What did you expect? Lucas is cashing out in every way possible while they still can. Did you really think there were any limits after "zombies"? Please.
This will be aimed squarely at the under 13 crowd, very cartoonish and as simple as SOE can make it. Expect it to be cross-marketed with prizes in breakfast cereals, action figures or bubble gum with cards for in game items.
My first thoughts were... no fucking way, not a chance in hell of that happening...
But... after reading it... A Clone Wars MMO based on the Free Realms engine... It...makes sense.
Mind you, I'll never play it. Not because of any SOE/SWG hatred, but just due to general disinterest in a cartoony casual star wars clone wars MMO. Still, it sounds like a solid idea... I mean, some people do like the Clone Wars stuff. And some people do enjoy playing Free Realms... it seems natural to combine the two.
Appaarently Lucas Arts wants to monopolize the mmo market with StarWars. I love Star Wars but if I am going to play The Old Republic why would I want to come play this game ? I think both Lucas Arts and SOE need a reality check.
You are both right, and it does make sense from a business perspective. No doubt this will bring in more money for Uncle George than SWG.
As Suvroc pointed out on mmofringe.com, between this and TOR, SWG is very much a dead duck in the water.
Still, this news makes me feel gross in a 'Luke kissed his sister kind of way'. We all knew the powers that be have no limits as to how far they'll whore the IP. But this takes the cake (up there with Jar Jars Super Bombad Racing).
Sure the free realms engine might be nifty, but who are they going to get to make the actual game? Soe is so devoid of talent it isn't even funny.
Hopefully this is a hoax or lucas arts can back out once they see how much of a dud free realms is.
I pray to god this isn't what Silius was pulled of Vanguard to work on, but I can't think of anything else. I had thought maybe he was getting sent up to the Seattle office to fille the void there, but he doesn't have that much experience.
My guess is if this is true, the SOE is bidding on the license to do this just like they were trying to get the KOTOR project. Please tell me this isn't finalized.
I am unsurprised. This will make money off children that do not really understand the old Star Wars ideas that older people enjoy. These are the kids that think Jar Jar is a brilliant character. These are the people that enjoyed the Clone Wars cartoons. There are many of them, and we will have to accept that. I am quite upset by the prospect of this game, however.
"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it." Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
LIke I said elsewhere, SOE bragged up those useless Free Realms sub numbers to dangle a carrot in front of the one company that wants WoW numbers. 4 Million falls into that category despite being useless free accounts.
OK, this explains why 5 Lucas Arts folks were at Fan Faire. This might be where the former SWG Producer is going. HIs former job was making phone games. A browser based game could be simular. I will watch this with great interest.

I am at a loss for words.
They have finally lost it!
I'd like to say I'm surprised but....well it is SOE people. "We do dumb shit" is kind of their mantra.

lol. This made me laugh. Problem is, It's so true.
It's got to be a mistake surely!
Playing polished, lag free, feature complete games is carebear. Whining about a game you hate but still play is hardcore man!
of all the IPs the could choose to do a browser based mmo for kids over, they choose THIS !?!?!? :-O

Lol, nice.
The entire franchise pretty much makes me feel that way at this point.
LOL kind of expected it but I didn't expect it to be done by SOE.
More expected Cartoon Network to be involved than anyone else.
What on earth are they thinking at lucas arts?
Sure the free realms engine might be nifty, but who are they going to get to make the actual game? Soe is so devoid of talent it isn't even funny.

I don't even know what to say...
Just...wow...
Really?
Wow...
Un-**editing**-real!
say's to me that LA does'nt really give a crap about starwars if there giving SOE another go

This will make Uncle George some extra pocket change and keep SOE from suing them over TOR.
I guess if this is true, the odds of SWG getting the plug pulled on it within the next year has gone up significantly.

WTF? No subscription fee?
wtf more casual ^what 2 class 1 race oh men i give up!
And here was me thinking Free Realms would be harmless fun and lead to nothing bad.
If it's true then you reckon it'll mean SWG is safe?
Another star wars mmrogpg, WTF.
March on! - Lets Invade Pekopon
Quite the opposite I'd imagine.

Sadly, this is like watching spiders mate.
