How do you guys get good at MMORPG's?

Twinfun5Twinfun5 Member UncommonPosts: 4

Hey everybody!

I have played alot of MMO's, and some I make it pretty far in, but my question is: How do people get good at MMO's so quickly? In CBT's and OBT's, players seem to know so much about the game already. The most time I put into a single MMO has been Twelve Sky 2, with my 112, but it seems that people always know so much more about the game than I do by the time I reach that stage. Where my character build may feature many mistakes, or I'm never as decked out as other people my level, other players seem to have the perfect character layout, and all the best gear. How do they do it? Most people tell me that joining a guild of experience MMO gamers makes a difference, but how do they get so much information in such a short period of time? My main goal is to become a merchant player in at least one MMO, as I have never been "rich" in any MMO I have ever played.

Thanks in advance!

Dedication and a hint of stalking the trajectory of the game.

for levelling:  find and try all the quests, find the ones (there is always one in every zone) that lead nowhere and are a waste of time and avoid them.  Find which quests go well together and above all remember how to quickly and effectively complete them

for character optimisation:  test all abilities on all mobs and find the best combo's and moves.  Find comfortable tactics for the class that allow you to keep a constant barrage of dps without completely draining your power.

for PvP:  same as above but change it to suit PvP (maybe you need at least half your mana/energy incase you are jumped).

thats for anyone who is in the beta.  As for those who arent in a beta but are still pro, it's usually experiance (most games are pretty similar in the way they spread out quests) and/or guides.

So yeah, if you want to get good you pretty much have to focus on one character and work hard to learn the best moves/combinations

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

Getting knowledgeable can sometimes be as easy as just asking others.  Whenever I play a character type that I do not ordinarily play, I do not hesitate to call out in advice channels for advice as to what I should do, etc.   I am currently playing LotRO and there are frequent requests for advice and information from people which generate a lot of serious responses.  So, if your MMO has a good community, just asking is all you have to do.

If you don't have a natural talent for it, you can read up on good rotations, gears sets, and specs on information websites.

  • KalafaxKalafax Member UncommonPosts: 601

Well most of the people who know everything are the ones that rely on forums, wikis, and other places that give you the best rotations, specs, and the such, I personally find this to be the biggest problem in MMOs these days.

But for those of us who have a natural talent, I'd go with the second poster, dedication, do every quest you come upon, make sure to completly clear an area of quest and what not before moving on to another, make sure to get skilled in being able to read all the general chat channels while you play so that you can see answers to questions people ask in chat and neatly file away all those tidbits you read. Other then that pick up everything! and sell it to vendors if you cant personally use it, if your about to run out of room go to town, sell and then continue, its all about making that bank, and be very stingy with money, buy essential pots if you need too, only wear gear you find or friends give you and if you dont kno peeps who can enhance your gear, then dont get it enhanced, this is a sure fire way to build up cash easily while everyone else is having money issues. Also never tell people how much money you have cause you will usualy have more then them and they will ask for some.

MMOs are built to be done in drops that you find, so really the only reason to have the best gear for you levels is to make it easier but its really not needed since there hasnt been a hard MMO in a long long time.

My best advice to you is don't worry about it. Just play the game the way you want and have fun. The people you are referring to are usually the ones that have researched all of the fun right out of the game. These are the same ones that treat a game like a second job and try to run everyone else's game for them with their 'advice'. Anyone who's ever been in a raiding guild knows exactly the type I'm referring too.

    earn money

pay some kid in a chinese sweat shop to grind my char

    :)

Heh nope generally just research a game a lot can be learned from the info prior to a game, get into beta if you can.

But the main thing is just research research research know what class your going to play at launch rather than spend months chopping and changing trying different thing's to usualy go back to the first one your tried anyway as it's the class you would have chose.

Know the other classes and imagine your skills v there skills and how you can beat them etc.

Just a case of planning ahead before you even enter game as much as you can.

Honestly, I really think how fast you progess in an MMO in general and how good a person is, is how much time commitment an individual puts into the game. Basically anyone can do everything in an MMO if they have the time to invest in it.

I wouldn't worry about being the best and dedicating all your time to it though, people will reach the end of playing an MMO eventually and if you didn't enjoy it then it was a waste. I learned this pretty quickly after my first MMO.

Don't worry about time investment or anything and just enjoy, some players might be 'leet' but you are the one enjoying it, they are only fooling themselves for the time being, and they will realise it when they move on to another MMO and look back and say 'wow that wasn't very fun at all'.

That's not true. There was this one adult only guild in WoW, where most of us were level 80, and we decided to start running lvl 70-80 5 mans. A few of these people just had no idea how to play their class properly or how to play in a group. So no, investing time doesn't automatically make you good, because some people just plain suck, no matter what. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's good to realise this asap, so you avoid fustrations.

There are a lot of people who have seen every game mechanic in the book and every possible angle for doing things,so it comes second nature.IMO most games do not have much for a learning curve, they are VERY simplistic in their designs. To show the comparison,MANY people claim EVE has a high learning curve,i laugh at EVE's design,it is merely a game full of spreadsheets, nothing complicated there at all. There are still people who get confused by basics like Healers=WIS....MAges=Int... KNight/Tank=Stam/def...Rogue/scout =STR or DEX or both.I guess this would be the proper use of the word "NOOB"players with really no clue what so ever.

For myself,i always had a feeling of self accomplishment,i NEVER would be one of these modern day noobs you see EVERYDAY in chat. What do i see in chat?"can you people please tell me what is the best class to play"... "I am a warrior, what is the best place to put my stats?".."What class has the best dps in this game?".."I am playing a Mage, what is the best sub class for my mage?"..."I am not sure what skills to pick, for my Knight, can someone tell me?",it goes on and on,it's like people cannot think for themselves at all. They do not want to experiment or have fun playing the game for "themselves",they want a cookie cutter player and be told EXACTLY how to play "THEIR" player.I mean c'mon this is just gaming, this is not a players first day in a new job, there is NO PRESSURE at all, making your own decisions or learning things through trial and error.

BTW..yes i need to edit every darn post,my typing sux bad :(

It's easy. First you play an MMO called 'World of Warcraft' until you become good at it.

After that you are good at every MMO released after 2004, because the combat doesn't change at all when you change games. Same combat, different game.

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

The first thing you have to do is ask yourself why you're playing the game in the first place. What are you hoping to get out of it? Whatever your aims are, technically you can have fun. Doesn't matter if you only manage a few hours here and there or are happy to pull all-nighters and likewise it doesn't matter if you're happy to just amble through the game at a nice, sedate stroll or want to burn through content to level and hit the endgame.

No matter what gaming experience you're after, the first thing to do is be honest about it. Then find others of a like mind. Really, that's about it.

But understand that it's one thing to want the great kit or the daft amount of gold or the Yoda-like knowledge of your class, but it's another entirely to put the time and effort into achieving it.

But if you want to be someone who knows that Gnargax Belt of Bollocks gives you a .02% chance to proc Anal Fireballs; go for it. Google is your friend, as are sites like Allakhazam, Thotbot etc. A world of knowledge, from how to stack quests and get the highest XP to time ratio, through to (usually differing) advice on how to match your equipment to your build. There are interface add-ons, strategy books, Excel spreadsheets and all manner of other things designed purely for you to squeeze that extra .02% out of your character.

But if you're enjoying the game and the company you keep and the time you spend in that world, then I would say you're pretty much spot on as it is.

The ruptured capillaries in your nose belie the clarity of your wisdom.

    1) Read your class forums regularly.

    2) And the forums of other classes if you get time.

    3) Talk to other, more experienced players of the same class.

    4) Join a guild with skilled, friendly players.  Doesn't have to be the top guild, but avoid ones with no goals or direction.

    5) Be dependable and reliable.  People will assume you are a good player if you're dependable, even if you don't know entirely what you are doing.  I assume reaction from other players is a motivation for getting better.

    6) Make an enemy.  Be competitive.  Having a talented adversary - friendly or otherwise - is a compelling force to get better.

    7) Never stop trying to improve yourself.

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

I am usually one of those players who play a game and know what to do before even playing it, the reason is my experience with all the mmos I played. At the end of the day, most mmos are at their core similar, so when you get one game, you get the others, there are always exceptions though.

What I do when I start a game is before I even start questing, before I start moving, I open all my windows, hover my mouse over the stats to see what they are, try to check the skill table if there is any and figure out which direction I want to go. I actually might take between 30 minutes and an hour before I even take my first step.

In terms of different specs, I am an altaholic, and I make a lot of low level toons, without spending too much time on them, just level them a little take different basic spells, skills, specs, just to see how the mechanic works, and that way I know how it's going to be later on, because most of the time, the higher lvl skills and spells are bigger versions of the lower ones with some added features.

To make money, I spend a lot of time crafting, a lot of time playing the market and am usually one of the richest people on a server. Just learn which items to craft, which items sell fast and concetrate on these items, don't need to scatter your knowledge all over the place.

These are some of the pointers I can give you now.

    Peace

i get good by beeing a social player that have the time to make pepole think that im a fun person to game with. im also kind to unknown pepole, never moans about loot and stuff and when me and my random team splits up i usually tells them to add me if they need any help. and then, after ive hit max level, i lick upwards for some "elite" memebers and bam! im in a nice elite guild as a social memember that can raid and some random stuff with the guild.

works like a charm everytime. try it out. but dont exerices my advice outside the safety screen.

I'm not really that good at MMO's, but when I am confused I look at forums and wikis to help out a little. I feel like once you get comfortable with one MMO you are pretty set for the rest of them though.

I've been playing MMORPGs for years and I'm still not so great at it, but I have fun.  Managing money is the kicker for me.  My characters somehow become compulsive shoppers and won't won't stay away from Auction Houses when they probably should.  The only advice I could give as far as money-making goes, is the advice someone once gave me:  never buy anything from an Auction House, and only go there to sell your items.  Although that can be tough to do, especially when you're in need of gear or something.

    Its all about inteligence.

How good you are at learning.

Thinking, relating information, using logic, being creative, testing everything, compreension of game mechanics.

Simple understandings of patterns, specially time, difficulty, value, demand/offer, alternatives.

In the end, those who do "good", do so, not because they spend more time, but mainly because they are superior human beings.

    Not worth getting on details.

edit. Important note: people suck so much nowadays because they were spoiled by the industry, people who came from the complex muds, pen and paper rpgs and ultima online learned by force how to survive in such environments, so they evolved a lot, people who just started got spoonfed the basics and lost the survival skills.

If there is something I need to know, I would normally check out the wiki, and see what the articles have to say. Normally, it's about skills or geer or mission walkthroughs. It amazing how much information the wiki can hold, and sometimes, they can even change my playing style, especially if I had been doing something wrong previously. Yes, there are some people who tend to look down on research, saying that they take all the fun out of a game, but sometimes, it is good to do some reasearch first before going a certain route, because for all you know, just jumping into it things and doing it wrong would be be a huge disappointment later.

I also tend to check the forums and in-game chat as well, because those are the places where people share their information, and what they've learnt in the game previously. Nothing wrong with learning from other people actually, and sometimes, their knowledge might actually make or break your gameplay.

But then again, that's just me. I hate asking people for  help (which is something that I dislike about myself actually), so that's why I tend to fall back on research and forums.

Many people MAY disagree with me on this one but i was a popular businessman in SWG (Shipwright) and i got my millions through trial and error, everyone told me to sell certain things at a set value, i disregarded this advice as i found out that most people bought the required resourses they used then prices their items on the cost of resourse + profit. Best advice i can suggest for becomign a merchant character in any game is to get the resourses/items you need to make anything yourself as it's then pretty much pure profit to you, sell cheaper than everyone else, not by much but enough to get you noticed. once you have regular customers offer them discounts for items they purchase regularly. Word of mouth will soon travel about the game and you'll get more people coming to you for things. Forget about dropping market value of items as it's my experience in MMO's that many people overcharge all the time and others follow suit thinking it's the average price.

Hope this helps out and good luck.

    min-maxing for progression and skill/stats/spells.

know your function (roll) through and through

metagaming (especially in PvP games) -- usually also involves knowing everyone else's function(roll) through and through.
