Well said. GG, while irritating, is not spyware. You can sit all night sifting through wireshark if you want to verify that. Warden... Warden is iffier :)

I forgot to add, while I don't justify the software bugs with GG, its one good point is that it actually now bundles keylogger / password stealer detection. So... for all of you who shun antivirus, your game logins are actually getting a bit of protection.

    Exactly,

People don't even know what a real rootkit is!

Gameguard when uninstalled, it's gone. When you format your harddrive. It's REALLY gone!

A rootkit. No matter what you do. Even formatting your harddrive. You will never ever get rid of it anymore.

It was the sole reason Sony got sued back then, because their CD copy protection WAS a rootkit that seriously messed up a lot of people's hardware beyond repair!

    Gameguard is nothing like that!

Never wondered why you have all these fitting ads everytime you go to a site that have ads. Ads that for some magic reason matches up to what you often like to read about on teh internets? Or that youtube suggests videos for you to watch. ...and still you don't have GG.

GG does use "rootkit" technology. That is to say, it uses some of the same programming concepts, not that it -is- a rootkit. It -can- be removed, although to completely delete it you need to remove a couple registry entries. That is simply how it operates, and GG states that on their site. Locking out processes and scanning the entire system memory for certain code while the game is being played is the only way they've been able to cope with sophisticated bot programs that randomly change memory locations and process names. I guess cheating is a huge problem in Korea. Its works really messily, but I guess they respond to threats on a case to case basis instead of rewriting code. This has been beaten to death on Korean forums and by the Maple Story crowd.

But what OP is complaining about is spyware, not a rootkit. GG is not spyware - that certainly would get them sued.

(edit: tired, irritated and totally unable to type coherently)

Found a few people on this forum with actual knowledge about Gameguard and rootkit today.   Happy day for me.

Was getting pretty tired seeing only "blame GG" posts that are based on guesses.

By the way, pretty much anyone who plays online games, knows that GameGuard is pretty easy to crack. Although, the way I see it, at least it's an attempt. It would be nice if they could get a new piece of software that actually worked.

It's also not too hard to prevent hacking a game, being you don't mind invasive techniques. Look at Valve's VAC for example. Pretty elegent little system, not overly invasive, although it's not that subtle either. It just scans your files as you play to make sure nothing has been injected, and at the start to make sure they're normal. At the same time ignoring harmless things.

Rootkit or not, GG is a notoriously badly written and ineffective program, and some of the arguments in its favour here are either written by 10 year olds or the serioulsy hard of thinking ("if it was bad they wouldn't use it" - LOL.  Take a look at history mate).  If the OP doesn't want to install because of it then fair does to him.  Who the hell are any of you to say otherwise?

No one is saying that. The OP can do what he or she wishes.

What I cannot stand is some idiots spamming everywhere, trying to scare the shit out of people, by claiming GameGuard to be a rootkit.

    Wich is NOT the case!

You don't need to install a rootkit to do that.  Any software can contain malware. So long and short of it don't install software (of any type) unless its from a trusted source.

Whilst 'rootkit' is a red herring in the context you mention I do object to GG too.

  • neorandomneorandom Member Posts: 1,681

ive seen very few pieces of software that didnt install things to your root.  anti virus burry themselves so deep you cant ever get them fully out.

  • NoGame00NoGame00 Member UncommonPosts: 51

    i dont get it

if you dont install aion how can you play it

you cant play a game unless you install it on your computer

SOOOOO, I thought you where joking, but I see that you are serious, which is very sad, but hey, ignorance is BLISS. If you are worried about GG, then I would disconnect your comp from the net. Most comps are attacked 30+ times a night, hence the reason for a AV and firewall(hardware) to always be up. GG doesnt make your comp more or less violable.

So what you don't want people looking at all the nasty porn you search up? Or other crazy stuff since you're obviously hiding something.

Besides, GAMEGUARD IS NOT a rootkit. Honestly, are you really that paranoid to think a Company will get a system that gives you a virus/keylogger/rootkit/ whatever?

    .... I just can't.... the stupidity...

    sigh

P.s: I personally don't like gameguard, however i do like Aion... like it or not, gameguard is what Aion uses. If it does have a rootkit or w/e NCsoft will change it.

Installing GG by its very nature pretty much nulls your av so whats your point? The last sentence is simply false and untrue. I'm not saying use it or not (personally I would die before opening up my machine like that, even hacked GG is a massive security risk), but people should be aware of what they are actually installing.

How many game companies actually use GG, how many of them are Korean? Cheap pre-packaged solutions that don't actually work and have potentially bad side effects

In what way does GG nullify your Anti Virus Software?

I run Avast Home Edition and it keeps happily running when I start up any game that uses GameGuard.

Seriously, all this paranoia makes me laugh real hard.

If you are so worried about Gameguard, then I advise you to disconnect yourself from the internet and throw your computer out of the window. (first magnetising your harddrives ofcourse, to erase all sensitive data).

Because the moment you hook up on the internet you are intruded from all directions. And there is nothing stopping it.

Gameguard is a saint piece of software compaired to the Internet Browers, google, Microsoft themselves and what not.

So please. Spare me all the paranoia about GG! It's getting more and more pathetic now.

What a disingenious strawman of an argument.  If you cannot debate in an honest fashion it is obvious that you don't have much of an argument at all.

It is a fact that GG uses nefarious programming techniques to overcome all sorts of system level security procedures against recommendations of system producers, and it is a fact that lots and lots of people have had major problems with it because of this.  Sitting on the edges denying that anyone has had any problems because of your own experience is frankly juvenile and is of use to no-one, least of all yourself.  What people chose to put on their system is up to them, particularly when it an utter (and potentially dangerous) POS such as GG.   If you have had a positive experience then good for you, but please don't be so pathetic as to deny that others do have problems with the software.

Let it be said that NCSoft has a commercial interest in denying problems with GG.

I comprehend great thanks.  Not sure you do, as you seem to think that this being a "FORUM" and all allows you to tell people what to put on their system or not.
