Hate to burst your bubble but a ton of games have had smooth launches lately. It is pretty much mandatory now a days in order to drive a even remotely successful mmo. Champions has an advantage as to not be launching alongside a WoW content patch or expansion, but unfortunately they have Aion to deal with. While some may think these games have nothing in common, they will basically hurt each other's subs while WoW releases Icecrown and blows away half there sub base just like they did with Conan and WAR. Hell, Conan didn't even take a fully fledged content patch to drive it into the ground, just a pre-expansion one with nothing but features already coming in the expansion. Not saying Champions even compares to Conan, but one can certainly acknowledge that every time Blizzard releases something on there crown jewel the rest of the MMOs out there take a hit.
WoW expansions/patches are not the reason those mmo's lost subs. They just were extremely hyped, but many were disappointed when they didn't get what they expected.
Not a smooth launch for a lot of us non-US players - the central LA based server means that a lot of us UK players can barely log in let alone enjoy the game due to massive rubber banding etc...What's more there are hundreds of posts about this over on Cryptics boards and whilst a lot of the posts are from Uk users, many other countries are affected too apparently. The issue has been there since start of open beta and cryptic devs response has been limited to 'we'll look into it' and 'we're making a tool to try and find out where the problem is coming from. From my tests it seems there are huge packet loss issues from servers on the east coast US (servers that are neither in my ISPs or cryptics control). Not Cryptics fault per se, but something they didn't seem to take into account (or did and decided it wouldn't be a big issue for the majority) when going with the one game world / shard model.
Awesome job calling Horkathane's BS. Everytime I see a post from him I feel like Punching him in the face. A pet peeve of mine if someone who talks smack that is based on nothing but hopes and dreams. We don't know yet how well CO is going to do. Horkathane is a dumba$$.
Anyways, that aside, I hope CO is the WoW killer. Do I personally think it will be? No. But I really like WoW, been playing since release off and on. Tried alot of other MMO's and keep coming back to it. I myself am dreaming for the day when I game can pull me away from WoW. Then I'll get that fresh, fun feeling again for an MMO. Whatever game that is, I hope its in the near future.
Grats so far on CO launch. I might actually go pick it up today to try it out on my new PC (just got it yesterday). To all who play CO and Love it, including Horkathane, Have fun.

The last truly stable launch of a AAA P2P title was LOTRO pre CO. Aion will have a smooth launch as it has already been released eslewhere and is stable, US beta, etc was mainly localization. WAR had an OK launch but was a bit buggy and AOC, well, everyone knows that story, even though it is now a great game to play. Tabula Rasa, ouch, what can anyone say about that. What other AAA launches have been very smooth lately? I cannot think of any and I am one of the happier gamers here.
CO has had a great launch, not quite as good as LOTRO but great. They did do the "nerf patch" yesterday that caused an uproar amongst many but things will balance out soon.
I honestly don't think WOW patching has anything to do with sub impacts to other games at all but would love to see if there are any real statistics on that. I DO see a major expansion release potentially having an impact but not an update or patch.
CO is also a completely different genre and style of game that I do not think will be highly impacted by what WOW does. My guess, is when that next expansion comes out people might go back but would play both. Also, Cryptic sold a lot of 6 month and lifetime subs.
I know many think that WOW is the center of the universe but I do not see anything other that the "Cataclysm" expansion having an impact on any of the new MMOs.

Sorry CO is not a WoW killer... not even close to one it's doomed to a niche community. As far as I'm concerned in order to be classified as a WoW killer a game has to compete with WoW on it's level which includes having a extremely popular IP to work with and a very well respected developer working on the game. The only MMO coming out with that type of setting is SW:TOR which I can already forsee it taking a huge number of subs away from WoW first because BioWare is making it and second because it's StarWars..
CO is the 1st mmo in History to have a smooth flawless launch! Congrats to Cryptic for another milestone! Also the game is 90% sold out around the Globe. Buh By WoW it seems there is a missle launching right at you hehe. Congrats to the Cryptic Devs! The best Dev team on the planet for a job well done!

1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

I remember crushing a Horka Thane in Tribes 1 long ago who sounded just like this guy.
I almost felt bad qowning him so badly over and over again.
Almost.

It seems Horkathanes post has a funnier relevance after the game actually launched
You wouldn't think "Horkathane" would anagram into "ironic," but it's a perfect fit.
