lot of fun in them but at later levels the game became unplayable because of unbalanced character design. You might criticize Aion for each player side being the same but that means the game starts well balanced and with the character appearances being comparable there will be less likelyhood of a server full of trolls and goblins with no humans to fight.

Where the PvPvE aspect of the game will become interesting and potentially a problem is for those people/groups/guilds that like to raid and don't want a challenge that they can't control. What I found grindy in most PvE games such as WoW (but not only WoW) was the learn a raid fight and then do it over and over to get the loot. People for some reason don't want to actually be good and still fail at a raid. With PvPvE you can have the boss tactics down perfect and still lose because the humans on the other side are smarter/luckier/faster/better than you. This aspect and how much fun it will be is what is going to determine if people stay with Aion and if more join.

For me the do or die aspect of DFO PvP is too hardcore and the ritualized PvP of WoW is too limiting and repetitive. The completely unbalanced PvP of Eve online is too much like real warfare to be called PvP even though it can be a lot of fun. So,  I am hoping that the PvPvE in Aion will hit that balance of being fun without being either too much like a video game or too hardcore.

If you are pure PvE player then this game is probably not going to be your idea of fun and if so then something like LotRO is probably a better choice. Hardcore players are already in DFO so no point talking to them 8-) and the people that like a more controlled structure to their PvP (waiting queues for arenas and BGs anyone?) should go with WoW as it has an awesome PvE and a nicely managed PvP design.

Having played this in the beta for some time now I would like to make a comment on the grind and if you have ever had to grind faction to be able to get a key to be able to attend a raid then Aion is a piece of cake. Yeah they have repeatable quests where you can just do the same thing over and over for a reward but no one is forcing you to do them. From level 1 to level 20 there really isn't any time where you have to stay in one zone and just kill the same mob hundreds of time though you certainly could do it if you wanted to. Yeah the beginning to Aion is very linear but the advantage of that is that it does get you through the first levels with a minimum of fuss and lets you learn how to play your character.

People should avoid all the negativity from people that haven't even played the game and positivity from the other people that are over hyping it as both sides seem mainly interested in everything other than actually playing the game.

Yes, ive played 3 Closed Betas now and dont want to play too much, saving myself for headstart. I like the Crafting. Im taking sewing as im a Ranger and its good how you can grind Mats and experience, the grinding dosent get so repetative when your waiting for drop.

I actually hate that aspect of the crafting in this game.  Although hopefully I can just purchase what I need from others.  The drop rate leaves a bit to be desired in my opinion.

I've been playing MMOs since near the beginning of MMO time and I personally don't see why people dislike this game so much.  The way I see it they're just using innovation (or the lack there of) as a tool to flame the game because it's become so popular so fast.  Sure it's just like every other MMORPG out there, but how do you really expect innovation to play a role in a RPG?  There's only so much they can change.  I personally like Aion granted I've not played it all that much mainly because I'm waiting for the Pre-Launch.  Sure the quests are generic "Kill X number of Y Mob" or "Take X item to Y NPC" quests, but again what do you expect?  If you have better ideas for quests, most game devs are always open to suggestions from their players about how to make the game more enjoyable for them.  Also I personally like linear starter areas as they allow me to learn how to play on my first toon, and then allow me to level through it quickly on all my alts since I already know how to do everything.  I must agree though, my main gripe about the game is the lack of swimming though I'm hoping they'll add it in in a later patch.  I also don't like how my computer can barely run it, but I was expecting as much.

Well, I'w white and non-asian, so I guess I get extra points. I have played the last two betas, and tried several classes. Yes I like it. The lower levels, as one poster said, make you want to slam your head against a wall. Not sure I could do it violently, as I'm pretty slow. After years of playing mmo, one can only take so much of "go kill 5 of x" or run back to talk to so ans so when you just ran 5 minutes from there. Overall, I like it alot.

Although it's not a great leap forward I am certainly enjoying the game.

The graphics are really nice and I am really pleased with the character customisation.

All the games I've tried recently have had one or two aspects where they really blew. So far I have not encountered any major gripes with Aion which is a good thing for me at this stage.

I'm more excited by FFXIV, but I'm pretty sure I'll be playing Aion until then, and perhaps longer, we'll see.

  • UbieUbie Member Posts: 185

I have enjoyed myself during beta. Aion has beautiful graphics, few bugs, stable, and entertaining gameplay. With so many disappointing MMOs released in the last 18 months we're due for a descent one.

There needs to be an Advice Chat or help chat. I been playing it and tons of solo players on it. The game looks great and after lvl 16 it get very fun. Im going to give it a cap toon and see what happens. If I get in a good guild I may stay around. But I can see why ppl like this game, there are few bugs from what I have seen.
