I agree that IP based games come with a whole set of problems and limitations you don't see with original work. However, I think a well done open-ended game based on Dune would pretty much spell the end of my life in the real world. I would have to sell off various organs and appendages in order to pay the bills because going to work would be out of the question.
This assumes the game is done "right", of course.
Edit: Despite being a huge sci-fi fan, I had never heard of Riverworld. I am buying the whole book series based on what I read over at wikipedia. It sounds absolutely fascinating. I can see how it would make a very unique MMO!
A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.
Riftwar is pretty much your classical MMORPG setting. Magic would be touchey though, players would deff have to be limited to Lesser or Greater schools and not both like Pug. Items giving power (AKA = Thomas and the dragon armor) .. its all in there. Great set of books.
Armored Core would be great, with tons of extra parts, character customization would be amazing. Literally noone would be the same since you can even tune each individual part.
Say what you want about those anime, they all basically have the foundation for a MMO, unlike most of the other ips suggested.
I also agree on armored core, but only if it was made like for answer, with the mercenary system.
Of course all of thes ewould have to be made by bioware.

Wheel of Time or Sword of Truth.
Both series just scream race/class depth and an enormous and detailed world.
Being a crazy Asha'man who just accidentally sliced a guildmate in half with a gateway... priceless.
Pokemon, yugioh, digimon, and naruto.
