I like both Wizardry and Sabbicats comments. I am definitely playing this and no other MMO, but what is the point of Alpha if not to express what you so far are unimpressed with and would like to see changes. Yea, but when your problem's with it seem to be nothing more then a "dumb target reticule"... you need to relax, and go outside the house more often. On top of it, SE is limiting what we see right now... it's not like their going to show us the uber stuff just yet.. patience people patience. Game isn't supposed to come out for another 1+ year's.

Are you the same guy that tried running that conspiracy theory about SE being out of money? I think the appropriate term is "lawlz".
Great to see some actual gameplay footage. I'll be more interested when/if these videos get translated and I can actually understand what the point was for SE to show off these clips. I doubt very much that it was to show off the awesome combat.
Hate to say it but i was a little dissapointed with these video's. The images they released looked so beautifull and amazing, while with the actual gameplay dosen't look as apealing as I thought it would be. Anyhow I know this game is far from finished, and there will be many changes to come. Can't wait to see what's next.

Good grief, Wizardry.
It's still in ALPHA. That's pre-beta.. Everything is still in development and/or early testing stages. This is nowhere *near* final release state. A *lot* can, and likely will, change before it gets into players' hands at beta.. not to mention retail.
Come on.. this is SE.. not some two-bit, wanna-be amateur developer working on their first product.
And actually... I got the impression that someone else was playing it and the German guy was talking about it as he played. That's typically what happens at shows like that.

You don't seem to understand what an Alpha is.
Graphics at this stage are often merely placeholders for development purposes, while the final, higher-quality versions are worked on. Similarly, the animations being "jerky" are also quite likely the result of placeholder animations and/or movement code that's still being tweaked. In any case, they're not the final version you'll see in the retail release.
I'll ask again... knowing that it's being worked on by SE, and not due to launch until sometime next year... do you *really* think that video resembles what the final product will be like? Do you *really* think SE is going to look at that and say "it's perfect.. ship it as is"? Because that's what your reactions seem to indicate.
Sure they can fix the HITBOX,but why on earth ,LIKE I SAID,if you actually read my post PROPERLY,would they screw up the hit box and allow mobs and players to move into each other, after they got it right in FFXI and ALL the rest of their games? This is obviously a CHANGE they made,it has NOTHING to do with Alpha, please,i have heard that excuse a million times ,using your own words ..."it wears me out" lame excuses like that, especially if you are an experienced FF player ,you would have seen this OBVIOUS change for the worse.
Actually.. it could have everything to do with Alpha. Again, you're assuming that what you see on screen is representative of the final product. A lot can and will change. Relax.
And even if they *do* change it in some way and it's not the way it was in FFXI.. You not liking it doesn't mean SE "screwed up". It mean... they tried something different, and you don't like it.
Instead of lame remarks like that other poster"mr.stupid"he says? ,try pointing out anything POSITIVE from ANY of those videos?i cannot, the German guy was awful and what i saw IN the videos was bad,NOTHING to do with CLEARITY from hand helds, had to repeat that some people fabricate their own input from my posts. To further show how lame that comment was ,i could use a handheld phone on FFXI and it would not change the gameplay ANY at all,how does clearity change gameplay?Does it change how the player and mob move into each other?does it change the HIT BOX?Does that reticule all of a sudden dissappear?
It's understandable that you don't like what you see so far... but a far more rational response would be "Man I hope that's not the direction they're going" or "I hope that's cleaned up by the time the game comes out".
Your response of "OMG quirky movement, different hit boxes and lame looking reticules... What are they thinking?!?!" is both premature and a bit hysterical.
PLEASE give me your knowledge on what you saw in these videos instead of making up BS about my comments,i want to hear your educated knowledge on these videos,so i can see where these comments are coming from,ESPECIALLY from the guy who says "mr.stupid" i am sure he has some briliance to share?
Well.. to me, I see a limited demo of a game, based on a very early build of it (relative to launch) that shows what the overall gameplay will be like, but that still has some quirks and issues and "clunky" elements to it... which is what I would expect from a game in that stage of development. All in all, it looks very promising to me.
TREPO...I am not polluting a thread ,i am commenting on what i see in those videos as NOT showing anything positive to look forward to,i am well aware as to what they were trying to show, and i really do not think POLISH will change any of what i disliked about those videos.
It demonstrates that you are jumping the gun and assuming that what you see there is a close representative of what the final product will be like.

Random comments about the videos (yeah I know it's alpha) and other people's posts:
The world detail and general animations do look very "realistic", which is nice.
The super-speed footwork of the Lalafell is a bit silly IMO... they should name them LOLafell
The reticule is distracting. Either put it on the ground (oh noes it's a WoW clone!) or go back to the pointer over the head.
I'm not concerned about the jerky motions. I'm sure SE will work that out. Warhammer was plagued by those kind of problems even after release but they got it fixed eventually, and I have way more confidence in SE than Mythic.
No new races (so far) /sigh.
I hope the mouse is more for adjusting the UI rather than using for actual game play. It's fine for PC-onry games but not console based games. I will be playing on a PC, but I prefered using a USB controller with FFXI and never touched the mouse.
I'm not sure how some of you are drawing conclusions about combat speed. It looks to me like during the combat scenes the people demoing the game are talking (about how combat works maybe?) rather than actually trying to show how fast combat can be.
Waaaaaaay too early to pass judgment on the game based on those videos.

I was thinking the same thing.
When they actually show off gameplay i'm sure it will be pretty impressive and not just the first few levels of abilities

My advice is to just ignore him. As a matter of fact I think I may make use of the block feature soon since all this guy does is talk trash...Wizardry you're starting to sound like a child. Stop.
Back on topic. I thought the videos looked good. The graphics were excellent. I do agree that the run animation seemed a tad choppy or something when the character tried to strafe/turn although it's only alpha footage and I have no doubt they'll work on that. The other kind of distracting thing was the box popping up in the middle of the screen. I'm not sure what that is though so I'll reserve my judgement. The combat speed looks like it will be good. Overall the videos I agree were a bit uninspiring but I see these videos as merely a first look to show the basics of the game. Just to really show how the game looks. I can't wait for more information and some official videos from SE coming out that really shows off the gameplay and combat!
I really can't wait until this beta starts. I will be in it whether I have to pull a metal gear solid and old snake my way into someone's house and steal their codes or get in legit i'll be there running in circles screaming OMG OMG OMG OMG. I will be that guy, and be damn proud to be him.
I like both Wizardry and Sabbicats comments. "Its only Beta stage man, its not done!" and then the game will be released and you will be saying " OH" .
You've got the wrong idea.
By definition:
The alpha build of the software is the build to the internal software testers, that is, people different from the software engineers, sometimes to the public, but usually internal to the organization or community that develops the software.
What the FFXIV demo amounts to is a "peek" of how the game is coming along behind the scenes.
The reason things are in these stages is for us to look at them and express our opinions, nothing wrong with that. No.. they're in this phase because it's part of the software development cycle. Alpha stage is not a "public participation" stage of the process.
As long as we aren't name calling and hating, which Wizardry was not the first to do, then we are doing what SE wants us to do. He was stating how he felt about Alpha material, hoping for a response from others, not people to brush his comment off stating "Its only alpha stage, take nothing for granted". Well obviously there are things to comment about in the Alpha stage and SE wants that type of feedback. So Wizardrys comments are far more helpful then SE fans slightly over excited and ready to bash people who have criticisms of aspects of the game so far.
Sure you can share an opinion of how the Alpha content looks for the sake of discussion... Nothing wrong with that. However, SE is demonstrating a small portion of the game to show how given parts of it will function; in this case, they seem to be showing the battle system and what looks like the basics of the Guildleve system.
He is not trolling, he is an FF fan, criticising things he sees, hoping for a change. Not sitting quietly, hoping for a change come Beta. He's lashing out about everything, as though the way it is now is the way it will be and, in that, he's off-mark. And not only in this thread... He leaped to some pretty wildly unfounded conclusion in another thread as well.
If it were public Beta and things looked clunky... yes... I could understand. If it were retail release and things were clunky, I'd be right there with him saying "WTF is this, SE?". However, at this point, criticizing what you see - especially with as much, ahh.. "spirit"... as Wizardry has been - is kinda pointless. Chances are great that a lot of what you see in that vid is going to be quite different come launch.
I don't know exactly when that video was released - I doubt it's beta because, if it were, it would be closer to what the retail game looks like. This is most likely a very early demonstration; not unlike the FFXIV Alpha demo. Point is... You can see several things in that video that are not as they were in FFXI at launch. Goobues do not eat Mandragoras. Animations were "stiffer" than they are in the retail game. Some of the armor is not seen in the game... The official logo wasn't even in place yet.
All I'm saying is... Do not mistake Alpha with Beta. Beta is when player/tester feedback is requested by the developers, but at that point, the game (or whatever it might be) is considered content and code complete for launch. The only changes to take place are bug fixes, etc.
During Alpha, everything is internal and much of what's there is still place-holder for production and is ultimately replaced. The developer is not seeking outside feedback at this point because much of what they're showing likely isn't its final form yet... It would be like watching someone laying in the base values for a painting and telling them the painting isn't detailed enough and needs more color. The painter knows this... you're simply looking at a work-in-progress.

If we accept everything in Alpha with the view "Its only alpha stage man!" then nothing will be changed in Beta and then ... "Its only Beta stage man, its not done!" and then the game will be released and you will be saying " OH" .
The reason things are in these stages is for us to look at them and express our opinions, nothing wrong with that.
He is not trolling, he is an FF fan, criticising things he sees, hoping for a change. Not sitting quietly, hoping for a change come Beta.

Did anyone notice the running animation of that little fellow? It was as if he was running for his life, hilarious!
Yeah? What pictures were so amazing ? Link plz.
Oh yay! this is what I have been waiting forl for awhile. I was surprised when I woke up this morning to see this thread/vdeos
The game looks great, I'm really looking forward to seeing some mage power soon so I hope they show some spells xD
Also hope they show something on Gridania :x
But yeah the game looks brilliant, already looks pretty polished to be in alpha stage.
Looks amazing!
This has been an incredible day for me so far. I'm so happy for this news you have no idea!!
Lalafell ftw!

Who said anything about the quality of the game looking at it through hand held devices?I already said it will have the quality of of looks of FFX and onwards, that is good quality. All the points i made are valid and did NOT look good,i am not talking about CLEARITY lmao you "wear me out" with comments like that.
What has ALPHA got to do with anything i mentioned? That dumb looking reticule will dissappear come release?Let me guess the CLEARITY was making those side to side jerky movements?

I was thinking the same thing.
When they actually show off gameplay i'm sure it will be pretty impressive and not just the first few levels of abilities
Couldnt have said it better myself. Thanks for saying it!

Im sure that SE will be taking feedback about what people who played those games at Gamescon thought.
