According to a statement made from an aion dev they don't have much confidience in their game beating WoW. Thats like saying why even try when we can't win, lol. So I guess now they have a reason to fall short in their game. I guarantee this will lead to them working less and less on the game and providing subpar content.
What type of company settles for second place? What type of person doesn't want to be first? Plus, this is sort of saying: "Yeah, it probably isn't as good as WoW but we're okay with that." And that's the wrong message to send to customers. Shooting for second place was the strategy of Warhammer and that failed hard, so I see aion following the trend.

So what is wrong with being 2nd ?? Its a smart move and who can really beat WoW ??? Like saying Honda should stop making cars because they will never beat Toyota ??? How about Apple being 2nd to Microsoft???
Played Aoc/DDO/FFXI/WAR / LoTRo / CO / Aion
Playing Rift
Waiting for FFXIV to be the game it should. so sad =(
You really so scared of Aion that they will succeed? because every post i read from you is the same rubbish, and now you even start making topics about it
I fail to see how that translates into what you wrote. Maybe because If you gather all the facts and information that we know to be true about the market ... what you wrote really doesnt make sense.
Just putting aion fanbois in there place

It really depends on how you view "Beating WoW". I'm pretty sure the Dev just meant that he didn't think they would beat WoW in suscribers, which is kind of impossible since it's been out for much longer and has gotten many loyal fans over the years. Aion could still be "better", but it doesn't mean it has to have more suscribers.
It's better than all of these game companies claiming they will overtake WoW and then failing miserably.
What rank WoW or any other game holds in the MMO world is 100% subjective. While WoW may have the most subscriptions of any other game currently, that does not make it the best game on the market. Hell, look at pop music. Most of it is manufactured shite that is spewed out onto the masses, and they love it. This does not mean the music is actually good, it just means it's popular and easily accessible.
My point is go pick a game you like to play and play it. Who cares how many other subscribers there are when you are going to ultimately interact with a few thousand of them anyway? I use the word 'interact' lightly here due to the current theme-park mmo designs.
A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.
Have a link saying that?

Stop trolling dude that is not what he said.
So in your mind, every general store, fast food restaurant, or coffee shop has to claim that it will be more successful than Wal-Mart, McDonalds, or Starbucks, respectively?
That's just foolish. Go back to FunCom and Mythic where they hype their game to be the second coming of the messiah.

So they are shooting for second place in a market that Korean games have never really done well in. Comming out and saying that you are going to storm in and take the market with one game and knock off the most successful game ever is not only stupid in the end it will only make your company look worse when you fail to achieve your bloated unrealistic goal. NCSoft knows what they are doing although Korean games have historically never done well in the US they are aiming for this market and NCSoft knows how to polish a game. On top of that NCSoft's game content patches for the rest of their games have always been free look at Lineage 2 that game has been limping along for years but they still release huge content packs and expansions that are free to subscribers. I have some confidence that this game will do well based on beta testing as well as speaking to a lot of people that have tried it and really like it. I see no problem with aiming for second place it is still a good place to be in the market.
Only an idiot would claim that they can beat WoW at this point. Guess they are not idiots. Your point?
Once Starcraft 2 comes out all the koreans are going to dump this game then this game will be lucky to be in the top 10.

What I gathered from the whole statement is that he expects to be 2nd in subscribers only to WoW, and lets be honest, it's pretty damn near imposable for a P2P game to beat WoW in terms of subscribers.
How about: they are concentrating on having a good release! As long as they make a profit, I don't think they are worried about beating WoW. They know that, as far as numbers, once you hit a certain point, you will just roll under your own momentum. When WoW broke 3 million, that was it as far as any other game, at the time, having a chance to have greater numbers. This gave them the money to hire better QC, more CS, and more devs, which just kept the machine rolling.
Aion does have that momentum going for them in Asia. They just need to translate that to success here. Considering the hype, and the fact that they got to work out the bugs in Asia, it would take a major technical FUBAR for them to fail to be a success. I think they are playing smart in just aiming for a good, polished game. That will get them what they want.
Personally, I don't want Aion to be #1. I could just imagine the retards here talking about every game coming out two years hence as an Aion rip off, saying how Aion's numbers can't be argued with; while the other side would be crying how Aion ruined the industry, and calling fans "Aionerds" or something as stupid as "WoW-tard".
I think the comment was in reference to the western market. Is there a point somewhere in this thread?

Yeah and any MMO developer in the next 5-10 years saying they are gonna beat WOW will fail.
He aslo said that it will hopefuly be just as sucessful as WOW too.
I just read two of your replies in another thread, it seems your trying very hard to troll the game. You can stick with playing wow, but do you really need to post over and over again to just troll for no reason?
1) Aion could potentially do better then WOW, but the Aion fanbase doesnt really care if it does or doesnt.
2)your gurantees are nothing but assumptions and rants because it seems your threatened by Aion potentially being a success. Its okay, you will get over it some day.
3) Companies like NCsoft do not generally settle for anythnig less then the best they can do. However given Blizzards size in the MMO market second place is a good target...for now. Remember Aion is just launching and WoW is getting up there in years.
4) Warhammer did not fail in the least. It was a good game that needed alot of fixes to be really really good. But in no way has warhammer failed overall as a game. It has failed at certain expectations maybe...but failed completely I dont think so.
5) That statement was a guess, no developer truely knows how well they are going to do. In my eyes that statement was paying respect to Blizzard in general. Besides why over promise and under deliver like many other games have done? Its better to under promise and over deliver. If Aion ends up going to #1 (which is possible) it will exceed their original estimate. But in no way does that statement show any negative trends with the company.
On a side note, if you havent dont research or played the game, please dont automatically assume you know what your talking about.
P.S. +1 cookie for the troll.

If there is an mmo going to get hurt from startcraft then i think it will be WoW
Well first off, I'm 90% sure your wrong.
Okay sure they know there not going to get as many sub's as WoW during there first month, months, or probably even years,(Hell theirs a good chance they'll never get as many subs) but that won't affect there in game content. (as long as the game won't compleatly crash)
I'm sure Aions soul perpous was not to beet WoW. Instead i believe there developers made a great game and want to expand there audiance to the west. Honestly though did you ever think there just trying to make a good game that will gain more players while maintaining there already loyal ones? I'm sure WoW's standing in the MMO market has nothing to do with how this game will turn out.
Its ok to play a subpar game (aion), just show some respect to the king (WoW).

respect for a game? lol
I play it as long as it is fun otherwise it goes faster from my HD then it went on it
I don't care if it "beats" wow or not. I am done with wow and I'm moving on. I just want Aion to be a good game that is fun to play. I like what I've seen so far, I'm just hoping that the game continues to build on what I see as a good foundation in the game so far: Good graphics, awesome character renders and animations, nice ammount of customizability for the way your toon looks, interesting lore, cool looking areas, classes seem decently balanced (just a little tweaking and it'll be good) and so far a nice community just to name a few. They need to fix the lag but hey it's pretty early on and they are just putting up the NA servers. Pretty sure 1.5 help with some of the lag problems anyways.
Also, maybe they don't think it's worth it to go head to head with Blizz in the NA/EU market right now anyways? I'm starting to think that NCsoft's global strategy isn't to take out WoW with a singular game but with multiple games aka Aion hitting hard in Asian markets and also being released NA/EU and then Guild Wars 2 hitting hard in NA/EU markets. Either way, I am just happy to see more competion headed to the MMO market with GW2, FFXIV, Global Agenda, MO, SWTOR and others. Publishers should have to work for my $15 a month subscription and that goes for Aion as well.
