Update from Smed on EQ2 beta boards:

jimothypetrojimothypetro Member Posts: 1,437

First and foremost, thanks for helping us test EQ2. We're getting great feedback and you're helping us find and fix problems at a very rapid rate.

I wanted to address a couple of concerns:

1) Login - these issues should be completely gone in the next few days. Sorry for the problems, but simply put there were problems that needed addressing.. and addressing them caused some bugs.. those will be gone quickly.

2) Lag - it's really 2 zones atm.. it's Antonica and Commonlands. The team has made great strides in this area..and they have some big stuff coming in within the next few days that we hope is really going to get things back to normal. It's gotten a lot better, but we see it too (we're all playing EQ 2 all the time). This will go away before we launch. Please also understand that we have very deliberately been running the servers at what we consider to be the maximum capacity. In the next day or so we'll add another server or two to the list that players can go to. This should help a lot since as we let in a lot of new people we won't be seeing them all go in to the existing ones. Our strategy here is a simple one - to keep the servers stressed out to make sure we address server performance issues. At launch we will have a significant number of servers, so in and of itself this should help a great deal.. but we're not relying on that. We're going to make sure the performance is good.

3) Launch - The offical announcement comes out tomorrow. While I understand that some of you may feel the game is coming out too early.. we feel very strongly that we can address the remaining issues and have a very smooth and successful launch. We have a lot of things that we're testing internally before we open them up to you all... and that does include a ton of bug fixes that are underway. The team is closing bugs out at a lightning fast rate. From the outside, when you see login issues it looks like we've taken a step backward.. and I can understand how it appears that way. But the people on this team are stone cold pros who have done this for a long time and are dedicated to making sure EQ2 is an enjoyable experience.

Thanks,

John Smedley
President, Sony Online Entertainment

Well.. that pretty much confirms the release date of Nov. 9th.

Ug, that is almost exactly what they said for SWG launch date "about being too early but we are read".  Just hope it goes better, but bad deja vu...

Tuesday is the standard MEDIA release day.

Music albums, Movies, Everything Releases on TUESDAYS Unless companies want a specific date for a promotion reason.

If your in beta, I bet your wondering the same thing I am, How are they going to pull this game together that fast??? I expect the same way they did SWG.

to be honest, the only bugs I see right now was the login server issue yesterday, but i havent ran into that today.

Also, another issue I see is how in the world are they going to fill up all those merchants with items besides bags and a torch.

Other than that, I really didn't come across any show stopping bugs like I didn in SWG beta (anyone remember the ghost mode you got in after taking the shuttle everytime? )

I haven't seen any major bugs lately either.. I can't even think of a small bug right now..I know they're there but I just can't think of any... but there isn't a whole lot.

The lag isn't too bad either.. in places EXCEPT Antonica and Commonlands.. the lag is pretty much perfect. Supposedly this wednesday they have "big" improvements.. so that should be interesting to see. :)

And I don't know if they plan on filling up merchants with things besides bags and torches.. I think they might just be there for quests and just to sell things instead of traveling back to town.

Would be ncie if there was at least food or something they were selling, though...

There is only 2 things I'm worried about..

    1) The lag in Commonlands and Antonica,

    2) How are they going to make sure all the traits, etc. that aren't even in the game yet are working.

I would also like to see some sort of maps.. but this isn't the place to complain about that. :P

I just gave up, and logged out after having my quests reset on me after I zoned. And there've been other things as well.

Good luck to em, but I'm not going to pay to beta test their game for a year.

I don't see why everyone's always so concerned about the game getting released with too much lag and too many bugs... the way i see it is, they're going to fix it anyway so why not just let us play it? we all wanted to be in beta anyway...

Because there are many many people in the beta that would rather keep playing for free.

    Its all very simple...

SOE knows that people will pay for this game right now. Whether its finished or not they know that they could take a dump in a box slap an EQ2 sticker on it and people will buy it. It is the same thing that happened with SWG. They figured they can release before their biggest competitor get the money and have people waste their "free" month fixing the game for them. Think of it as the open beta that you pay to play.

This is nothing new. Par for the course for SOE. Their philosophy "sell them a half finished improperly tested game now for 50 bucks and we can sell them the rest of it in 6 months for another 35 bucks" Also they might think about fixing some of the current problems during that first 6 months but since they already got your money......I wouldn't count on it.

Wow its amazing the depth of rather uneducated ramblings when it comes to SOE.  First of all, SOE was not the primary reason that SWG had such a crappy first day.  Although it was there programmers developing the game, everything including launch dates and the material that goes into the game is handled by Lucas Arts!  The only thing SOE is responsible for now at this point is eating all the crap people say and running the servers.

NO MMO has ever come out complete, anyone that even tries to say its just the way SOE works, has no idea about MMO's or hasn't played enough of them at Launch to know that there is always going to be stuff that doesn't work or was left out.  From what I read from alot of players in Beta, EQ2 is closer to being finished than any other game thats ever launched for an MMO.  Of course there's concerns about the game, there's concerns about every new MMO thats about to be launched.

SOE's developers have always been quick in trying to address bugs and issues or missing things in Everquest.  It may not seem like it, but then no one really realizes that its not just 1 thing that breaks.  For every 1 thing a programmer fixes or add in, atleast 100's more break because of it.  Granted alot of those issues can be quickly addressed but its alot when every patch adds in atleast 10 or more things.

When you have multiple programmers and even with the standards of coding that every one has, its bound to happen that something doesnt work right when its all integrated together.

Anyone that wants to say I dont know what Im talking about, well you dont' know how dead wrong you really are.  I went to school, I've worked on group projects for making games and let me tell you.  When you finally finish something and you're play testing it to turn it in, you always always always!! Find something wrong with it.  It doesnt make you bad or inexperienced, it just happens. Its impossible to account for everything that could go wrong.  You can only preplan for what you think will go wrong.

Im not some lil fangirl of SOE, but I've met some of their people at GDC and at school.  Every one of them are hard workers.  When you say its about money, believe me you have no idea how much money this company or any company working on a project of this size is spending.  Eventually they have to start making money back on it or it wont be a viable commodity and then like so many games we all wanted to see released, or company's we loved games from, it has to close and people lose jobs and we lose out on games we liked.

btw I would not buy *dung* in a box with EQ2's sticker on it.   Im extremely picky about what software I buy.   I started out really wanting WoW, thinking Eq2s requirements were just to much to deal with, but after stress testing WoW and reading all the things they're doing.  How they're handling suggestions and comments from their own beta testers I decided against it for now. Perhaps when the game is more balanced I'll add it to the list of games im playing at the same time.

Yeah and I believe everyone I meet on a forum......Riiighht.

You are just as likely to be a 10 year old boy so save the "I have intimate knowledge of such and such posts"

Say what you want about SOE. I say their record and reputaion among the current gaming community speaks for itself.

If anyone really gives a darn, the difference between last night and tonight was amazing for me. I even set my vidcard setting back up to max quality and tweaked the ingame settings up 2 notches. This was in the Common Lands on beta2 just a few minutes ago. I don't pretend to know what they did but they obviously tweaked something today. Any other real beta testers notice any difference? Edit and the only bug I have had so far was when my user interface just decided to quit once, I just closed the window and relogged a few min later. Log ins did suck yesterday all day, but seems fine now for whatever reason.

    I miss DAoC

Wow Starman...such an "adult" thing to say.  I dont expect anyone to believe me, even though I am telling the truth.    You speak for the "gaming" community yet, I AM part of the "gaming" community and several other people here who are enjoying their games are from the "community" and none of us flame their company.   You can hate SOE all you want but atleast be educated on the truth.  Hell the developers of SWG said those exact comments of everything in this game is approved or put in the game by Lucasarts.

Regardless...Im getting excited about the release date for EQ2 and its good to hear that the lag issues for some of the zones is starting to take place.

Thats ok because im gonna get top of the line, I like my computers to last longer then just 1 year.

For some reason i always see posts flaming EQ2 by people that are in beta? But they never quite playing the bata, Why? If you hate the game go play something else. We dont really give a crap what your opinion is on SOE. Go post that in the WoW forums.
