No, this thread did failed.  Not as bad as Champion's Online did failed, but it did failed.

CO failed because of Bill Roper, the moment he became associated with the game it failed.

    Why did I grammar failed?

  • TinybinaTinybina Member Posts: 2,130

Reasons why this game failed or fails whatever your in the mood for thinking.

    1. Its pretty much a single player MMO (um what?) by that I mean that most if not everyone solos in this game rather then group.

    2. It did not include the holy trinity of MMO's Healer/Tank/Damage. I know I know I too thought that that was tired and played out, but this game changed my mind sadly. There is a reason why Developers make games with this setup, or should I say reasons. The main one being is that it makes you want to grp up to do stuff together. Which IMO is needed in a MMO!!!

    3. No group instances(lairs in this game) untill you get to level 30, for a game that has a level cap of 40 thats pretty darn SILLY!... To put that in prespective WOW (which had a level Cap of 60 when it first came out) first group instance was at lvl 12ish and off the top of my head I can think 6 alone before level 30...Group instances are needed in a MMO PERIOD. Not everyone wants to run missions/quest/grind all day long they need something to fill that XP void and group instances do that nicely.

    4. UI lag as others have said on the official forums there will be several times where you try to charge up a abliity and sometimes it will be as if you never pressed a button, or sometimes it will just fire off instead of charging...

    5. Developer overreaction, when people started to hit the level cap in the first 3 or 4 days the Devs overreacted. They decided to make the Mobs more difficult (which was a good thing) but then they decided to nerf XP. Yeah that was a brilliant idea as well, NOT!

    6. Lack of a good grouping system, just try to run a PUG in this game. Spam in the LFG channel and watch the tells flood in, oh wait they don't have a LFG channel. Add that to the fact that most people want even get a bonus XP for completing your mission and some missions that say you should get 2 or more to help you cant be freaking shared and you have a giant WHOOPS aigan made by the Development team.

    7. PVP rewards, ROFL so let me get this straight I can get a Purple level 40 ish PVP item that will add +1 Con +2 Intell and +3 EGO and all its going to cost me is 140,000 Acclaim (PVP) points.... To put that in perspective when I was level 1 about to turn level 2 I got a +4 end +3 rec +2 Con item in the freaking Tutorial....This is a true story folks for those of you that have the game go look up the PVP rewards and your nearest arena vendor....

    8. Do it all characters, Lets jump back to that Teaming thing which is why I and many others play MMO's verus playing single player games. Why would I run with a PUG that already has a hard triying to find missions that we can do so that everyone will get the bonus xp for completing the missions. When I can just freaking SOLO EVERYTHING MYSELF. Do I need a healer, Naw I can heal, Do I need a tank, naw my character is built to keep them close so that I can AOE the hell out of them anyways. What about some CC, blah I have that on lock plus I can just go dig into another powerset to grab another AOE hold or something, or I could just burn themdown anyways with my Uber damage. What about a striaght Damage class, did you need hear that I solo everything. Well except the Public quest Supervillians that hit for 5k and have 300k life. Cant solo them.....yet....

I wanted this game to work, really really wanted it to work. Hence why I choose it over that Crappy Anime game of AIon. But to tell you the truth I screwed up, Champions online should have been released on the XBOX, and they should rename it Champion Online, since the majority of the team it will be YOU and YOU alone.

    1. Its pretty much a single player MMO (um what?) by that I mean that most if not everyone solos in this game rather then group.  After reading through this whole post, you seem to parrot this point a whole helluva lot.  Lets see... Point 1 is the same as point 2, 3, 6, and 8.  Good work on parroting there.  MMO does means Massively Multiplayer Online game.  Nowhere in that statement does it mention "Forced Grouping".  All Multiplayer means is that multiple people play the same game on the same server as you.  You can interact with them either through talking, guilding, trading, or grouping (if you wish).  Forced grouping games (EQ and FFXI just to name a couple off the top of my head) are dead to pretty much everyone except the hardcore people who enjoy forced grouping... which is a small, niche group.
I'm sorry you cannot cope with the skill-based system.  Yes, everyone can have a bit of aspect from every type of the "holy trinity" that you describe.  However, there's a little thing called STATS that makes people specialized.  Yeah, lets see a character who has either Arcane Healing or Psi Healing, but has piss-poor presence stat do vs. a character who has the same healing ability but has super-statted presence.  Or, a tank who hasn't super slotted constitution being able to survive as a tank... at all.  Or a tank having no powers with crippling challenge added to them (+aggro) being able to keep aggro... at all.
The class-based system is a crutch... a crutch that people like you need to overcome before they can truly enjoy CO.
    3. No group instances(lairs in this game) untill you get to level 30, for a game that has a level cap of 40 thats pretty darn SILLY!... 4. UI lag as others have said on the official forums there will be several times where you try to charge up a abliity and sometimes it will be as if you never pressed a button, or sometimes it will just fire off instead of charging...  I have only had that happen since this las patch.  And, it's not a continual thing.  It only happens now-and-then.  So, it's probably a bug in their UI.
    5. Developer overreaction, when people started to hit the level cap in the first 3 or 4 days the Devs overreacted. They decided to make the Mobs more difficult (which was a good thing) but then they decided to nerf XP. Yeah that was a brilliant idea as well, NOT!  When did they nerf xp?  Oh, that's right... in open beta.  Not during live as you stated.  Unless you count them removing xp from the the mobs 5 levels lower than the character, which almost EVERY MMO has in some form.  Especially the ones that you are praising for the "holy trinity" aspect.  Oh, and to help you, here's the link to the patch notes that you are talking about (the ones on launch day).   www.champions-online.com/node/467736
Yes, the grouping UI needs some work.  However, it is not the end all like you are making it out to be with your sensationalist crap.
    7. PVP rewards, ROFL so let me get this straight I can get a Purple level 40 ish PVP item that will add +1 Con +2 Intell and +3 EGO and all its going to cost me is 140,000 Acclaim (PVP) points.... 8. Do it all characters, Lets jump back to that Teaming thing which is why I and many others play MMO's verus playing single player games. See my statement on MMOs in point #1.  Why would I run with a PUG that already has a hard triying to find missions that we can do so that everyone will get the bonus xp for completing the missions. When I can just freaking SOLO EVERYTHING MYSELF. Not everything is soloable. Cant solo them..... gratz... you just contradicted yourself (look at your previous highlighted argument) yet....  Yeah... what makes you think this?  I mean, Cryptic has done nothing except make this game more difficult.  I have yet to see a patch that reduces the difficulty in this game.

I wanted this game to work, really really wanted it to work. Hence why I choose it over that Crappy Anime game of AIon. But to tell you the truth I screwed up, Champions online should have been released on the XBOX, and they should rename it Champion Online  Why?  There's still more than one Champion that plays this game, since the majority of the team it will be YOU and YOU alone.  Only because you view it that way.

No MMO fails in this day and age. There are just too many players on the field to call anything a failure, but it sure as heck is not doing as well as I hoped it would. I think CO is doing poorly because it lacked a correct vision. It seems that the only vision the devs could see, ended with a dollar sign.

Instead of building on a potential paradise for comic geeks wanting a action packed MMO, they chopped up their game to turn it into a cash cow for the future:

    • Subscription rates and micro-transactions (terrible idea implemented)
    • No villains
    • Instances that hinder player interaction AKA one server on different frequencies

    • Limited PvP (a must for superheroes is supervillains)
    • No HQs (lairs, hideouts)
    • No vehicles
    • No supergroups (superteams) functions aka Avengers, Justice League, Alpha Squadron
    • No distress call type quest
    • No sidekick system (pet system that offers buffs, stat boost, limited assistance).

All these could show up eventually in CO, but for now they are only afterthoughts to what they could put in the game to charge more for in the future. This is what I mean by limiting their vision to $$$. Therefore limiting their ability to tap into a larger niche crowd.

I may be okay with a game being free, paying a sub fee and having micro-transactions involved or purchasing a game and it having MT's.
What I am NOT okay with is purchasing a game at full price, being required to pay a sub fee and then being expected to use MT's. Notice there I said expected - I know you are not forced to use them and I know you do not have too, but come on people, they wouldn't put the system in place if they didn't want you or expect you too.
And I firmly believe the type of MT's will change drastically and for the worse. Soon it will be game changers...just my opinion.
Sorry the entire time I tried the game after CO's sub plans were known, I felt nickle and dimed and it really did quell my enthusiasm for the game.
Had they chosen two ways to make money, I would have been fin; but using all 3 was a step too far for me.

Micro transactions? depends on really what they have for it. IWoW has it in race change, name change, server transfer etc If it something similar in form costume and name change i do not see it being big deal.

You have looked whats for sale in the store haven't you? Not a single item that will progress the game ahead of any other subscription paying member, nothing but Action Figures which tbh are just eye candy and for the "Pet" collectors that you find in games that have them, such as WoW.

If the Store started to sell items that gave extra powers (Which it doesn't) or entry to special instances (Which it doesn't) or access to new maps (Which it doesn't) THEN I'd be unhappy, but it doesn't offer any of those. However I know full well some of you will say "But they could offer those" well yes frankly they could, and when they do I'l probably be playing SWTOR, which as it happens is another one causing issues with small minded people.

Lets not forget the Millions of subscribers that also don't have an issue with all the Power Lvling services and Gold selling services that come with WoW aswell, the worst RMT out there.

Instead of building on a potential paradise for comic geeks wanting a action packed MMO, they chopped up their game to turn it into a cash cow for the future:

Subscription rates and micro-transactions (terrible idea implemented)  Depends on how they implement it.  If it's like CoX, then it'll be just services (char renames, new costumes, fluff items, etc...), which I'm alright with.
No villains  CoX didn't have villains at start.  And, they added them later... so it's a very high likelihood that villains will be added to this game.  And, unlike CoX, CO can just use the same skill structure but add new missions and starting area for the villains.  So, less work for CO unlike CoX had to do (new classes).
Instances that hinder player interaction AKA one server on different frequencies  Your opinion.  I find this is not much of a hinderance.

Limited PvP (a must for superheroes is supervillains)  CoX didn't start with this either.  See my answer to your "No villains".
No HQs (lairs, hideouts)  Again, CoX didn't have this at start.
No vehicles  CoX still doesn't have this.  Doesn't mean that this won't be implemented in CO in the future considering that CO has 13 travel powers while CoX effectively only has 4.  Much easier implementation into CO IMO.
No supergroups (superteams) functions aka Avengers, Justice League, Alpha Squadron It's called Champions.  And, I don't really see what this has to do with the game at all.
No distress call type quest Again, CoX didn't have this at start either.
No sidekick system (pet system that offers buffs, stat boost, limited assistance). False.  There's a sidekick down feature (allows higher levels to help lower levels).

All these could show up eventually in CO, but for now they are only afterthoughts to what they could put in the game to charge more for in the future. This is what I mean by limiting their vision to $$$. Therefore limiting their ability to tap into a larger niche crowd.
This is nothing but Cryptic hate.  There are no facts what-so-ever to validate your claim that they are "limiting their vision to $$$."  A vast majority of the points you stated above CoX didn't have them at launch either.  However, a lot of them were implemented into CoX at a later date.  And, I find that a lot of them will be easier to implement into CO than they were in CoX.

"1 more question that i need you to post the reason,, if City of heroes is still alive and its still a good game, why CO is not good when CO are the same guy who made COH/V?"

The answer is simple.  Cryptic Studios is a name.  The people behind CoX that mattered are still working for Paragon Studios.  Having played CO and CoX again just within the past few weeks.  With the exception of AE, CoX is superior.  I personally hate AE, but that is a personal issue.

I wholeheartedly disagree that "CoX is superior" to CO.  I personally hate being pigeon-holed into making a character with only the limited options that a specific class (archetype) allows.  And, yes, AE was a poorly-implemented mechanic to the game.  Which is why CoX now suffers from it.

Poor question. It starts off with a bad assumption that CO is not a good game.  COX is not superior in many ways. I played COX for a long time and have moved to CO where I am happy with the game and cannot wait for its further growth and expansion.  COX is a good game and CO is a good successor.

Are you sure your not an alt for PeterPoker???

Anyway, why such venom? If you really hate it so much why bother to post at all. There is nothing constructive coming from the dialogue. Nornally, if I am challenged by my like of a game and want to write something it will be to help myself gain an understanding of what is good that people like.

You obviously are just here to bash which serves no value or purpose.
